Oskar already had invited Eli when she knocked at the window of his bedroom and then slept in his bed, so there would be no reason to invite her in again (at least this is how it worked in the mother and father of all vampire stories, Bram Stoker's Dracula). Also, an invitation made with a finger should be as valid as a spoken word.
I think it was just soemthing different. The tradition is that vampires can't enter univited, but no one ever explains why. Having a terrible reaction is a bit more interesting than bouncing off an invisible wall.
A really good movie and one of the best vampire movies ever made and even improves in some parts of the book... To me I'd put Let The Right One In as my 3rd best vampire book. 1. Dracula 2. Carmella 3. Let The Right One In... The rest are a distant 4th and beyond...
i havn't read the novel... so can someone please explain clearly what just happened... my theory is vampires are not allowed inside peoples homes without being invited... hence the bleeding and stuff... am i correct?
Eli wasnt pretending to be a girl, and that much was stated at least once flat-out in the film - by Eli With that in mind, I dont think Eli identifies with either sex strongly, but, the only point being made is that Eli was born male. Not that Eli identifies with the sexual role of the average male. To be honest, Im not sure it would make sense for a castrated 12 year old to do so. His sexuality was simply never fully realized.
As to why Eli was castrated Im simply not sure. All I know is that it was part of the process once chosen to be a child companion. (Wrongly chosen might I add. I will also add that Im rather pleased that the scene wasnt in the film, it was hard enough to read; quite brutal.)
In the book by Lindqvist, from which the movie is taken, Eli shows Oscar his life through a kiss. He was a boy, back in time, and he was chosen by a noble man/vampire. It doesn't explain why he was castrated in the, thought the scene is described very well....I think he had to be a child mate for the vampire, because the pedophils are always present in the book.
Well the book also says that few grown up vampires last for very long. Either they give up their humanity, becoming emotionless sadistic-monsters, or they commit suicide, or they become trapped in child bodies and remains a kid for along time. I bet the noble man was one of those that became nuts.^^*
To my understanding Eli was chosen to have his blood drunk from the vampire/noble man, only this guy was sick and liked to drink the blood from the crotch, and that was why he castrated Eli. So he could drink from there. D:
I really like this scene. Both of their minds are really fucked up, yet at the beginning of this scene, they are pretending/trying to be normal kids. She obviously has taken a shower and cleaned her clothes, he pretends like he usually receives friends and asks her to just come in. But they aren't normal, she can't come in without being invited and has to suffer, and he can't enjoy this moment, being a normal kid that invites a friend. Makes me feel so sad for the characters in some way...
STFU! Its a castrated male, read the damn book. Even if the movie is "only" based on the book, the director dubbed her voice due to the fact Eli is a dude.
Exactly, Eli was born male... I think it's just hard for people to accept characters 'they like' as being damaged to some extent. I.E., Eli has a rather pitiful past that you just want to erase.
Eli is a castrated male, and hat fact wasn't overlooked. Quote from the director: "Lina's voice is beautiful, but I thought it was too high in pitch because Eli is supposed to be a boy, a castrated boy."

It does not seem to be about sexuality in this movie. Maybe a longing for the purity of youth, and kindness that's what draws the girl to the boy. If you are saying castrated boy because of that scene with the scar, I respectfully disagree. I take that as a symbol that she is essentially broken, and probably cannot reproduce. Does this scene symbolize the beginning of menstruation?
Finally got out to see this at the Angelika in the West Village, NY. A love story between two 12-year-olds, the girl being a vampire and 12 years old for a very long time!
The movie was compelling, especially in the scenes with the girl and Oskar, the boy, and it was visually stunning. Metaphors for vampires as symbolizing aspects of culture are renewed aplenty here. Bullying is emphasized in this movie.
Effective, if spare, thrills. You won't want to miss a sec! Maybe a great film . . .
This movie was amazing. I got to see it last night, it was only playing at the campus theater.
I really love how they kept to some old legend on vampires, with the "inviting in" and so forth. That legend has never really been touched on in other vampire movies.
I love that part in the movie, it's awsome they keep the legend about having to invite vampires in. Some vampires hit a barrier or something but this was way cooler X3 5/5
As one reviewer noted, Oskar is being a bit of a dick here, after having taken Eli's advice and "hit back" against the bullies. Here, Eli calls his little bluff and at the same time performs, strangely enough, the humanizing scene in the film. Also, the scene takes on the large role of contributing to vampire lore in a way I think is amazing.
If he hadn't just done that "click click click" finger combo thing twice, it would look a bit better for him, wouldn't it? I'm not saying it's terrible, it's just a bit snotty. You know, they sort of fight in the book, physically? But carefully avoid huring each other? They are kids, they do this kind of stuff.
stop comparing this great movie to the faggotry that is twilight

This is doubtlessly one of the best movies ever made about vampires, worthy to go among the great classics as Murnau's and Herzog's Nosferatu.
Still, why did Eli started to bleed when she came in uninvited? I know that this is part of the vampire tradition, but why this extreme reaction?

In my opinion. The ultimate messeage of this movie is "What is the real relationship"
Many people just discuss the love of eli and oskar but I think it's not the point.
Understand others without any preoccupaion,
Understand life style of others
and get near to them through it.
fenixssanai27 3 years ago
Well surely in real world, sucking blood of others without permission can't be accepted
But You know what. even if we say "Human didn't kill others for survival like animals", Actually We did.
We hate, harm, kill each other for so ridiculus reasons.
All human kill others dozens of time at least in one's mind or in one's brain.
But Eli have to kill others just for survival. she's so pitiful.
If you watch this film hard, maybe you remember eli killed a old man and cried.

Nah he's just curious. He has no idea what will happen to her. It's also a way for Eli to show her vulnerability.
In the book the next day he feels bad because she is weakened by this when she needs to be strong.
