I bet the reason why the first scene was in the day time and the last scene was at night was because it took them all day to film those few scene without totally cracking up! :D
I have watched this scene in slow motion, he get hitten on his right eye, but the ball is bouncing and it seems for the viewer that the ball was hitten the other eye.
My thirteen year old nephew likes this one and the "how not to been seen" sketches the best. As funny as those are, I'm a little disturbed that Monty Python's most violent sketches seem to be his favorite.
The other wonderful bit of subtlety is how (intentionally) bad the directing is. I mean, everyone just standing there saying wonderfully unrealistic lines ... until the blood starts gushing, of course.
The very ending is good too! You see Eric Idle as a pundit or critic and he's gunned down by machine guns, spouting blood all over. A caption reads "Tee hee! Tee hee!"
does anyomne keep clicking the timelime just before he gets hit in the face with the tenis ball, just becuase it's such an awseome shot, to think they really hit him in the face with a tenis ball for this sketch lol.
@billtamer it is funny because its not taking the mic out of sam peckinpah but trying to enspire his work as a comedy and its alot better than the people who think there funny when they are just absotute trash
This clip doesn't make as much sense if you don't know who Sam Peckinpah is. He was the director of many western films and was known for his use of excessive violence. Still, it's a funny sketch. That's what I love about Monty Python; even their highly referential sketches are hilarious to those who don't get the reference.
This is probably my favourite Python sketch. It's even better when you include the Eric Idle scenes before and after and the apology after the credits.
@hippiesmacker It is a parody of a musical called Salad Days. Monty Python stated in the intor too that skit that this was the Sam Peckinpah adaption of the musical. Sam Peckinpah had a penchant for particularly bloody and violent movies, like "The Wild Bunch" "Getaway" and especially "Straw Dogs". Today the gag would run along lines like "High School Musical" adapted by Quentin Tarantino or Robert Rodriguez...
It's even funnier if you've seen Peckinpah's films ("The Wild Bunch" and "Straw Dogs" especially). And the original "Salad Days", for that matter. I love Graham's scream! XD

Because "Salad Days" refers to a pleasant time,
the term is used to poke fun at the violence in his films belived unnessary and going too far.
People seeing The Wild Bunch didn't see what looked like an old western, but blood and gore.
000266617 2 years ago 7
They are poking fun, attacking the bloody ("The Wild Bunch" )movies of Sam P.
At the time, critics and audiences hated the excessive violence they belived was unnecessary, and going too far.
