@ctmaNEWS Well you should be more thankful for the length of the war, if it didn't last as long as it did its doubtful slavery would have been abolished because of this war considering it was a political move to justify the cost in lives.
This is one hell of a song. The best part is that it has nothing to do with the politics of the battles concerned, it's about people, fighting and dying in them. It's what war eventually boils down to, they don't really have a reason, but they fight, and the fight is all that matters to them.
Hail to all the soldiers who fought in this battle! My heart is on the rebel side, but I have full respect for both sides, for the people who died. One strong nation divided in a bloody war...almost hard to belive...
I think it was the most important civil war in history.
it takes a very special and epic song to take you on a journey. it takes an EVEN MORE special and epic metal song to take you on a journey and get you close to tears like this one does. RIP all who died in the civil war, never will be forgotten
@marcusanddoom possibly.. Jon Shaffer had read hundreds of books on Gettysburg...he could've made the song much, much longer lol, but he wanted to briefly touch base on what he thought were the most important events of the three days. There's no possible way anyone can know every single detail of that battle - even if you dedicate your life to studying that battle...it was that complex.
i was lucky and saw Iced Earth in '04 in Rochester NY. they played this live and it was nearly flawless. bobby jarzombek on drums, ralph santolla on lead guitar, ripper on vocals. bass? maybe james mcdonough...can't remember.
@EJE22822 or Steve DiGiorgio? My dream team: Schaffer (guitar), DiGiorgio (bass), Santolla (lead guitar), Christy (drums), Owens & Barlow (vocals), I love them both, tough decision.
the civil war is one of the saddest wars u.s. has fought in. gettysburg is one of the saddest battles of the civil war. great songs in this trilogy and great video. iced earth did a great job.
32 minutes long beautiful music, gothic rock, flutes, incredible male vocalist, marching band drums in this tune, live music video. Just awesome, which is an understatement. How is it I didn't find these guys until 2012 & they've been around since 1988? Wow.
just a couple weeks ago i did a presentation in my U.S. History class. The topic i chose was "The Tide Of War Turns" due to we were covering the Civil War. I used the segment "High Water Mark" from this trilogy. I simply plugged in my mp3 and had the lyrics up on the powerpoint along with pictures during the extended instrumental part. two things happened: I got an A and I turned a few people on to Iced Earth.
@SasorisPuppet Thanks. If only i had bought this dvd BEFORE the project was assigned... id bring the dvd in and simply play it from there. but im happy with it anyway. Im also learning this entire trilogy on the drums
Holy crap did my comment get misunderstood. Clean vocals are VERY metal, but Stu's cleans are kind of pop-ish sounding. That is all I was saying. I mean, hes not a bad singer by any stretch of the imagination, but his cleans just don't sound very metal to me.
Unbelievable Masterpiece. Tims vocals are not to describe. A hell of a singer. And a Hell of fuckin brilliant musicians. Jon Schaffers best best best work ever.
@Darkmasterjoey Stu WOULD be good for Iced Earth if he didn't sound like that douche from Breaking Benjamin. He doesn't fit Iced Earth, as much as people would defend him. He has talent, of course, I'm not knocking that, but I'd honestly prefer the incredible range and tone of Ripper or Barlow. I don't think I'm disagreeable in that respect at least.
@Darkmasterjoey in regard to the second one....it is done. Dio's ghost just laughed, Rob Halford told the kid he's mentally broken. Ozzy just told the kid he must be riding the fuckin crazy train, and Bruce simply asked a favor of Eddie......
@Darkmasterjoey I think Stu is a lot better than Owens, he can do practically everything the Ripper can with, a better clean singing voice, and he can do death metal screams.
civil war was nothing more than pure tyranny by the government to force back southern states. Lincoln could have resolved the issue by letting them go!
Well, I bought that album about 4 years ago, didn't have an idea of what it was talking about (my english were not that good back then), but now I am honored! Hail Iced Earth from the glorious Hellas!
This is one of my favorite things ever. I love Gettysburg. I go there multiple times a year and i love learning all about it. These songs are amazing to me because it's so easy to imagine it all. It's so easy to paint the picture in your head. You can feel what the soldiers were feeling and thinking. It's just powerful.
This is incredibly epic! In the DVD the guy who wrote explains that his Great-Great was in the Iron Brigade at G-burg (he found the Hardee hat and a distinctive vest in the attic of their family farm in Indiana), and actually gives a great (and historically accurate) battlefield tour that is far better than any I've ever gotten from the rangers there (one of whom is in it).
Matt and Tim ripper are the best singers for ICED EARTH. New vocalist is sucks. No offence I'm a very big fan of this band and its my personal opinion.
@IIBloodXLustII Clean vocals aren't very metal?!? I want none of what you're smoking. One relatively recent genre of metal, perhaps, but listen to metal over the last few decades... it's all clean. Hard to hear what the singer is saying when he's gargling it out through a mouthful of chocolate milk.
@babzog Not all metal was clean over the last few decades. Death and black metal were using growls/shrieks since the 80's. And it really isn't that hard to understand (good) harsh vocals in metal once you get used to it. That having been said, anyone who says clean vocals aren't very metal is just a ignorant bigot.
@babzog That's actually the only reason why I listen to Iced Earth, because I usually can't stand the incoherent vocals of the stereotypical "Heavy Metal Voice".
The vocals are clean and crisp and I can still understand the message they're trying to provoke along with a great multitude of emotion leading the way.
Everyone who pins the civil War on slavery, I'm sorry to tell you, it was about CULTURAL DIFFERENCES. Slavery was one of many differences. This has been a public knowledge announcement.
@Captain Davoke In a nutshell, It had plenty to do with slavery as well as individual states rights. Many of the south including confederate officers owned salves, precisely why they didn't want to loose out on all the slave labor. Northerners knew slavery was wrong and Lincoln had the Balls to do something about it in a time when blacks were considered property or second class citizens at best.
@Hornsup999 actually, only about 20% of people in the South owned slaves, and then only about 3%(overall) owned more than one. Abe Lincoln's intent was to preserve the Union. Not to save slaves, that came in 1863 with the Emancipation Proclamation, about halfway through the war. Read up on history kid.
@Captain Davoke Yes we know all that, thanks for the info & advice. Only 20% huh. General Lee owned at least 200, General Braxton Bragg around 100. I just named two people who owned 300, I'm not going to go on because I know you get the point. The fact is, the south supported slavery 100%, not everyone owned a plantation or had the need for slaves. The 20% you're talking about equates to an enormous number.
@Hornsup999 It still wasn't about Slavery, the Civil War was waged with the intent of saving the union, when Lincoln signed the E.P., then slavery became important.
I believe IE picked up Tim "Ripper" Owens after Rob Halford rejoined Judas Priest. Ripper shreds these lyrics awesomely. I have this on my Ipod for workouts. I'm also a Soldier in the Army Reserves and without getting into the politics of the Civil War, I proudly serve under our current flag, even though I'm a native Southerner.
@pegislo Actually at minute 22:00 that's not Barlow. That's actually Shaffer himself. Barlow has a much deeper voice. However, If you don't believe me just to read the very detailed liner notes that comes with this CD. Shaffer mentions it's him who voices the part of Longstreet and Ripper voices Gen. Lee.
I tried to find evidence of metal bands other than Iced Earth doing this, but, I came up empty. Iced Earth therefore may or may not get credit for doing something groundbreaking in the heavy metal genre.
@merdoc81 --- Yes, for the most part it was, however, i believe that the rest of the album is a history lesson that we all need to look hard at before we jump into some of the things we do as a nation. It is also a great dedication to all service members.
@james6191coffman Yeah I agree with ya. Iced Earth is one of my favorite bands. (Melancholy is the best) I like them better than mainstream bands like Metallica. I think they're way more talented and put more feeling into their songs and their material is more meaningful rather than just caring about getting rich and famous. But that's just my opinion which don't amount to much.
@TheSteelyMan Depends........This particular heavy emphasis on the history in the lyrics, no. But bands have done something similar before. The best examples i can think of, are for example, Iron Maiden, with Aces High (Battle over Britain WWII), The Trooper (The point of view of French soldier from Napoleon's Army as the Prussians crushed them), Paschendaele (The battle in WWI, nough said), and Longest Day (D-Day, WWII). But as for teaching a history class with Heavy metal...think thats a first
@drizzt102 - The Trooper was about the Crimean war, fought between Britain and Russia in the 1850s, way after Napoleon.. You only have to watch the video to see that.
@PhilTheDrummist my bad. Never watched the video, only live versions.....whoops. I simply assumed based on lyrics, which he never actual identifies the nationality of the soldier who is getting killed by the end
@drizzt102 - :) it's based on a poem called Charge of the Light Brigade, which is about the battle of Balaclava in the Crimean War. Come to think of it, it could be about any war I suppose. If you watch the music video it's got black and white film clips of the battle, lots of Union flags around.
@PhilTheDrummist Yeah, I should watch that. But i so do prefer the live version from Rock in Rio 2001. Then again, I prefer Maiden live as a whole, so... yeah
Amazing song, fantastic footage, and some truly outstanding editing skills. This video... might possibly be the most epic upload on Youtube! All gave some, some gave all... happy Memorial Day!
@Jochteas First of all, I aint american to begin with. I'm canadian. That don't mean I don't believe that war went the way it should of, or that i'm ignorant of the bloodshed and death that happened to insure it went the way it should of. Much respect to those who died. They died to keep their country free, and they died to end slavery.
I thought Alive in Athens was their first DVD release? Epic songs though it was such a rush seeing this performed in San Fransisco all hail Iced Earth> Jon Shaffer.... no need to say anything else!
thanks for the upload! this is by far the best upload for this song. thanks so much! i recently discovered what these guys are about. its everything i stand for. thanks guys (iced earth) for breaking the norm and singing about america's history.
As a student of history and that of the War Between the States, I was quite amazed of such a melodic masterpiece..
