A Christian Response to the Hate Crimes Prevention Act

Every crime of violnce is already a hate crime and is already illegal and punishable by law. To add motivation (for the reason that you punched or stabbed someone) as a separate charge for the same crime is double jeapardy, silly, and just plain unfair. When a man kills his wife, family member or total stranger it's root cause is hate. The law illegalizing murder covers that plainly. Stop letting murderers go after 5 years and "hate" attempted murderers get 30 years.

They should never, ever, make a law that can be used to strip a person of their rights simply for emitting a sound from their mouth. Any sound, no matter what.

On the other hand, no one should be pushing their religions views onto other people, keep it to yourself.

Too many people can't wrap their minds around the freedoms they enjoy so much. Freedom of Speech, Freedom of/from Religion, etc...

The problem you face is that you're using your free speech to violate others freedom of religion.

Everyone who commit hate crimes or judge gays are "throwing stones" which Jesus himself spoke against. By the bible you are NOT allowed to judge, God makes those calls. Yes, it is sin in many faiths... And yes gay folks know this. There is no point in pushing your views which will go unheard or violently disobey the laws set down in the bible by being hateful, violating the golden rule and throwing stones. Just stay keep yourself sin free and let them deal with their own consequences.

It would be nice if those in authority concentrated on convicting actual crimes instead of pursuing imaginary 'hate'' crime legistlation! It is a waste of time and taxpayer money. Whatever happened to "'sticks and stones can break my bones, but NAMES will never hurt me??"

This legislation will have ZERO impact on religious practice. As a Christian I stand strongly in support of this legislation. My Presbyterian church supported it, and the logic is simple: hate is not Christian, and tolerance of it is unacceptable. Matt was not the only victim here, think of the parents. Regardless of whether someone approves of homosexuality, we can agree that legislation like this that reduces acts of violence and hate would be a positive outcome.

@mattsplace85 and this law says that insulting or hate speech would be felonious. So that means everything this man just said in this video is hate speech. If someone hears him say this and goes out and kills someone and says "I did it because I heard it read out of the bible!" then this guy is now liable for inciting a murder.

You can't punish someone based on thoughts. And you can't prevent thoughts by making them illegal.

this law will turn a random bar fight into a felony. this law will turn pastors into criminals for hate speech.... because "everything is alright... just do what feels good and don't let anyone tell you otherwise"

I used to think hat if I thought bad about homosexuality, then I was being homophobic. But I realize that if I am trully taken by Christ, I must live His standards, not the world's! If I trully love people of the homosexual community, then I would share with them the Gospel and fo rthem to turn away from sin and follow Christ.

To do anything less would be a sin in itself. The Bible says that "anyone who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin." We are obligated to love. ^_^

Well, it's clear you don't understand the difference between ceremonial, dietary, civil, and moral law.

But here's the primary difference between our positions. What I said in the video I said out of love for God and love people. What you've said in your posts (both posted and deleted) is said out of a love for sin. I want to see people receive justification through Christ. And you want to justify sinful behavior.

Wrong again. What would be discriminatory and hypocritical would be to exempt one person's sin while condemning another. God is neither discriminatory nor hypocritical. The sin of homosexuality will be judged according to the same standard of God's Law as liars, thieves, etc. What's sick is when sinful people justify their sin and at the same time declare themselves to be moral.

When you say "The Bible says I can own slaves" then you are saying that you (here and now) are a Hebrew, an Israelite, still living in Israel, under Mosaic Law in the time of the old covenant, taking prisoner the occupying people groups of the Promised Land as slaves? Could you support this doctrine with some scripture to prove the point you claim the Bible says about you owning slaves today? Otherwise I would have to call you a "cafeteria Christian" ;-)

Gays r 100x more likely to be assaulted vs heterosexuals & their attacker is 99% of the time a fellow homosexual. Of all the supposed "hate crimes" perpetrated against gays the majority include some kind of sexual assault by "gay-haters" against gays. So who is hating who? Both male & female homosexuals are 10 times more likely to be murdered and their killer is almost ALWAYS a fellow homosexual. The extreme levels of infidelity & promiscuity in gay culture lead to this kind of violent jealousy.

Nowhere in Scripture do we see an exception to the command to preach the gospel if the government decides it is illegal. :-)

Fortunately for all of us, the government hasn't criminalized any speech. Christians are still as free to preach against homosexuality (if that is what they believe) as they ever were, thanks to the First Amendment.

The exact same law has existed for 40 years regarding religious hate crimes, and it hasn't impeded anyone's ability to criticize Islam, atheism, or Christianity.
