I think it's more because For An Angel and No More Alone are both in a D key (though FAA is in D minor and NMA in D major), but the chords and riff that emphasize D & A (characteristic of PvD's old style) are heard in both tracks.

you seem to know your stuff although d major and d minor sound totally different. All the chords are opposite and then there are open chords and inversions to account for so....... For An Angel is actually in A minor though ;)

@MissingAmongPeople They do sound different when you play chords involving the 3rd, but since the 1st and 5th are the same in both + & -, if you just play those two pitches, the key will be ambiguous (say, in the intro) until further notes like the 3rd are introduced (correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that's an open chord?). And that would be most likely why the intro was taken to sound like FAA despite being in different keys...at least that's my theory. :)

Well, I'm no genius on this matter and god knows it's hard to find the right words when discussing it at times but first of all......

an open chord is when the degrees of the chord are an octave or more apart - for example, C1, E2 and G3 would be considered an open C chord.

As for A being the first inversion of a D minor chord - yes you are correct but tht chord would be A,D,F. For An Angel Begins with A, C, E.

If I were to add the seventh to an A minor chord it would be G. G is sharp in D minor so it cannot be D minor that For An Angel is in because he has used G and not G#. That's not to say that he hasn't used an accidental............. ;)

see the way you say chords with A as the bottom key are taken to be second inversion. That's a bit loose because there are certain times (depending on different scales and different chords) that it will be the case. it's a hard subject to have a brief conversation on.

A, D and F is a D minor chord in it's first inversion (as a is the only key which has moved). If it was F, A and D it would be a D minor chord in it's second inversion.
