  • mmmm the letter 1 its a number

  • This is the hardest beat i´ve ever seen

  • To those who think old age makes it hard to play instruments:

My drum teacher is teaching a 68 year old blind guy to play Jazz. He's in a band in Kansas City. He's been learning for about a year.

  • veryyy challengin indeed...xP but it much easier to listen n play.....thank ya... :)

  • great lesson to begin with.. thank you master!

  • This is awful. I can't imagine anyone learning through this and becoming even a decent player.

  • @AdamOuissellat Listen fucko. This would help anyone including you if you even played drums or was paying attention. Instead your just being an ass to look big. He is explaining a couple of beats to use while playing jazz. Jazz is actually a rather difficult style to learn the entirety of so go find something else to bitch about if your not taking the pointers.

  • @RebelionWithoutCause I do play drums actually, better than most drummers but my main instrument is piano. Now, if you want to play jazz then listen to jazz. That's it. Jazz is only difficult to people who don't listen to it. And if you did listen to it you would see how bad this lesson is. I'm not going to react to your abuse.

  • Blech.

  • this guy reminds me of a chicken the way his head moves

  • Uhhh...this guy sounds like he doesn't know what he's talking about.

  • i like the way you call every beat "cool"^^

  • jcgkvhkhkk

  • If i keep reading comments im never gonna learn the drums.

  • @XXConspiricyTheoryXX If I keep learning drums, I'm never going to get to the comments.

  • @XXConspiricyTheoryXX unless you learn how to read fast, as everybody does!!!

  • science can suck my fucking cock, i'd rather learn now that i love and understand music, then be forced to by a parent which would inevitably end in me becoming a self-loathing prostitute.

  • @OGKush2010 Exactly. I wish more people understood this.

  • Thanks for this video, it helped a lot

  • this is a lot better than expert village

  • Comment removed

  • Very good. Especially because it's honestly for free, and not just another AD video.

Just a little too much of "If you look at..." ;-)

  • Dude, what cymbals are you using?

  • check the video " a little bit of jazz for all you who spazz"

  • go at buddy rich speed!!!!!!!!

  • damn, i wished i had opportunity to start early. but thanks for your anwer.

  • @theimpeccabledude it's never too late, you can start anytime you want, any age you want. there's no problem with that. man, you're gonna regret it if you don't ;)

  • its so great that musicians offer help and their skills for free to us. thank all of you guys so much for training, advising and caring so much about about music community!

  • Question: does youf age affect your ability to learn drumming?

  • @theimpeccabledude not really but i learned at a young age and found it easy to learn. Also science shows that the older you are the harder it is to learn musical instruments.

  • @emaster97 bahahaha, oh science and your depressing truths

  • nice .!

  • =O I have those shoes!

  • Well, if you look closely..

  • i'm having trouble with kicking the hi hat. my leg get's lost along the way and i start kicking the hi hat whenever i kick the bass.

  • Comment removed

  • @kvstr1 i dunno why your comment's removed but yeah i saw it and thanks so much! i'm gonna practice that for these couple of weeks and hopefully will get the hang of it! :)

  • @SASJKL Yeah I'm not really sure why lol, but I'm glad you got that, hopefully it helps! Keep drumming :)

  • @SASJKL just takes alot of practice..do it when your working on other things..just work on keeping it on 2 and 4 al the time..soon it will just become automatic

  • erro no tempo camarada

aff fico bravo quanto um cara que e baterista erra o tempo aff

  • great vid thanx

  • If you were good at drumming.. you wouldn't need sheet music.

you'd play by sound.. not paper.

what they are showing you here is basics.. wanna get good? experiment for yourself.

    Forget Sheet crap.

  • @SwizzZYx i would agree but it is also very important to be able to read music. PLaying from feeling will only get you but so far, same as only playing from reading music will only take you so far. Expirimentation is super important though.

  • @SwizzZYx I think you're wrong because if you want to write music you have to be able to read it. So it's good to practice that.

  • @SwizzZYx I disagree. I play for an orchestra and often have to mix percussion parts and drum parts to get the right sound. To remember this I have to right it all down. Are you seriously suggesting people should learn all drum parts off by heart even if they have to be specific?

  • @SwizzZYx hey swizzzy. im sneakin' on you. searched you on google.

  • hay guys my drum teacher gave me a better tip on counting treplets count them

1 ta ta 2 ta ta 3 ta ta 4 ta ta and repet hope this helps :D

  • what comes after the 2nd Triple?

  • mike is an amazing player, u have no idea about how much technique he has,

  • sounds like prostitution

  • if you look close... :|

  • RONALDINHO GAUCHO E NEYMAR WWWORLDCUP2014 BRAZIL Orkut

  • He's teaching basics of Swing music. So I give him credit cus theres some stuff I actually never have been tought before from my private lessons

  • Guy sounds like Edward Current with more rhythm.

  • those who can do, those who can't teach

and those who cant even teach complain on youtube videos like smartasses cause noone can actually have a close debate with them. P*ssies

  • Where can i order the drumbook @ 0:24 please ?

  • @CaRaa45 go to the site all the sheets are there. right under the clip

  • @TheDadrummerboy there are several others also..

    ex. 1-ah-let 2-ah-let...

  • @TheDadrummerboy your right my teacher taought me that to

  • I'm a massive metal headed drummer who's favourite band is Slayer and only 17.

But coming out of my comfort zone and trying some Jazz seems like really relaxed and a good thing to do.

Jazz is the only other style I really would like to learn.

Especially with being self taught, all these crazy double bass, gravity blasts, metallic solid beats.

Now to try something new feels great!

  • @PPLSUP4 Well most metal drummers love jazz. dont get me wrong i love metal too but metal came from jazz.double bass blast beats

  • His snare drum sounds nicer than mine. :(

  • @Talkir It's mic'd, turn that frown upside down :P

  • this is not for beginner jazz drummers this is for beginner drummers period

  • nice simple exercises. well demonstrated. what's the problem?

  • This guy has put out a great book & dvd based tutorial on jazz drumming & it has helped me a lot, he's not making millions! he's teaching Jazz! so obviously his style is laid back & relaxed like the music he is teaching. If you lot want a head banger of a teacher to teach you to play Metal or Thrash then go look at someone else's video. We should be grateful that these guys put this stuff up for us free of charge.

  • That last beat is killing me!

  • puma shoes were cool in 2001'.....

  • @pedalla What a stupid troll comment. What has that got to do with anything?

I am a teacher myself, it will cost you money to have lessons with me.. these guys are giving them away for free. Maybe try showing a little respect?

  • @JayX69suckit you see him as a teacher, for me he is just a random guy...

nothing is free.. he is a part of organization under the domain freedrumlessons, so he probably earns much more money than you...

and your comment also has nothing to do with this fucking lessons so why am i seing it...

  • @pedalla Did it cost you money to see these videos?

No it didn't meaning its free, like iI sai.. free. So your ignorant and a retard is what you are telling me?

Hmm ok you win, I accept your argument :)

  • @pedalla Lol, you're a complete and utter idiot.

  • @Aardvarked88 thanks... judging people on a comment was always a sign of great wisdom...

  • @pedalla You were implying somebody is swimming in money because they're making drumming videos for a website, as well as posting pathetic childish insults in the absence of having anything constructive or worthwhile to say.

You're a complete and utter dipshit and a failure of a troll.

  • @Aardvarked88 i said he is earning money, and they don't give away their lessons for free... the fucking organisation gives them away for free... and what size of a moron can't figure that out...

learn to read, i didn't insult no one, until now.... and i know you think it's the only way you can earn any social acceptance, but talking like an adolescent spoiled fuck is not cool anymore if you are over 16... go on and get a life now...

  • @pedalla Get a life? Coming from the person who watched a free drumming video and only commented on the dude's shows? "they don't give away their lessons for free... the fucking organisation gives them away for free" ..what? Who is this other "they" you're talking about?

No amount of pseudo-intelligent bullshit will disguise the fact you're a massive, idiotic, gaping asshole.

  • Yes i saw "closely"

    Thank you.

  • @dusk2pawn "If you look close..." lol :D

  • i was taught differently maybe theres mroe than one.

  • I want my drums to sound like that...

  • i hate the way he talks

  • @zwieberz don´t listen. Happy?

  • i wish youtube arguments were organized so they were easier to read

  • @theboxisgone2 haha, indeed, great comment.

  • goooooooood

  • Thanks, good lesson!

  • lol wtf, the guy said t his exercise is based on triplets and the beat he's playing with is in 4's

    or am i wrong?

  • @WhereTheCheeseAt its triplets in 4/4, not 3/4. That just refers to the fact that every four beats the ride cymbal is hit 3 times, making it a triplet. Ride triplets with a foot hat on 3 is pretty much the 'standard' jazz beat in most CDs.

  • @WhereTheCheeseAt you can play triplets in 4/4 time

  • this guy is a dick

  • WHAT THE FUCKK IS THE ANNOYING AS CLICKING SOUND!??!?!?!?!?!

  • @AdamManns

if your really asking, i have no idea what your even doing

watching this and obivesly you wernt paying attention becaues

he said it... its called a metronome.

  • @grimsrage what is obivesly? you make that up?

  • @AdamManns if you play drums you must seriously have downs syndrome.

  • @idkwhattonamemyself ..i am enrolled at Duke University majoring in business and law so i doubt that i have downs ( = but thanks for making a fool of yourself ; )

  • @AdamManns You're the one who doesn't know what a metronome is genius. Good try though.

  • @idkwhattonamemyself Hmm.. a business/law major vs. a youtube drummer/crap talker. ha ill give it to you, you win!!! ha

  • @AdamManns I'm studying at Harvard as an engineer. By the way, Engineering degrees pay higher than law degrees. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

  • It's actually kind of confusing because you discuss it in 'One-trip-let'. Not everyone counts triplets in this form, so it can be confusing. Nevertheless, good tutorial :).

  • He kinda talks like William Shatner

  • know of any good jazz drumming books? or a jazz drumming site to learn how to play the jazz style??

  • Thanks! This is a perfect place to start learning jazz. I just hope I can find some more of these. Thanks, again!

  • your good

  • Very patronizing start lol but overall very helpfull

  • i found the second beat was best

  • what does let mean? doesn't he mean the and of 1 or 2 or whatever he's saying?

  • @attackof101 if you listen the beginning, you hear what he means... 1-trip-let 2-trip-let 3-trip-let

  • Um, where the fuck is jared? =3

  • @FindingMyF33t jared teaches rock and funk.

  • Wow, does anyone else LOVES that intro/outro music? *shivers*

  • man der labert mir zuviel!!

  • schon scheiße das man kein englisch kann oder xD...

  • it is good that beginners see what this drummer is teaching.

If you watch theprofessorwilliam on you tube you can also see

how to play basic left foot clave and cowbell technique. And how to

get the right books and teachers.

  • I got the same shoes, in solid black leather. Great for drumming.

  • thanks alot bro

  • Good video. Some assholes on here are God's gift to drumming (and not spelling) apparently, but for humble people trying to get better this is really good. Keep it up. Thanks.

  • thanks for breaking it down clearly and simply for us rookies. you're a good teacher.

  • @iLoveLaurenandLordi:

The purpose of learning rudiments and hand technique is so that your "improvision and creativity" won't sound like shit. I don't want to be blunt but even people who have no creativity or improvision skills but knew their rudiments and basic technique would be judged higher by a panel of judges than someone who doesn't and has to rely on improvising.

  • It never ceases to amaze me how moronic some people can be while still being able to operate a computer.

  • Actually, drumming can be read on a five line staff... each line/space represents a different drum, cymbal, etc. Different composers and/or arrangers use different lines and spaces for the same things, though, so it can be a bit confusing; generally, a composer/arranger will tell the player at the beginning of the composition what line/space represents what.

  • @nkupianist Also, most of the technicalities don't matter once you get to a certain level. You can tell what style of rhythms the composer is going for, and then just play. Any time you hear a marsalis band, they are all half improving/half playing the piece through the whole song.

  • @timmytankTK

I should have been more specific. I was pretty much exclusively referencing contemporary classical pieces (as that's almost exclusively my background) where composers notate exactly what they want. But yeah, in anything but contemp. classical (which is a minority as far as drumset music goes), I agree with you. Even in classical, it's easy to over-specify drum parts; as a non-drummer, I generally am picky about the rhythms but leave the really fine details up to the drummer :)

  • how do you read sheet music for drumming?

  • I'm pretty sure people take drum lessons to learn the rudiments which can help them play way better than people who don't know what the hell they're doing.

  • @notoriousthegreat Now, technique wise, perhaps, but what makes a person a good drummer? Them being able to play something they've had to commit to muscle memory? I think not, but this is just my opinion. Improvisation and creativity make someone a great drummer. Now, technique matters to a degree. But rudiments and what not? They matter about as much as speed does. This is all irrelevant, of course, unless you're trying to be an independant drummer.

  • jazz is very popular dipshit

  • These lessons are for beginners, if you are more advanced go to a more advanced lesson and stop dissing this guy. He gives a good lesson.

  • @panamajack5150 do you have any recommendation??

  • @panamajack5150 agreed this is excellent great instructor

  • he makes them sound way more complicated than they really are.

  • i cant sample you with that boss click running through it :-(

  • Tri-pp-let is a poor way to do it because triplet is a two syllable word not a three syllable. Also the nature of the first two syllables in the three syllable version encourages you to drag on the first two beats and cram the third.

  • No it's not. He's counting it "1-trip-plet, 2-trip-plet". Same as counting "tri-pl-let, tri-pl-let", which is how I learned to play tripplets.

  • your tripplets suck my nuts. Learn how to play them over 100 bpm and than talk to me

  • untill you can pull some triplets like in "Whispers" by All That Remains, you cant brag. i practice triplets to that song lol.

  • Well, I just be damned. i don't know about sucking nuts. But I can do 'em at about 125 bpms. No kidding!!

  • Comment removed

  • 3 in a sixteenth? Whoa! Awsome. I usually excercise with tripplets til my wrists hurt.

  • well, not straight. i can do something like a triplet and the a sixteenth and then a triplet. like in bleed by meshugga.

  • Awsome!!

  • @badcock1 its not important what you think or do!!!

  • Don't think anyone was talking to you in the first place. This is a beginner video, if you want to go on and act like a big shot then go somewhere else and do it.

  • no he is not. listen with those things you call ears.

  • Comment removed

  • Just listen to good jazz music instead of this tripe.

  • This guy is so talented. Why does he show us such terrible grooves?

  • Are these patterns important? Because I played jazz sometimes but cannot play properly all these patterns... Are these really the basics?

  • jazz patterns can get infinitely more complex.

    these are relatively simple.

there could be allot added though

  • For better bass, use a puma drift cat shoes ^_^

  • Puma's are so flippin' awesome for drumming!

  • nc.. the last one.. haha.. wat i like on jazz is the timing..

  • glad i watched this.

not played jazz in a while, and i've just decided that beat 3's my favourite drum beat ever.

  • these beats suck just listen to some jazz drumming on a good record

  • nice vid i needed this so badly since im trying out for jazz band this october and i needed the basics

  • at least this is better than Expert Village

  • A picture of a garbage can will teach you more than "Retard Village"

  • Eek. I agree with you.

  • Hahaha everything is better than "Expert Village" or Village People! LOL

  • @DearDion that guys fucking hilarious

  • @DearDion yeah !!.. expert village is not a good drum teachers !!

  • awesome video

but i will admit his voice is like ross from friends and barack obama hahaha

  • Haha. I can see the Ross, but not really to Obama

  • its subtle but there iiiiis a bit of Obama in there lol i think its because theres a pause in his speech like every three words hahaha

  • Haha... You sure you don't mean William Shatner?

  • this guy could sing one triplet two triplet three triplet 4 triplet to me all night

  • I like this guy, his voice makes me sound safe :)

  • I always like looking back at the basics of whatever drum genre im learning, just to see if maybe ive missed something different to try or to find a new way to modify the basic beat into something unique. I dunno, just something I always found fun about music. You can do whatever you want cause, well, its music and who says you can or cannot do this or that? anyone who thinks theyre better than me or you are n00bz.

  • Just opinion here, i hate when i hear ''one and uh, two and uh...."

  • 3:40 highhatontwoandfour.. *BREATHS IN*

  • Those are pretty cool little beats :D
