So last week, for no reason at all, the chorus to this song surfaces in my mind. "Walkin' around in your circles, circles...." And I almost go nuts trying to remember the rest of the song, never mind the band.
Tonight, I find "Toy Train" by Rymes With Orange, and there's "Rainbow Butt Monkeys - Circles ( finger eleven )" in the Suggestions column. "No way," I think. "Could it be...?" And it is.
This is the happiest I've been for days. Thank you.
Why does everyone think that when a band musical style evolves they are "selling out"? It's not like they went mainstream. Nobody else is making music music quite like they are. It's funky (Livin' in a Dream) and heartfelt (Whatever Doesn't Kill Me). I've been a fan since "Grayest of Blue Skies," and while I like that album start to finish, it lacked the true standout tracks their riskier experimentation of recent years has lead to.
Seriously if you think a song like "Paralyzer" was "selling out" rather than experimental epiphany then you're not paying much attention. It's got disco influences in it for god sakes! It's not my favorite F11 tune (that would probably be between One Thing, Sacrifice, Quicksand, Whatever Doesn't Kill Me, and Thousand Mile Wish to name a few...) but it's anything but a sell out. If you like their old sound then listen to their old stuff rather than wasting time bashing the new.
Rainbow Butt Monkeys is the best name ever chosen for a band. In the early 90's when RBM, Our Lady Peace, I Mother Earth, and a lot of other Ontario bands were just starting to get noticed, They all used tyo play at Front 54 in Thorold. Every time, this was the best set of the night. They're still a good band, don't get me wrong, but back then, these guys were the shit. This is one of those great songs that makes everyone nostalgic.
Hey you guys use to play with a band fron St.Catherines, called Bad Habbit then they changed to Slang. The guitar player is my brother.Travis Ranger. He has nothing but great things to say about ya.
it's weird watching a band evolve like these guys did. this album was a huge influence on me when I was first learning how to play the guitar. It was just so rad and funky. Then they became finger 11 and all started dressing in black and started screaming a lot. then they got huge, and some of their hits now are back to being a little funky. They shoulda kept the name imo. Sure, it was a horrible name, but it was horribly unique and awesomely hilarious
I freaking hate being older, HATE IT....but ....I wouldn't change my teenaged years for anything. I would never want to be a teenager now. These songs make me smile so much. We had some great music to go with those great memories.
Yeah i can understand why they changed there name to Finger Eleven, the name Rainbow Butt Monkeys kinda sounds like a name that a joke band would use like Bloodhound Gang lol, i seen on there Finger Eleven Us vs Then vs Now DVD Scott said that they wanted to be taken more seriously.. which is understandable because when i first heard Finger Eleven used to be Rainbow Butt Monkeys i thought they started as a joke funny band lol
Very cool... funky AND aggressive... SERIOUSLY, this is friggin COOL, if they stuck to this formula and the hard stuff they did later on, they'd be, like, the best band in modern music today! And then the poprock formula happened... >:O
Fuck, still love this song. I remember when they won the contest on what was it, Q107 or 97.7? Have loved them ever since. A wonderful staple of my high school memories.
Slight change of definition here. .Sly and the family stone is funk. Prince is funk. This is alternative. Unfortunately this band went the way of the treble charger and out of our interest when turned pop. One less finger and in much richer color and song writing. How the $%^^ one song "Paralyze" won them an award over a far better album "Hospital music" with non sell out Matthew Good i have no idea.
I loved letters from Chutney. IMO it owned finger11 in the face with repeated face palms. Funk metal? Thats just genius and they threw it all away. I was sad
I just got an invite on FB for them playing at Riverfest in my hometown Brockville in July!!! I couldn't fucking believe it!!! They are the band of my youth!!! The highlight of the 90's!!!
Scotty has one of the best male voices this was in a time where Canadian music was at a peak...man I never been able to retain all of my clothing at one of their shows...the band goes off! A friend of Scotts', now one of my best friends, first introduced herself to me because she thought it was funny I absolutely hammered that CD in my discman (remember those things?) through our college years as if they were some massive band - I was right. Very proud to hear them played worldwide!
OK I had NO idea, that finger eleven was the RBMs WOW. i saw these guys Music West in Vancouver and was super impressed. I think I even had a CD around here. Had no idea! neat!
I saw the Rainbow Butt Monkeys play a free all-ages show at a club called "The Hideaway" in St. Catharines (at the corner of Grantham and Linwell) in 1994 I think it was.
I remember the Butt Monkeys playing in Sault Ste, Marie a long time ago, then years later I saw Finger Eleven on television, and I was like... woah, it's those guys... man they suck now
My response was to sulfur1976 by the way. Saw them three times as RBM and not once as finger eleven. They were molded too much rather than being themselves like this vid!
It always blows my mind how people think a band that has been together since what, '89, can continue to keep up the songs with sick and twisted lyrics. People grow up and grow out of that stage, including musicians. Hell, even Blue October is a lot less deranged now than they were in their previous albums.
Yes it does, this cd was/is great. I saw them when they won the 97.7 HITZ FM rocksearch at the Hardball in Milton that spawned this cd. Every song is great from start to finish!!
i am almost the same way. they were local (i live across the border in niagara county), and more accessible back in the 90s. i dug their sound back then. i just wouldn't say i hate them. i just do not like them nearly as much as i used to like them.
If I ever ran into the lead singer of this band on the street and he tried to tell me that he thinks "One Thing" is a better song than this, I would have to kick his nuts up through his face.

its hard to believe this band turned into finger eleven. what a transition in style. they seem to be moving back a little bit in this direction with paralyzer. rub some funk on it!!
Despite how often we called Burlington "Borington" lets face it, we had it pretty good. St. Marys, Friday night live, even the Lions. It was all about the local bands. The highlight of my teen years in Burlington. Rainbow Butt Monkeys, Smoother, even Euphoric Crush. I'm a fan of Finger Eleven, you guys get my thanks for your hard work and determination doing what u do not only now, but back in the day for making just another burlingtonites teen years bearable, even enjoyable.(Nelson High).
good stuff! saw them live in south fl over a year ago. right about when the new disk was to come out. they rocked and hinder sucked! well i went to see finger 11 anyway. got to get my ticket signed by some of the band and rambled on with scott about the weather or something? nice guys! i hope to see them headline a show. should have seen them last summer in lancaster pa. oh well anyway i like the rbm stuff besides the name and i hope they put that stuff out again. -neil
I remember they played in Carleton Place, Ontario at the local arena, upstairs. They had three opening bands and there was probably about twenty of us there the whole time. By far the best show I've seen to date. The amount of energy and emotion was incredible. They played a cover of AC/DC's Back in black too. I still have the blue shirt with the yellow monkey in the center of it.
not anytime soon, there isn't enough of a following there to merit a finger eleven tour now if a bigger more well known band to Australia were the headliners then it would be more plausible
i seen finger eleven in ottawa with ozzy. i've always liked the band and moreso after seeing them live. not sure what his name is but the lead guitar guy kicks ass live...what a fuckin' awesome show he puts on
dude finger eleven is good did they change or something first there like rock in 'DRAG YOU DOWN' and in ONE THING and PARALYZER i think they changed did they have a new singer or something lol what name is RAINBOW BUTT MONKEYS its a sick name but totaly weird
i seen them in windsor in 1996, backing up i mother earth....i love this song....the guitar player on the left is fucking nuts in concert....that fucker never stops jumping around....excellent
He was an excellent drummer but really shy didnt fit in with the rock star life.. Plus right after they released their first album (tip) as finger eleven in canada in 1997 their record label dropped them, so rob decided to head back to school to become an engineer, he has a great job now and no regrets cause that life really wasnt for him..
I love bands that are able to incorporate funk into their songs. It adds so much more depth and fullness to the music. I'm happy Finger Eleven kept a lot of that through their albums.
i though they used to call them self butt monkeys to be an another weird all.... i though they were another mocking band i don't even know why they called them selfs that

Are you guys going to be touring Australia again soon as i'd love to see you playing live your music rocks
kiwileese 3 years ago
not anytime soon, there isn't enough of a following there to merit a finger eleven tour now if a bigger more well known band to Australia were the headliners then it would be more plausible

why did Rob Gommerman leave the band anyway? .... did he wanted a normal life?
sikokiller12 4 years ago
He was an excellent drummer but really shy didnt fit in with the rock star life.. Plus right after they released their first album (tip) as finger eleven in canada in 1997 their record label dropped them, so rob decided to head back to school to become an engineer, he has a great job now and no regrets cause that life really wasnt for him..

yeah it is a great record... hard rock funky songs :)
F1NGERELEVEN 4 years ago
I love bands that are able to incorporate funk into their songs. It adds so much more depth and fullness to the music. I'm happy Finger Eleven kept a lot of that through their albums.

it made it to like #13
