  • What the hell is this? Get a job Hippie!

  • how cud ya not love this shit? an absolute classic

  • Beautiful and sublime

  • Beautiful and sublime...

  • lol, people have disliked this song

    i shouldn't laugh, they're probably mentally disturbed

  • This is so unbelievably good! I heard it on Pandora and fell in love. I'm addicted.

  • It's absolutely EERIE how good this song is!!

  • Excellent song... One of the best and I love the visual tribute to the Minutemen album cover to Double Nickels On The Dime.

  • @n990 I never caught that before. Nice.

  • bliss, all i can say

  • My main music Ilike is blues and rock-but I love this song-the guitar is great, better the GIT type guitar playing.

  • how gay

  • Garden state and of course Scrubs!!! =)

  • @dice627 i just watched garden state last night. its one of my favorite indie films now :3

  • I've listened to this song, played this song on my guitar, and had my kids sing it to me.

I still am not sick of it, it's hauntingly beautiful.

  • @rrtodd95 hauntingly beautiful- exactly

  • To reiterate what some other wise people have said: this song transcends The Shins. They chipped away the extra stone, to reveal the statue that already existed. Truly beautiful, like a violet rose.

  • ok then you got the last word itsasunday.

    Have a good day sir!

  • LOVE IT,

    finally some real music

  • Garden State :)

  • thumbs down for thumbs down clicker on this video

  • Awesome band.... even in the US there's still lots of talented bands,... still don't know though, why so many crappy music is played on the radio stations, when there's plenty of OUTSTANDING material

  • This is one of the Shins' weaker songs, actually.

  • @savinobratton , Depends on your taste, maybe you are the one with the wrong ears... just take a look @ the numbers.

  • @savinobratton

    hahaha

    you hipster you ;)

  • This song makes me cry because it's so good.

  • the lyrics carry themselves so well here. the singer doesn't have to hit high notes or shout this song to leave an impact on you.

  • @rabbitwho nothing can top this song. this is the first Shins song i've heard, and i'm scared to listen to any others of their songs now because this is such a flawless song. i don't want to ruin my perception of them ha, doubtful any other songs of their could be better..

  • I totally agree someone who said this song makes us remember things which we lost.

Well, please someone tell me the meaning of lyric.

Lyrics of this song is so difficult to understand for non-native speaker like me.

  • @norimnorib The lyrics are pretty much nonsensical.

  • Superb.

  • it's times like this, when im pleasantly high, listening to this masterful creation that i really love this world.

  • This is so beautiful, I love them so much!

  • my favourite song of them is this but my absoulutly favourite song of them is sea legs xD

  • everytime i listen to this song i remember the times we played it in the guitar i love you so much brother, the one things i have now are the memories we had, i love you so much, 05.02.2010 :(

  • @goreherza i think you mean on the guitar unless you lived in a massive guitar but i dont think thats likley

  • I heard this song transcended the Shins once. I think whoever said that was right... It's such a nostalgic song; all dust-covered and sepia toned. The shins unearthed a diamond and polished it until it shined! It's truly amazing...

  • i love this song its awesome ...even though im younger i still like the shins ...

  • Perfect winter song.

  • @CaeserOct i agree

  • it's that good

  • The Shins are awesome :)

If you like the Shins, be sure to listen to Broken Bells too. Both bands have the same singer.

  • Cette chanson est magique, elle a changé ma vie .

Je ne m'en lasse pas, et j'espère voir les Shins en concert pour l'entendre en live :-)

  • Guys, I'm pretty sure this is just about a dude who lost his girl a while back, and comes back to the town where she lives. He is still alone, but she has a happy family, hence "I'm lookin' in... on the good life i might be doomed never to find," also why he keeps wishing that she could have "took to him like a gull takes to the wind." It seems to match the lyrics, in any case.

  • Check out my videos

  • I agree dude i have listened to this tune over and over and i havent done that in years not since the nirvana unplugged album. It is relaxing and clever great bassline, mellow lyrics and just a really good tune.

  • EWW LOW QUALITY

  • This song is beyond the shins. I love them, but it might as well be a different band.. not a band. this song came up from the universe, i knew it before i ever heard it.

I listen to it whenever I loose anyone but also when I'm happy.

I sang it to myself in the hospital when I thought I was going to die and I felt calm and happy though terribly sad.

  • @rabbitwho I feel sorry for you.

  • @rabbitwho ya this is the only song i can listen to everyday and night, happy or sad. this song just melt into your heart when you listen to it. i just wanna sit by a campfire at night with a guitar singing this song and look at the stars above.

  • @rabbitwho What a beautiful thing to write about music. Glad you lived to utter these words.

  • @rabbitwho so true. the first time i heard it i just thought "What a song for life".

  • It kind of brings out the nostalgic feeling of me, and in a really weird, but positive way.

  • my god. Wikipedia classified one of the genres the shins does as emo. Can someone please tell me what shins song can be associated with that crappy genre for retards?

  • 'New Slang' has the capability to evoke your most nostalgic memories and wistful thoughts/dreams...

  • I can honestly say that the Shins' music has changed my life. Not just this one but all of James Mercer's songs are brilliant in such a way that I can't even put into words. I couldn't imagine my life without this music!

  • @ShaneKarma376 ...... Overrated? You clearly are fucking stupid if you say some dumb shit comment like that!

  • @ShaneKarma376 What's your problem x D

  • @ShaneKarma376

    You got issues.

  • @TFrenchy agreed.

  • @ShaneKarma376 Whoa dude, relax. Word to the wise, resorting to ad hominem attacks doesn't win an argument. Do you normally stalk a fellow YouTube user's page when they disagree with you or have a conflicting opinion? Sorry that this music isn't pre-recorded, oversampled beats with some dude reading a really fast poem over it. These people actually use instruments! Wow! Think about it. Your user name is Shane KARMA. Don't need to reiterate what KARMA is. If you don't have anything nice to say...

  • @ShaneKarma376

    classic example of a douchebag

terrible comebacks and scared of any difference in opinion its sad

  • One of those "I just heard my new favorite song" moments.

  • My dad used to have this song on his little road trip playlist so this just makes me think of the American country side and highways, which I have a very close attachment to. It might just be from driving down to visit Houston fairly frequently. I just picture myself in the car with my family gazing out the window every time I hear this.

  • this song is so goddamn nostalgic

  • This song just has an effect on me. Not depression, not really overwhelming happiness, just a calm that puts me in a zen sorta peace. <--me too :D

  • the shins are one of those rare bands that touch people. its not exactly something that can be defined because it's different for everyone, and i know i probably sound like a new age hippy trying to be profound, but i really think this kind of music, that's really more art than anything else, can change people

  • when you are angry, sad or excited just listen to this song and you you will calm down

  • this song has quite a strumming pattern.. O_o

  • I see Psychocandy by The Jesus and Mary Chain, Double Nickels on the Dime by The Minutemen, and Spiderland by Slint. Reply if you see any that I didn't see. :) Such a great song.

  • never get tired of hearing this song..they sound like the beach boys of this generation.

  • love it. love it love it love it.

  • This song changed my life

  • awesome!!

All the damn kids- The Books Stop Here

  • I cry when i hear this song, its so pretty.

  • if you like this, check out neutral milk hotel. they are the greatest. soft silly music is meaningfull magical

  • Scrubs :)

  • James totally looks like a cross between Martin Scorsese and Kevin Spacey.

  • @maverick2you spot on

  • I love his caterpillars! (that sounds odd doesn't it???) :) :) this song makes me happy and I just had to look it up after hearing on the end :)

  • It is a sunday how did you know!!!

(If you see this, and its a sunday "Like" this ) :)

  • my exams finish in 3 weeks and i'm going to be completely free from the international baccalaureate. this song just fills me with happiness i think im going to explode

  • @chamags

Haha, I graduated from IB last year. Good luck with your exams! Also, I love this song. It's really calming.

  • Groovy song & great eyebrows! They're like caterpillars chillin' out on his forehead, grooving to the groovy song :)

  • nice tune, just wish the picture and sound quality of this clip was a little better!!!

  • Does this remind anyone else of pirates or boats or something along the lines of that? Not in a violent way of course....

  • @MrsChetBaker555

    argggggg me matey!!

  • i first heard this song on a guinness ad in ireland 4 years ago and i loved it found it and it has been my favouritesong since! if you don't like this song i pity you!

  • the beginning makees me feel homesick

  • The band is in trouble :( Lot's of infighting lately. I hope they survive, their one of the few modern listenable bands left.

  • trippy

  • @Scyther182 I'm American! and why do you say that?

  • awesome!

  • This song reminds me of spring. and i love.

  • Yeah, great song.

  • Great song in the movie "Garden State"

  • I'm really into this song.

However, I'm not a native speaker so I'd like to ask what is the meaning of the word 'new slang'?

    What are they singing about?

Because I can't understand the lyrics of this song.

  • Times changing I suppose, though its not concrete. However you interpret the song is subjective. The reference to "Gold Teeth" and general angst throughout makes me think that this is a reflection on the past and our modern world now.

  • >>new slang when you notice the stripes, the dirt in your fries.

:: Someone else hit this right on the head.. "new slang" means new thinking, words, mindset.. "new slang" doesn't mean what the kids come up with to name their car this week.. on the contrary, "New slang" is how the old fuddy-duddy's speak.. "new slang" = "new to you slang".. thoughts you aren't accustomed to yet. Basically, "growing up".

  • "Slang" refers to words that are used in casual conversation but are not part of the formal language. Example: Officially, "cool" means "low temperature," but in slang usage it means "good" or "desirable."

And the Shins' lyrics are pretty hard to explain; they use a lot of metaphors and mean something different to each person.

  • Love this song.

  • If you like the Frames you should check out The City Series, an indie/singer-songwriter band from Minneapolis. Their MySpace url is thecityseries, or check out their Facebook page.

  • :22

Looks very much like Slint's album "Spiderland"

  • @TheObserver121 They are reenacting album covers from: Sling, Husker Du, Dave Matthews, The Minutemen, Cat Power, and more. Try to pick them out!

  • i was remodeling an apartment, working.. listening to a rock station, then they played this song and I sort of stopped working and just listened and it took me away...

  • 2:44 looks just like Psychocandy till he gets up, and then it looks like the back of Sister

  • Awesome song, very Simon and Garfunkle.

  • love so much...

  • That song sounds nostalgic.

  • i love this song so much, now its my fsv. song:0

  • saaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaame!

  • i can listen to this song all day

  • Holy Shit! I wanna listen to NOTHING but this song...............mmmmmmmmmm

  • hehe, I had the same experience when I heard it the first time :)

    Kind of a SONG!, :)

  • Haha I know. When I first heard it, it was all I listened to for weeks!

  • love the shins

most songs r beautiful but new slang is by far the most beautful of all sounds

  • WAHOO !!! elle dégage pleins d'émotions cette chanson ! elle est superbe, je ne m'en lasse pas !

  • @thezouks toi tu parle fraçais mec.

    D'accord avec ton commentaire.

  • I could go on listening to it forever.

  • @sam3224 same thing:)

  • One of my favorite songs to play; i slow it down a bit with some flat pickin'. Amen

  • OH MY GOD I FOUND IT!!!!!!

    years of looking :P

    beautiful <3

  • this song is so great....recalls unity

  • Sounds like Hermans Hermits :) Love that inspiration

  • Is that anyone know any other songs like that, its just soooo relaxing :)

  • This song just has an effect on me. Not depression, not really overwhelming happiness, just a calm that puts me in a zen sorta peace. Only The Shins have that power over me for some reason, and I just love every last one of their songs.

I heard of them before Garden State but still loved that the movie brought them more mainstream success they deserve.

  • @amodelqueso ditto

  • @amodelqueso

I absolutely agree! could not have said it better

  • @amodelqueso i know what you mean. i hated indie until i heard this. it transformed me.

  • @amodelqueso your first two sentences say it best. Although i do not know this band very well at all, this song does put me in that zen sorta peace.

  • i love this song..... make it makes me feel so depressed but happy

  • it has the exact same effect on me :/

    man

  • this song is in the sopranos aswell..

  • is 2:44 supposed to be psychocandy?

  • This song makes me feel nostalgic for a romance that never happened... if you get what I mean!

  • This song was on Garden State, i love the movie, and this song is awesome

  • so you must be a 14 year old faggot, being that you looked up the song

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, get the fuck off this page then, you ignorant fuck

  • Let me guess what you listen to. Rap? Rap is for 8 year old confused ghetto children. Not posers like you.

  • hehe. (:

  • shush...

  • I forgot about the Shins until I heard this song on American Idol as background music just now.

    This album is classic.

  • Love.

  • Damn, this is good , very good!

i've just one thing to say, if you like this song, you have good taste of music :)

  • HAHAHAHA....so who decided that?? You..?? you are funny ..just like your comment! :) made me laugh

  • @Valcrist90 Thank you!

  • @Valcrist90 I listen to pretty much every kind of music, my favorite bands are playing rap, pop, metal, rock, electronic music, blues, really everything. And I always come back to THIS song when I'm looking for something to calm myself down.

  • This song is fucking fantastic. It always makes me calm on a rainy day.

  • In my opinion the guitars in 2:15 are a bit too loud, but the rest of the song is so damn beautiful. I nearly cry for happiness, when I listen to this song. Like Natalie Portman said in Garden State: This song will change your life.

  • yea, thats called a solo lol

  • euhm yeah, but what has the fact, that this is a solo to do with the fact, that I think it's equalized a bit too loud xD

  • this is a great song

  • satuday,, midnight munchies and the shins..perfect

  • costa rican beach munchies, waterfall jumping and the shins.. perfect

  • tru dat

  • holy crap i like this

  • perfect smoke song

  • im in love with this song(:

    its so coool(:

  • grandaddy ?

  • yes

  • The last part of the video is a homage to The Replacements "Let it Be".

  • the whole thing's homages to the shins influences. theres husker du's zen arcade and new day rising, slint's spiderland and minutemen's double nickels on the dime, just to name the few the few that i can spot right now
