People who weren't there cannot possibly comprehend the hell the people trapped in the crowd surge went through. I was just 15yrs old. Supposed to be the best concert of my life, already seeing Anthrax and Priest at 14. This was supposed to be a fun day out with my cousin. Trouble was, GnR were so popular 100s of people were running down the slope to get as close as they could, including me. I was at the front under Slash, and within 30 seconds was almost at the sound stage/camera tower...
...I had elbows in my stomach and people were climbing on me to get out. I was hitting the deck quickly and couldn't take a breath to give me strength to fight myself out of it. A boy I had been sat next to on the bus in grabbed my arm. I don't even know how he was next to me out of 120,000 (later denied) people - but he was. My guardian angel sen him, cos he almost pulled my arm out of its socket dragging me out over people. Where is he today? I'd like to thank him, and so would my family...
...Sorry to write so much, but I want people that are perhaps envious to think twice. From my point of view this is one of the worse days of my life. i don't even know how I am still here. Ever since, I cannot go into crowds at all. Too close to death to even consider it. RIP the guys who didn't make it, and the people who have suffered physically and mentally since xx
the camera used for this was a panasonic m10...because i borrowed from work at the time hahahaa.thanks to websitemad (nige) for uploading..i can also remeber trying to record megadeth but it was just chaos for that so gave up...shocking how the years fly by
this is crazy to watch!! Even though the rise had already begun with gn'r this gig really shot them to a higher heights as they stole the shopw that day and were quite low down in the set list. The birth of a musical legend right here folks!
I firmly believe that this show, and the crush that resulted in deaths had a huge impact on Axl, especially since GN'R were blamed for it, despite Axl's requests for the crowd to move back. (His last words, ironically, were 'don't f*ckin' kill yourselves'.) Afterwards he went all safety mad, and to this day he still stops shows if he sees crowd violence or people getting crushed. Deep down I think he's terrified something like this will happen at a GN'R show again.
@MademoiselleChanel94 i agree, the term between a rock and a hard place spring to mind, If he let the trouble go on at shows nowaday it would either end up in a riot or people getting crushed. People turn up to gnr shows nowdays just to piss him off which will also wind the crowd up. So what does he do stop the show get some runt thrown out and get dissed for doing it or play on and run the risk of a riot or worse and then get blamed for not stopping the show?
@mrplanetgecko exactly, Axl has such a bad name. Unfortunately it will take him NOT stopping a show and someone getting hurt for people to cop on to this, and even then he'll still be blamed. The poor guy just can't win no matter what he does.
I was just there, along with 50 thousand walking across the fields due to a 10 mile long carpark of buses! Excellent gig my first outdoor and still the best! GnR excellent, helloween good, megadeth ok, dave brill, kiss not so good finished off with a million pound firework display I have yet to see equal :) goodtimes
Yep, was also there. I also remember the crush being so bad that I just lifted my feet and went with it as that's the only way I could stay upright. Then it all went fuckin scary as the crowd collapsed... someone grabbed my arm and haulded me out, others underneath me weren't so lucky. Still one of the best gigs ever though.
Yup I was there too. Its was effing mental - didn't know about the deaths until the next day when it was on the news - still the Best Donnington ever though! By a long shot.
I f*cking love GN'R <3 Rock 4EVER Rock kick, rap makes sick its only talking to beat... i love -85-90 4EVER like if u listen/play/areintrested about rock and history of those brave rock'n'roll heroes who survive on L.A., rock 4EVER! <3<3<3
I was there too, right at the front as the push really started, me and my mate popped out the side and went to get more beer cuz it was just too much down there. When we got home we found out those lads had died. This vid brings back a lot of memories and mixed emotions of that day, but what a day! :)
Awesome. I was there, right near the front. It was bedlam, but everyone was helping everyone. Someone went down in the mud near us, I noticed him when I trod on him, and me and three other guys then lifted him to security at the front.
Very sad about the deaths, but it WAS an awesome day. Helloween - OK, GnR - Fucking awesome, Megadeth - Mediocre, Dave Lee Roth - Awesome, Kiss - disappointing, Iron Maiden - Possibly one of the only bands on earth who could follow that lot. Top day out!
I will never forget that day. ! It was like a circle of people that fell just in front of me.! I had a hulk moment & was pushing people back up the hill. Sad day for 2 young guys & their families.! This was the most awaited gig for many years, just a pity that it turns out that Axl is a total dickhead...!
@spencer5078 This is all there is unfortunately, straight from the camcorder master tape, all 18 minutes of it. Someone else on here has ripped it and uploaded the songs separately, not as good quality as this, or the original I have at home... ;-)
Monsters of Rock Festival Donnington 88 never forget it, wow what a day out and yes do remember the crush bloody good job im a big guy. Only just managed to stay on my feet. I remember Axle screaming at the crowd. Cant remember Dave Lee Roth, Only realy went for Iron Maiden, the rest were a bonus.
Like many of the other people who commented, I was also there. I was a donnington veteran by this time, but when GnR hit the stage the crowd reaction was so strong, and people so tightly packed in, I was genuinely scared. I moved back for DLR, who ihad come to see, and even halfway back up the slope I was lifted off my feet every time the crowd surged. We went back to the car before IM came on and slept straight through to morning.
Remember that day - thanks for uploading this - never knew it existed.
I remember walking away after maiden thinking i had just seen the greatest rock festival ever - then the police came on the tannoy and told us all 2 people had died.
Brought us right back down to earth, and it was a nervous wait at the car till our missing friend finally arrived. He had "fortunately" broken his ribs during helloween.
I was there aged 17...I had underestimated the British summer weather and was freezing my ass off. I decided straight after Helloween to go buy a band t-shirt to help keep warmer. The queues at the merch stand were so big I didn't make it back infront of the stage in time for GnR. In retrospect those queues might have been a life saver!....RIP those two guys
i was there i slipped aspo anf fel it was hoffic n still remeber the after nmat i ende up with broken arm wsas afukl onkly strted going to cinert gain recnet it wil stay in my mind forwever
i wad there to i was also swlipeed ans wa hurt it was awful but im glad to see this as it does breing some sort of closer even after 20 yers it was night mare
I remember the day well, GnR refusing to play until everyone moved back, the arse hole Dave Lee Roth refusing to stop as people were crushed to death and a security guard on stage on his knees begging for Roth to stop.. a great day but the loss of life obviously put a dark cloud over the day and the bull shit bad press afterwards saying the ambulances were being attacked.. GnR have gone on record as saying they wished they hadn't played that day.... thanks to the uploader.. much appreciated.
@666InOdinsCourt666 No, Dave Lee Roth was playing that day too, Axl was screaming for everyone to move back when GnR were playing but when Roth was playing he wouldnt have none of it, a security guard got on the stage and dropped to his knees begging Roth to stop
@mancsteveuk Roth's bodyguards actually through the head of security off the stage when he went on to ask Roth to stop playing. DLR is a cock, always has been, always will be.
This was my first donnington and have to say it was the most mental one i went to the crowd surge when these guys hit the stage was just completly insane .remember getting home a couple of days later battered and bruised but knowing i had seen something special
I read that a section of the crowd actually collapsed and that there was a big pileup of people, and the two guys who died got trapped under the pile. it was a report by the head of security here. axl even says at the start "we got a pile up down there"
Bedlam? wow - the word fits as much as any. Thank you so much for uploading this, it brings a final close to the last "real" GnR set I watched - got most of the memory gone by seeing the remade band this year, but I needed this. Thanks again. Still, this one year aside, Donnington will always be one of the greatest weekends ever - just so long as you remembered never to drink anything that was passed to you in a bottle....
Still wary of heavy crowd situations to this day... that feeling of moving along, even though my feet were barely in contact with the ground, hoping that i wasnt going to slide under everybodys' feet. This vid takes me back!
yeah was there went from 10 rows back to first row everyone had gnr t shirts on, wanted to see them so did everyone wot a festival megadeth were amazing as wos david lee roth now 38 keep kickin it kids
I was there too. 15 years old! Amazing gig but the crush during this bit was pretty scary. moving metres in a second and hopping just to not get stuck and dragged under. RIP the two guys. that was a real dampner at the end of an incredible day. Maiden were brilliant.
@4521kjyut When the first band played, the crowd started doing pogo dancing and throwing thousands of cans, bottles and other shits up in the air. You'd get hit every 30 seconds on the head by something.
When GnR took the stage, everybody went nuts, people jumping all over, pushing and stuff. It was muddy and slippery. Two guys slid in front of the stage and died there, crushed.
You were just hoping not to get hit and not to go down. Scariest concert of my life.
so was i, 2 from the front............. didnt find out people died until we were on the way home...... its still a strange feeling, to this day, that people died very close to me and i didnt know a thing about it...
I was there mate and I am shocked you could film it, as it was bedlam, but awesome! I would like to point out that as regards the 2 poor boys who died and the so called stoning of ambulence men. As far as I saw that was pish! We seen 2 ambulence men and their stretcher being passed over the crowds heads to the front, and despite the crush everyone was trying to look out for any one who was slipping or in distress.
The last part of your comment tells me that you were there...I ended up on the deck face down at one point and some kind souls helped me back up...very scary stuff! That was during Dave Lee Roth, all he could say (when a stage hand ran on to tell him of crowd problems) was 'Get the F**k Off My Stage!'...much as I love the guy, he was a bit of an arse that day...
I know what you mean, he was pretty funny with his banter right enough. I remember during GnR it was so bad that someone slipped and everyone tried to help, I grabbed a leg to pull him up and this guy beside me said" thats my leg youve got!", it was a funy episode in a quite scary moment
I've being going to gigs, festivals etc for a lot of years and I have never seen any naughty missiles thrown ever. Not at a rock/punk gig, I agree, everyone looks out for each other.
@iceonaboy I was there too. I didn't actually witness the incident going down as I was too far away (about middle) but heard about the deaths when I got on the bus after the gig. I was already a huge GnR fan at this point as I had the album and had already played it to death, so their set was the one I looked forward to the most. Shame it was marred by the 2 deaths. The most Dangerous Band in the World?
Dispite Axl stopping the show numerous times to warn the crowd to step back, The crowd didn't abide and two fans were crushed during thier set. The bands manager took them to a bar later that evening and informed the band about this, Duff was crying I renember. When this got out to the media, It earn't them the name,'The worlds most dangerous band.'
yes, and after this they shut down monsters of rock for 2 years, and then scaled back the capacity, which they never even had before. something 110,000 people here, and they capped it at 70,000 after this.
By the looks of the angel of this I must not been far from where this was taken did you happen to see a 5 Gal water bottle I lost mine when GnR was on lol, me and some others use it to stand on heh.
my dad took me to see GNR at milton keynes a few years later when i was 16. we didnt make propper arrangements to meet anywhere after but somehow I saw him at the end amongst 60,000 people and got my lift home. rip (chris) my dad too!
i was there!! my dad took me when i was 10 years old.......it took us till 7am the next morning to get home and my mam had'n slept a wink cos it was on the news about 2 people getting killed....and we didn know about it till we got home!!...anyway all the bands on that day influenced my life till this day!! now im 30 and will never forget how to appreciate music of the past, present and future?!...haha well some of it is proper wank but hey...what can you do!!!
guns n roses is not just a band, but a path, ladies and gentlemen. a path. we can learn from them, what can be gained, from pulling your true worth from inside yourself. not in music, but in anything. they were special, yes, but special because of desire more than anything else. if everybody strove for excellence on an external level, as each and everyone of them did internally as an individual, then this world would get better, and fast. you make and effort, it comes back out, remember that.
love your belief man. I plan to make a classic-rock revival band because too many bands these days cite G'N'R as an influence, but I want to know the bands that influenced G'N'R themselves.
mate, considering the chaos you did well to stay on yer feet let alone record it,well done mate,i was just a little too young to go here, thanks for the post bro, nice one!I did get to see then at milton keynes!wicked bro!
Hey, they did it just because they wanted to see the mighty GNR. GNR is so NOT at fault just because some crazy fans wanted to get a closer view of them.
"It started to rain after Guns' set, so the fans on the upper hillside thinned out a bit, giving the people down front room to breathe. That's when someone noticed a hand sticking out of the mud, about twenty feet from the stage, where the hole in the crowd had been. A shout went up, and people began frantically digging in the muck.A body was pulled out, and then, sickeningly, another. Both were sqashed from being stomped repeatedly by the jumping crowd"
20 years ago next wednesday..unbelievable. went with Tommy Tighe from dublin with 4 of my mates... ! of the gang has passed away since... jesus they were the good days. Remember it like yesterday
We got there late because there was a big traffic jam on the moterway,i think we completely missed Helloween who were on first and we were just getting drinks in when GAR came on,never heard about the death till the next day.
we bailed out of the car and walked across country following our ears. We bought tickets at the gate while Helloween were playing. We got in for GnR but were further back.
Megadeth had a terrible sound but still rocked. DLR and Kiss were dicey but Maiden were fantastic that day.
I was only 15 and me and my mate perfectly fitted the discription of the two crushed kids on the news. Pre-mobile phone so no way of calling home, although we also didn't know about the deaths till we got home.
I was caught up in the crush - it was bloody scary, and I had no idea what had happened until the next morning when my mum told me. No wonder she'd sounded so worried when I'd called her from the services on the way home.
I almost feel bad saying how much I enjoyed their set after what happened, but they were fucking brilliant. In fact, the whole day was fantastic. RIP, guys.
I was there too and knew nothing about the deaths til i got home on the Sunday morning....my parents had seen it on the news the night before and were worried sick.
my dad went to this the year before i was born dam i wish guns and roses were still back around.
Im 15 and its crap going to school and people listening to shit like bullet for my valetine and screamo emo bands bring me the horizon n shit we need stuff like this to come back velvet revolver came close but thats not happening anymore.
Im glad rage are back together there a good band but I just hope true rock music comes back soon.
I was there towards the back. I felt for the poor kids that died but my wife was worried as she had heard on that afternoon n TV but was before mobiles and we never knew i the arena until after the show
We heard nothing about the two kids getting crushed, we stepped off the bus back in Aberdeen on the Sunday and all our folks were there panicking, we're like... "Er wtf you on about??!"
Yeah my mother was so relieved to see me when I got home on the Sunday. There were no mobiles back then and she had seen it on the news and was worried sick. Bless her
I was there too, remember taking a dislike to the welsh flag. Probably a Manic underneath it looking back. 1.30 in the afternoon as I recall, biggest band in the world status was just being taken. I shat myself and lost my 15 yr old brother for the rest of the festival as he'd never sen anything like it. God bless you cameraman.
Gives me goosebumps watching this .. I was 16 then .. I was near the front and it was frightening ... anyone remember Axel shouting " get the f**k back " but you couldnt move .. learned later 2 people had died .. very sad
It was absolutely manic- i remember being near the back a thinking G n R were just another Glam rock band (only really having seen posters with axl made up like a tranny!!)How wrong i was- what a great rock band they became. What a great musical day apart from that dozy Tw%t Dave Lee Roth. Helloween, Megadeth, GnR, Kiss and Maiden were superb. Sad day from a fans point of view with the sad deaths. R.I.P
It is shocking to know that 2 people, proly very young, lost their lifes right there! I mean i saw velvet revolver at rockwave festival in athens 2005 it was kinda scary being in the center of the furious crowd when they were playing its so easy! imagine dying there! god...!
i was 17 and at this gig. if anyone wants/needs to talk about it then im jezz davis on facebook.peace.

I was there too. 15 years old! Amazing gig but the crush during this bit was pretty scary. moving metres in a second and hopping just to not get stuck and dragged under. RIP the two guys. that was a real dampner at the end of an incredible day. Maiden were brilliant.

I was there in 88.
The crush was unbelievable. Too many people in too small a place.

4521kjyut 2 years ago
@4521kjyut When the first band played, the crowd started doing pogo dancing and throwing thousands of cans, bottles and other shits up in the air. You'd get hit every 30 seconds on the head by something.
When GnR took the stage, everybody went nuts, people jumping all over, pushing and stuff. It was muddy and slippery. Two guys slid in front of the stage and died there, crushed.
You were just hoping not to get hit and not to go down. Scariest concert of my life.
cbor1 2 years ago 2
Ohhhhhhh. R.I.P. 2 those guys.

LOL, yes, Adler is up there on drums, but that is a woman with the blue jean jacket on up front. She is probably sitting on someone's shoulders.

Yes 2 people died during their set at this show, very sad indeed.
AnthonydWalsh 2 years ago
this was a fkn amazing Dono...the sad part is that a couple of people were crushed to death at this particular Donington..crowd was 120k if i recall.
This is the ONLY Guns n Roses line up, and at this gig they were riding the crest of the wave. Gr8 moment in time, and i was there!!
funkyrimpler 2 years ago 2
so was i, 2 from the front............. didnt find out people died until we were on the way home...... its still a strange feeling, to this day, that people died very close to me and i didnt know a thing about it...

That gig is my most exciting memory of my teens. We were blown away by the original and best line up of the best rock n roll band of all time!
iceonaboy 2 years ago
I was there mate and I am shocked you could film it, as it was bedlam, but awesome! I would like to point out that as regards the 2 poor boys who died and the so called stoning of ambulence men. As far as I saw that was pish! We seen 2 ambulence men and their stretcher being passed over the crowds heads to the front, and despite the crush everyone was trying to look out for any one who was slipping or in distress.
iceonaboy 2 years ago 3
The last part of your comment tells me that you were there...I ended up on the deck face down at one point and some kind souls helped me back up...very scary stuff! That was during Dave Lee Roth, all he could say (when a stage hand ran on to tell him of crowd problems) was 'Get the F**k Off My Stage!'...much as I love the guy, he was a bit of an arse that day...
websitemad 2 years ago 4
I know what you mean, he was pretty funny with his banter right enough. I remember during GnR it was so bad that someone slipped and everyone tried to help, I grabbed a leg to pull him up and this guy beside me said" thats my leg youve got!", it was a funy episode in a quite scary moment
iceonaboy 2 years ago
@websitemad
Mate i remember that...that has really jogged a memory...and the weather was shit...

I've being going to gigs, festivals etc for a lot of years and I have never seen any naughty missiles thrown ever. Not at a rock/punk gig, I agree, everyone looks out for each other.
TheGobshite75 2 years ago
@iceonaboy I was there too. I didn't actually witness the incident going down as I was too far away (about middle) but heard about the deaths when I got on the bus after the gig. I was already a huge GnR fan at this point as I had the album and had already played it to death, so their set was the one I looked forward to the most. Shame it was marred by the 2 deaths. The most Dangerous Band in the World?

WINFIELD120 2 years ago
Dispite Axl stopping the show numerous times to warn the crowd to step back, The crowd didn't abide and two fans were crushed during thier set. The bands manager took them to a bar later that evening and informed the band about this, Duff was crying I renember. When this got out to the media, It earn't them the name,'The worlds most dangerous band.'

yes, and after this they shut down monsters of rock for 2 years, and then scaled back the capacity, which they never even had before. something 110,000 people here, and they capped it at 70,000 after this.
and it was during gnr that they died, wasnt it?

guns n roses is not just a band, but a path, ladies and gentlemen. a path. we can learn from them, what can be gained, from pulling your true worth from inside yourself. not in music, but in anything. they were special, yes, but special because of desire more than anything else. if everybody strove for excellence on an external level, as each and everyone of them did internally as an individual, then this world would get better, and fast. you make and effort, it comes back out, remember that.
mikese93 3 years ago 4
love your belief man. I plan to make a classic-rock revival band because too many bands these days cite G'N'R as an influence, but I want to know the bands that influenced G'N'R themselves.

We got there late because there was a big traffic jam on the moterway,i think we completely missed Helloween who were on first and we were just getting drinks in when GAR came on,never heard about the death till the next day.
tittetybumpety 3 years ago
we bailed out of the car and walked across country following our ears.
AdamM667 3 years ago
I was caught up in the crush - it was bloody scary, and I had no idea what had happened until the next morning when my mum told me. No wonder she'd sounded so worried when I'd called her from the services on the way home.
I almost feel bad saying how much I enjoyed their set after what happened, but they were fucking brilliant. In fact, the whole day was fantastic. RIP, guys.

It was absolutely manic- i remember being near the back a thinking G n R were just another Glam rock band (only really having seen posters with axl made up like a tranny!!)How wrong i was- what a great rock band they became.
