It's believed to have been written by Dominic Behan round 1960 but I'm sure there was a much earlier version. I heard a beautiful version last year in Kilkenny sung in Gaelic. It's a somewhat bawdy courting song of course
I dont visit enough my friend!!! Always love listening to you...I'm heading straight to your originals after this to see what gems you've been creating!! :-) 5****
Well Hi John..Wisconsin Yeah!!! LOL Had to check your channel out. Darn your singing reminds me of Gordon Lightfoot.. AWESOME.. I subbed and added you as friend, so sending 5 coke's and a friendly hug . Sherry
Thank you very much!!! :-) I'm a big Gordon Lightfoot fan, so that is a huge compliment - a stretch, but a huge compliment! Certainly nice to meet you!
Thanks so much! Ronnie Drew has (had) so much of a unique voice that I was completely drawn to this song when I first heard him sing it, and thus the Dubliners - and hence my love of Irish Traditional Music grew larger. So much so, that I do play in a small local session occasionally and have picked up the whistle and bodhran and continue to work on the banjo. Hey Music - its cool, not? Anyway, if you can find Ronnie Drew's version of Black Velvet Band, and like ITM, you owe yourself a listen!
Lol! I don't know, perhaps because most of my songs are considered "Pub Songs"? That's my story and I'm sticking to it! Thanks for the visit - glad to see ya! :-)
It is supposed to have been written by Dominic Behan, around 1960, though he got the chorus from a play by Sean O'Casey - "Red Roses For Me" (1942). O'Casey may have got it from an older song, but there doesn't seem to be any record of it.
There are various double meanings in the song. It's not as innocent as it sounds!
Raymond, Thank you so much! I know what you mean about the double meanings. That's part of what entranced me... I don't think that when she lifted her petticoat silent and slow, that she really wanted him to tie her shoe. And also, when he tied up his sleeve... the sleeve wasn't on his arm and his intent was surely to buckle something else... :o Thanks for your insight!!
