The inspiration is the same as 4 "The Trooper" or "The Longest Day" or any other song they did about a historical subject. Steve Harris & 2 a lesser degree Bruce Dickinson, Maiden's founder & primary songwriter is a history buff-->the dozens of historical themed songs by Maiden. One can speculate it is the same as any for him, either he read a book on the subject/saw a documentary; with that said the Native American Policy was of such great tragedy, the idea was great for the basis of a song.
The real "Indians" are, for the most part, dead and gone. All that remains are half breads and fractional denominations like myself who look nothing like their ancestors. For this reason, I have never claimed my native American heritage nor would I expect a real "Indian' to accept me as one. It really is said to see old white men setting up gambling huts on reservations in the name of American Indians. Those fuckers ran for the hills, alright.
Lots of "white" people, including English (where Maiden is from) hate and are terrified of these guys and their music. But they show more truth and conviction here than those sideline sitters, busy wringing their hands in fear of "metal". As a Native American, I co-sign and respect this cut. Rockin tuff........
I remember a version of this video that did not have the cuts to the movie in it. It was just the straight out Maiden performance, and it was perfect. Ironically, the only way to see any part of that version of the video is to watch the documentary Seven Ages of Rock's episode dealing with metal. Bruce describes how he came up with the notes for the chorus and they cut to parts of the video-- pure Maiden with no movie bits. I hope that version surfaces in its entirety on YouTube someday...
It's a great song, but I'd prefer if they were taking the side of the Native Americans who fought bravely and valiantly against the white man. Manowar's song "Spirit Horse of the Cherokee" is a much better Native American song.
The Europeans had always been selfish brutal conquerors, with periods of belief in honorable battle few and short, the native Americans had always believed in honorable battle. If they had been first to "culture", it is unlikely they would have been the brutal dishonorable conquerors the Europeans were, if conquerors at all.

The inspiration is the same as 4 "The Trooper" or "The Longest Day" or any other song they did about a historical subject. Steve Harris & 2 a lesser degree Bruce Dickinson, Maiden's founder & primary songwriter is a history buff-->the dozens of historical themed songs by Maiden. One can speculate it is the same as any for him, either he read a book on the subject/saw a documentary; with that said the Native American Policy was of such great tragedy, the idea was great for the basis of a song.

The real "Indians" are, for the most part, dead and gone. All that remains are half breads and fractional denominations like myself who look nothing like their ancestors. For this reason, I have never claimed my native American heritage nor would I expect a real "Indian' to accept me as one. I remember a version of this video that did not have the cuts to the movie in it. It was just the straight out Maiden performance, and it was perfect. Ironically, the only way to see any part of that version of the video is to watch the documentary Seven Ages of Rock's episode dealing with metal. Bruce describes how he came up with the notes for the chorus and they cut to parts of the video-- pure Maiden with no movie bits. I hope that version surfaces in its entirety on YouTube someday...

The society has to be stable, flexible but yet pressed on all sides to encorage advances. Europe was the right culture at the right time, if it had gone the other way then the Europeans would be the beaten ones by a Native American dominance.
