VFAT has become over populated with idiots and half ass demonstration teams with young ignorant pilots, a few years back is when the only teams performing at VFAT were professional virtual flight teams, there are only a few really good virtual flight teams and in my opinion the VBA and the thunderbirds are some of the most realistic flight teams ever created now a days you got punk kids using VBA skins and calling themselves the virtual blues but have no idea what center line is =)
Patrouille Suisse Virtuelle flies exactly as close or loose as the real Patrouille Suisse.
Next to that, what is painful about not flying as close as possible? It is actually easier to fly very close than flying loose on certain maneuvers, like barrel rolls. What counts is keeping a constant distance and stability in the formation.
I can speak for VBA in saying that close isn't everything. It's about being precise in the position you are flying. There are many times when flying closer is easier, as many aerodynamic physics factors are applied to a greater arm distance.
