To reiterate what some other wise people have said: this song transcends The Shins. They chipped away the extra stone, to reveal the statue that already existed. Truly beautiful, like a violet rose.
Awesome band.... even in the US there's still lots of talented bands,... still don't know though, why so many crappy music is played on the radio stations, when there's plenty of OUTSTANDING material
@rabbitwho nothing can top this song. this is the first Shins song i've heard, and i'm scared to listen to any others of their songs now because this is such a flawless song. i don't want to ruin my perception of them ha, doubtful any other songs of their could be better..
everytime i listen to this song i remember the times we played it in the guitar i love you so much brother, the one things i have now are the memories we had, i love you so much, 05.02.2010 :(
I heard this song transcended the Shins once. I think whoever said that was right... It's such a nostalgic song; all dust-covered and sepia toned. The shins unearthed a diamond and polished it until it shined! It's truly amazing...
Guys, I'm pretty sure this is just about a dude who lost his girl a while back, and comes back to the town where she lives. He is still alone, but she has a happy family, hence "I'm lookin' in... on the good life i might be doomed never to find," also why he keeps wishing that she could have "took to him like a gull takes to the wind." It seems to match the lyrics, in any case.
I agree dude i have listened to this tune over and over and i havent done that in years not since the nirvana unplugged album. It is relaxing and clever great bassline, mellow lyrics and just a really good tune.
This song is beyond the shins. I love them, but it might as well be a different band.. not a band. this song came up from the universe, i knew it before i ever heard it.
I listen to it whenever I loose anyone but also when I'm happy.
I sang it to myself in the hospital when I thought I was going to die and I felt calm and happy though terribly sad.
@rabbitwho ya this is the only song i can listen to everyday and night, happy or sad. this song just melt into your heart when you listen to it. i just wanna sit by a campfire at night with a guitar singing this song and look at the stars above.
my god. Wikipedia classified one of the genres the shins does as emo. Can someone please tell me what shins song can be associated with that crappy genre for retards?
I can honestly say that the Shins' music has changed my life. Not just this one but all of James Mercer's songs are brilliant in such a way that I can't even put into words. I couldn't imagine my life without this music!

@ShaneKarma376 Whoa dude, relax. Word to the wise, resorting to ad hominem attacks doesn't win an argument. Do you normally stalk a fellow YouTube user's page when they disagree with you or have a conflicting opinion? Your user name is Shane KARMA. Don't need to reiterate what KARMA is. If you don't have anything nice to say...
My dad used to have this song on his little road trip playlist so this just makes me think of the American country side and highways, which I have a very close attachment to. the shins are one of those rare bands that touch people. its not exactly something that can be defined because it's different for everyone, and i know i probably sound like a new age hippy trying to be profound, but i really think this kind of music, that's really more art than anything else, can change people
I see Psychocandy by The Jesus and Mary Chain, Double Nickels on the Dime by The Minutemen, and Spiderland by Slint. Reply if you see any that I didn't see. :) Such a great song.

"Slang" refers to words that are used in casual conversation but are not part of the formal language. Example: Officially, "cool" means "low temperature," but in slang usage it means "good" or "desirable."

the whole thing's homages to the shins influences. theres husker du's zen arcade and new day rising, slint's spiderland and minutemen's double nickels on the dime, just to name the few the few that i can spot right now
