You have this image in your head of a bunch of happy hotel customers getting a free ride, but the fact is, I have been homeless in the dead of New England winter, truly fighting for scraps, and it was a million times better than prison. If you don't have anyone to send you money for commissary, you are going to be hungry all the time. People bust their asses for 75 cents a day in the kitchen just so they can have access to a little extra "food", because 1200 calories a day is not enough.
Oh and by the way, health care in prison IS paid for, but it is NOT administered. I waited 17 months to see a dentist while an abscess grew to the size of a fucking golfball in my cheek, and it was almost 6 months before they even gave me an antibiotic. I served 3 years for a non-violent property crime, there were DUI offenders doing mandatory 18 month bids, people serving years for less than 4 ounces of pot for personal use. Your taxes pay for these people to live in 6'X9' cages.
Clean sheets? You have no clue what you're talking about. You would not make it through prison. Have you ever sampled any of the wonderful "meals" that are fed to inmates? Most inmates CAN'T work. The jobs (at 75 cents a day) are all taken. It costs taxpayers so much because privately owned prisons charge what they want, and the system pays it. It's a monopoly. Most of the "food" is donated, outdated crap that can't be sold. Go to jail for 1 DAY. Where's the punishment? You live in a CAGE.
haha ruck u u dick head... i have been to prison im 17 i went when i was 16... its not that easy.... u r a gay ass hole really.... prisons the worst thing ever.... and we r not treated better then u... dose sum guy cum into your house at 3 in the moring and get fucked in the ass..... but u r guy so i no u really wouldent want it..... and 40% people 16 to 40 are lligal imigrants. they had worst then u... so they come to our county after being treaded lik shit u think they gunna get the same?!?!
But I agree that WAY too much money goes toward housing prisoners. The problem is that the majority of prisoners are locked up because of drug related charges. It's ridiculous. We need to change the laws on how to deal with drugs.
Prison sucks because it takes away almost all of your freedoms. Sure, you get 3 meals a day, but you're trapped in the same building for however long your sentence is. Someone extremely close to me went to prison for two years - before he was transferred to the prison he was assigned he was in a county jail - while he was there a man was anally raped so badly that he died. I'm sure women aren't much better - I don't think women's prison is the dyke dream you imagine.
You also make a big deal about how much it takes to house a prisoner which in a large part, I do agree with you. However it does make sense that it takes more to house a prisoner than your home for instance. After all, you don't need 24 hour armed guards and advanced security systems with 10 foot high concrete walls. There Are some necessary added expenses when it comes to housing a prisoner.
Having said that, I do understand where your coming from, its definitely frustrating.
I tell ya I spent the night in jail for one night and I didnt even want to stay there that long... but my bro on the other hand he feels like what you said towards the middle... free house and board... its weird & sad but some people really do feel that way.
health care should be universal..!!!! anyone should be able to go to the doctor or dentist!!!! and while were on the subject i don't even eat three meals a day i can't afford too!!!!! not if i want to pay rent!!!!!
Health care should NOT be universal, if you want free health care, go to med school and be a doctor and care for yourself. I work my ass off to make my 87,000 a year. So I buy my own health care. Why should I have to pay for yours as well? If you want it, bust your ass like I did and get a good paying job so you can afford it. I am so sick of idiots and losers trying to mooch off us who work hard and end up with good careers.
No I am not a doctor, I work as a research engineer. Regardless, Doctors put in a lot of work and effort and take a big risk financially with all that school debt. They worked hard to get where they are and deserve a good salary. While I agree that medical care is too expensive, it has gotten that way BECAUSE of all the programs that attempt to put advanced medical care in the hands of those who don't work to pay for it themselves.
Yeah but the problem isn't really all of the people in this country without health care, it's the hardworking people who DO have health care and still can't afford the expensive medicine/treatments/surgeries they need when they get sick or injured. Some surgeries cost hundreds of thousands of dollars and most decent, educated, employed middle class people can't pay for them. Also - doctors in countries with universal healthcare make a lot of money too.
Yes, but if you want to see the price of health care go down drastically, Than privatize it. The reason it is so expensive is because of programs like Medicaid/medicare. The government throws money at the healthcare industry which gives them the ability to charge exuberant prices knowing they wont lose customers. Which means all the poor get there health care, and the hard working middle class, struggle by with nothing.
If you privatize health care, The entire industry will be forced to have competitive prices. which will make it much more affordable to the average hard working blue collar family.
In this country we cater way to much to those who contribute nothing. It's time we start helping out Joe the Plumber and let Jimmy the unemployed welfare collector start fending for himself.
Take the free money away from these people and you'll see how quick they can all of a sudden go out and find a job.
some of still work hard and can't even afford to eat 3 meals a day! I promise you i work very hard and so does my Domestic Partner, and we still can't afford healthcare! we are not all as lucky as you, i put myself through school and do the best i can and still make less than what it does to take care of one prisoner!!! No, I hear what your saying. What I am saying is that general health care WOULD be much more affordable to lower income families if it were privatized.
Everything the government has thrown money at on behalf of the poor, has drastically risen in price. Whether it be college tuition, health care, or whatever. When the gov. pays for the poor, prices skyrocket for the rest of us who pay for it ourselves.

over 25% of our country's people are getting free medical care courtesy of the hardworking American's tax dollars. That is more than enough to to trigger price gouging by the medical community.
When The government picks up the price tag, it allows for private organizations to charge unwieldy prices because the government won't argue. Which makes it next to impossible to afford for the rest of us who pay for it ourselves. Its not privatized if the government pays for over a quarter of it.

If the government didn't give a dime to the medical community through assistance programs, they would be forced to lower prices exponentially, thereby making it affordable for more people.
being that your so bored, perhaps you should go educate yourself and learn something, go fact finding. The reason are economy is failing is because of this fallible mentality that your somehow entitled to things you didn't earn. The rest of us who do make a decent living are tired of paying for the poor's mistakes in life. You made your bed, you can sleep in it.
I'm bored because you're incredibly dumb. Really I'm bored with youtube in general. I never used to read the comments and I'm going to stop. I'm sick of talking to regular people. Regular people are retarded. And not just regular people - people of average intelligence who are more loud obnoxious than most - most people don't comment. "The reason ARE economy is failing"?? Are you serious?
I was tired and I apologize for the typo. When people start correcting grammar, you know they have nothing of value to say. I didn't bother to correct your poor grammar:
"You are so wrong. And I'm bored, so..."
I don't care about your grammar, I post because kids like you are our future. Most of you are not getting the facts or education you need which is why our leaders AND voters are progressively dumber with every election. Hopefully some of you will have an open mind.
You need to get your misplaced ego out of the way. Your not as smart as you think you are. I get it, you believe what you've been told, not all of it is true. Countries that have free health care aren't always what you might think. Socialism has steadily failed everywhere it's implicated what makes you think we will be any different. I spent the last 6 years studying one of the most challenging fields so my level of intelligence isn't something I am worried about. Have open mind sport...
Prisons are corrupt, Prisons are an industry. Don't blame the prisoners. And you don't want to be there. Doctor? How about staff infections til you're almost dead. I've had two friends murdered in prison. One was in for probation violation the other for possesion
Truth. Google "prison industrial complex" and you'll see that prisons are some of the most lucrative businesses operating, and they increase their profit margins by cutting safety measures and abusing civil rights, which you DO still have in prison. I nearly died of anaphylactic shock when my throat closed up due to an allergic reaction to a shotgun blank gas fired in a random raid of my "pod". I was carried to the infirmary only after collapsing on the floor and coughing up mucus. Health Care?!
hell yeah make them work. i cant afford a gym to work out at but its free in jail. the punishment in this is redickuless. they eat more then i do. yeah equal. i cant afford any insurance. i want to make that. then i would share a lot of that money. hell yeah thats boring. so true the little guy is made to stay the little guy.slaves oh hell no. you so funny. peace. gregg
About prisons, they are very dangerous places. People get killed in them. You have non-violent people in their who did forgery, theft or pot possession, and you have others who committed violent crimes who are locked up for a long time and have nothing left to lose by hurting someone else.
You seemed to change the topic in the middle, from prisoners to the rich versus poor.
I think the world would be better off if everyone had their basic needs of shelter, food and clothing met. I think that would solve a lot of problems between people.
The $30,000 per prisoner per year takes into account the salaries, income taxes and employee benefits of the round-the-clock staff that is required, plus utilities, grounds keeping, and other administrative and management costs. It's not like we give each prisoner $30,000 to live on, with a kitchenette, washer and dryer.
Being imprisoned means a loss of freedom and privacy. You can't undervalue that. People take their freedom for granted. Live in a prison, and you will see that all the so-called amenities don't make up for the small, barren cell that is your home 24/7.
Oh also, The credit card companies enslave the lower income and minorities by issuing them credit cards they know will never be paid off. That is how they make their bread and butter! it should enrage us that they do this. It is a form of financial slavery!
In some parts of PA, they have incorporated prisoners paying rent on their cell and utilizing prisoners for roadside garbage details and other road projects.
Does it bother anyone else that 3/4 of the comments posted are by the author of the video, and most don't seem to relate to any other comments made by anyone? Stop monopolizing your own debate forum, Steph Stance.
Hmmm...first I really don't see 3/4 of the comments being Steph's. Secondly, even if they were, so what? It's her vid and she can monopolize her debate and/or comment to her friends any way she wants. And lastly, if it bothers you, why are you here being bothered?? Just asking...:-)
Watch a few TRU TV documentaries on prison life, and see the below-animalistic level of many of the gang members behind bars, and you might begin to think like Saddam Hussein did. regarding mass-extermination of people.
Also, the older I get (57) the more I see that Socialism might not be a bad idea, along about now. Prison chain-gangs are a good idea, too. Chain gangs bult the interstate highway system in the 1950s and 1960s.
Socialism is not what most have been lead to believe.most of the advertisement against it are the large money makers/cooperate entities.there was a campaign against socialized medicine in the 50's,they even gave out free records with recordings of why it was bad.Sad really.
The gross excesses of greed among the very wealthy is like a death-knell to the capitalist system itself. If I was a billionaire, I wouldn't even miss the money, as long as I had my two or three mansions. A grocery store cashier works their ass off, and remains one or two weeks' paychecks from sleeping in the street. Slavery still exists--Reagan froze minumum wages for 8 long years so the rich could get richer and the poor could get poorer.
Arizona is the only state with a chain gang, and that's only because we have a jackass (Arpaio) for a sheriff. The cost of transportation, supervising guards, and insurance liabilities make it non-viable. All chain gangs would cause would be a media circus and higher prison costs. Is that what everyone wants?
I couldn't agree with you more that people who work should be entitled to medical and dental care. There are so many people who don't receive medical and dental benefits at their jobs. Great post.
bread, water and maybe cheese is all those fuckers deserve! if they commited murder or sexual assault, they need to be put to dead automatically and bam! problem solved!
but you bring up some very valid points...some I've actually often thought about. It's BS the way our system allows for things to be the way they are. But, I don't believe that these things were thought about when the system went into play...nor do I believe that the ideas for our system were fully conceptualized before it was put into action.
I've often considered doing something stupid to get into prison. As much as they are pampered, the damage inmates do to each other isn't really worth it. Do you think those guards "help" to protect inmates from each other? Not likely. But your rant is well founded. We are more humane to a prisoner than a homeless man on the street. It's awful. Great rant!
It disturbs me to see people in Kentucky struggle too provide the basics for their family when just 300 hundred miles away a CEO paid $10,000 for a trash can??? CRAZY!
A Wisconsin prison inmate who was forced to sleep for nearly two months on a wet and moldy mattress at the New Lisbon Correctional Institution was awarded $295,000 in damages in Sept of 2008!
I am certain that numerous inmates are cleaner, healthier and warmer than they had ever been.A lot of these people had not been educated properly,it's unfortunate.
I drive a truck to earn a living for my family. I delivered a truckload of sugar to Snyder, Tx. at a warehouse that supplies food to the prisions in that area. They DO eat better than we do, I seen the warehouse full of food, FREE food for them. We go to Walmart to PAY for our food, things have went up about 30% in the last year, my pay hasnt increased any. Since we cant marry legally, no insurance for our 3 kids. It does suck to be out in the free world.
Oh, damn prison sex and free food! Lock me up with a hot soft butch and I'll be just fine! Oh, yeah and I will look forward to seeing someone fine drop their soap bar on the shower floor. LOL....
is she using prescription drugs? It really doesn't matter, she should have access to to free rehabilitation. They are none existent though because our money is spent on housing small drug users.
no she was a heroin addict for a long time, and is now on methadone...which she's been on for quite a few years. she stays in bed for days at a time and is basically a useless human being. but oh well.
They get 3 meals! Doctor? Dentist? All that cost money right? We also have to pay to have their tattoos removed. You won't service me? Does the number 9 sound good to you? If you know what I mean... If you go to prison, use protection! And women should pressure wash their package area before it's made available to others.
I'm really wondering what prisons you are looking at that seem so glamorous. You say that there is so much to do to "live comfortably". Heres a shocker; prison isn't comfortable (and I've been there). As for your comment about forcing prisoners to do hard labor, I believe we abolished that in the 1860's. Now I understand why the allure of 3 free meals a day would appeal to you, but the race riots, fist fights, guard and inmate abuse are awful. Sexual orientation doesn't factor in to prison life.
Rape and sexual assault are rape and sexual assault, no matter if you're gay or not. I will give you that the prison system in this country is FUCKED, but that's because of mandatory minimum sentencing and overcrowding. Most prisons are removing education and rehabilitation programs, furthering the revolving door system. Although I agree with your digressions later in the video about individuals in society, perhaps you should research more about the prison industrial complex before you judge.
In prison you are not responsible for: electric bill water bill car payments rent grocery shopping house up keep doctor bills Taxes and so much more like making basic decisions that we all have to do.YES prison is restrictive and not glamorous. The fact is they are taken care of like children...
As I said in my previous comment, the loss of freedom can't be undervalued. People love their freedom. Take it away for 20 years, and it doesn't matter what else is provided. I wouldn't say that they are taken care of like children. Presumably children live in a nurturing, supportive, safe environment. I don't think prisons are like that.
The people on top want to keep the rest down below? I gotta say - it's not the people on top's fault if the rest aren't clever or ambitious enough to figure out how to get up there, too.
If nepotism was the main only trick to becoming wealthy and then you got to shop all day, all of the Rich People would have died out long ago. It would be similar to the fate of the Spanish Habsburg line after all of the royal inbreeding, which resulted in the mentally retarded and (thankfully) impotent King Charles II. Maintaining wealth takes effort and intelligence; Paris Hilton is not the norm. If this wasnt so, there wouldnt be so many unhappy lottery winners out there.
Look at the wealthiest and most powerful people, most arent intelligent in the same respect as a surgeon or Yale professor, but theyre clever and DRIVEN enough to surround themselves with a wide range of people (advisors) that do possess that type of intelligence.
Bush had an intense drive for power and was (unfortunately) smart enough to find and engage the right puppeteers to make that happen. If he wasn't ambitious, he would have laid back and just leeched off his family's oil money.
One thing's for sure, we got a lot of problems that need to be worked out!
You're right on Steph! Most people just want their basic needs met, a chance to better themselves, and something to look forward to. Opportunity and equality - that shouldn't be too much to ask.
Prison - don't want to go. I recently saw an article about private companies taking over operation of prisons in some areas and the conditions are so bad it has driven some inmates to take their own lives.
I do think society should aid those who want to help themselves AND stay within the law. We're not all born with the advantages others have. It's the values we are taught that makes a difference.
If prison is made to be a better class of living, for people who actually would rather NOT have the responsibility-they're being taught the wrong values if we ever want them to be valuable members of society. And it's sending out the wrong message to those who DO want to be valuable members of society.
I think they Should have to work, somehow pay back to society. I've heard that some prisoners will actually re-offend to avoid the reality of society (institutionalised), and maybe it's partly to do with the absense of freedom takes away from responsibility.
Responsibility is what they lack!this is something that parents are to teach there kids...unfortunately they don't!Then they grow up and think that they are OWED a particular lifestyle, that is the bigger problem.
people who are in jail for life are not allowed to get a job in jail. sometimes they don't feed 3 meals a day. Sheets are not done all the time. And as far as dentist they what people think, they go and get teeth pulled out not fixed or cleaned.
And don't let me get started with being put in the hole for months. And being forgotten about.
I couldn't agree with you more. Our prison system is f'd up! 3 hots and a cot, cable tv, college education for FREE! I work my ass off to make ends meet. UGH! So frustrating. Back to work I go.
I'll visit you in the "big house". I'll bring you corn nuts and lollipops.LOL!
we are lucky in that respect we pay national 10% of our gross wage insurance mean national health service, private is quicker service in uk, but costs about £50 a month per person
$85 a month private not compulsory. NHS comes out your wages i pay on average £25.00 a week National insurance about $42 a week and £50 income tax $85 a week £17 pension $24 comes out of everyones wages Gross pay £382.12 take home £289.22.
Your ideas about prison are from a pulp fiction lesbo novel not from any prison I know of. I agree we work hard for our tiny health and welfare free lives and the rich pay someone else to pout for them. Didn't you hear? The rich are an endangered species. Don't worry about them though, for 0 votes they got more tax cuts at the top of the pyramid. I will visit you in prison but I would advise staying away from the "captive audience" notion.
yeah , digital telly too, its a fucking joke mate, you become homeless in uk, if you commit a crime, free roof over your head, for a bit. unless you in high sercurity one they are shit. I know people who have been in lol, they get pocket money too and earn more if they work
i here you mate xx not surehow much it costs in uk.i earn £24000 a year $48000 costs £1200 at least each month with out food, better of on the dole or in prison. i here you on the women lol
we bought what we could afford, not what we wanted...then we made sure it was a fixed rate and a monthly payment that could be paid even if we worked at minimum wage.
It is totally messed up. It irks me to know that someone who has committed a crime lives better than I do...and I don't even have health insurance. It's so sad truly! When I saw Michael Moore's Sicko, I was shocked more than I thought I'd be. I only knew the half of it. Now about that champagne in the limo...hehehe

Are you serious?
fuckyoujill 3 years ago

One was in for probation violation the other for possesion
artlife4me 3 years ago

About prisons, they are very dangerous places. People get killed in them. You have non-violent people in their who did forgery, theft or pot possession, and you have others who committed violent crimes who are locked up for a long time and have nothing left to lose by hurting someone else.
ItsCiprianna 3 years ago
You seemed to change the topic in the middle, from prisoners to the rich versus poor.
I think the world would be better off if everyone had their basic needs of shelter, food and clothing met. I think that would solve a lot of problems between people.
ItsCiprianna 3 years ago
The $30,000 per prisoner per year takes into account the salaries, income taxes and employee benefits of the round-the-clock staff that is required, plus utilities, grounds keeping, and other administrative and management costs. It's not like we give each prisoner $30,000 to live on, with a kitchenette, washer and dryer.
BlackRiverBay 3 years ago
Being imprisoned means a loss of freedom and privacy. You can't undervalue that. People take their freedom for granted. Live in a prison, and you will see that all the so-called amenities don't make up for the small, barren cell that is your home 24/7.
BlackRiverBay 3 years ago
Oh also, The credit card companies enslave the lower income and minorities by issuing them credit cards they know will never be paid off. That is how they make their bread and butter! it should enrage us that they do this. It is a form of financial slavery!

In some parts of PA, they have incorporated prisoners paying rent on their cell and utilizing prisoners for roadside garbage details and other road projects.

Chain gangs bult the interstate highway system in the 1950s and 1960s.
smerdley 3 years ago
Socialism is not what most have been lead to believe.most of the advertisement against it are the large money makers/cooperate entities.there was a campaign against socialized medicine in the 50's,they even gave out free records with recordings of why it was bad.Sad really.

The gross excesses of greed among the very wealthy is like a death-knell to the capitalist system itself. If I was a billionaire, I wouldn't even miss the money, as long as I had my two or three mansions. A grocery store cashier works their ass off, and remains one or two weeks' paychecks from sleeping in the street. Slavery still exists--Reagan froze minumum wages for 8 long years so the rich could get richer and the poor could get poorer.
smerdley 3 years ago
That is so true... minimum wage as reassured the wealthy that they will stay where they are.
StephStance 3 years ago
Minimum wages became "the legally-imposed ceiling" for what the employer was obliged to pay the help--begrudgingly.
smerdley 3 years ago
Arizona is the only state with a chain gang, and that's only because we have a jackass (Arpaio) for a sheriff. The cost of transportation, supervising guards, and insurance liabilities make it non-viable. All chain gangs would cause would be a media circus and higher prison costs. Is that what everyone wants?

I've often considered doing something stupid to get into prison. As much as they are pampered, the damage inmates do to each other isn't really worth it. Do you think those guards "help" to protect inmates from each other? Not likely. But your rant is well founded. We are more humane to a prisoner than a homeless man on the street. It's awful. Great rant!

StephStance 3 years ago
I'm really wondering what prisons you are looking at that seem so glamorous. You say that there is so much to do to "live comfortably". Heres a shocker; prison isn't comfortable (and I've been there). As for your comment about forcing prisoners to do hard labor, I believe we abolished that in the 1860's. Now I understand why the allure of 3 free meals a day would appeal to you, but the race riots, fist fights, guard and inmate abuse are awful. Sexual orientation doesn't factor in to prison life.
Lytestrykes1 3 years ago
Rape and sexual assault are rape and sexual assault, no matter if you're gay or not. I will give you that the prison system in this country is FUCKED, but that's because of mandatory minimum sentencing and overcrowding. Most prisons are removing education and rehabilitation programs, furthering the revolving door system. Although I agree with your digressions later in the video about individuals in society, perhaps you should research more about the prison industrial complex before you judge.
Lytestrykes1 3 years ago
I judge because I have seen this take place.

StephStance 3 years ago
As I said in my previous comment, the loss of freedom can't be undervalued. People love their freedom. Take it away for 20 years, and it doesn't matter what else is provided. I wouldn't say that they are taken care of like children. Presumably children live in a nurturing, supportive, safe environment. I don't think prisons are like that.

The people on top want to keep the rest down below? I gotta say - it's not the people on top's fault if the rest aren't clever or ambitious enough to figure out how to get up there, too.
Just sayin'...
WoolTrousers 3 years ago
Do you honestly this that a person like Bush was clever? or even ambitious?
The people on top pull those who a kin to then or married into it ON TOP!It is done every day!
StephStance 3 years ago
If nepotism was the main only trick to becoming wealthy and then you got to shop all day, all of the Rich People would have died out long ago. It would be similar to the fate of the Spanish Habsburg line after all of the royal inbreeding, which resulted in the mentally retarded and (thankfully) impotent King Charles II. Maintaining wealth takes effort and intelligence; Paris Hilton is not the norm. If this wasnt so, there wouldnt be so many unhappy lottery winners out there.
WoolTrousers 3 years ago

Luv the work Steph!
7RaeStorm 3 years ago
I had not heard about that but I do know that private companies have taken over. What a business to be in huh?
StephStance 3 years ago
I do think society should aid those who want to help themselves AND stay within the law. We're not all born with the advantages others have. It's the values we are taught that makes a difference.
If prison is made to be a better class of living, for people who actually would rather NOT have the responsibility-they're being taught the wrong values if we ever want them to be valuable members of society. And it's sending out the wrong message to those who DO want to be valuable members of society.
MooTuchTooSoon 3 years ago
I agree with ever thing laid out.
StephStance 3 years ago
yeh but what's the alternatives?
a) allowing criminals to go unpunished
b) violate 'human rights'
c) Turn to the death penalty
I think they Should have to work, somehow pay back to society. I've heard that some prisoners will actually re-offend to avoid the reality of society (institutionalised), and maybe it's partly to do with the absense of freedom takes away from responsibility.
The punishment is supposed to be loss of freedom.
MooTuchTooSoon 3 years ago
Responsibility is what they lack!this is something that parents are to teach there kids...unfortunately they don't!Then they grow up and think that they are OWED a particular lifestyle, that is the bigger problem.
