  • Dont forget he might have gotten this knife for free, find a none commercial person for true reviews.your life could depend on it

  • Bad ass blade! Like to get one! Using WD40 to help the blade slide through the wood?

  • the knife rocks till it fails and breaks on you while batoning...

FAIL get something else if you life depends on it

  • @vjanda1 agree trash knife,How you like Top knives? Heard some have 1/4 thick blades. Esse knives suck big time

  • @badapplez1 The Tops Armageddon is same size but almost twice as expensive. Not heard of any failures. For the money the RTAK II shouldn't be snapping nowhere near as often as is reported. Rubbish

  • LOL you have funny mu stash

  • Try a Fallkniven A2.

  • Hey Nutn! Would you consider the Ontario RD 9 on par with the Ontario RTAK II in terms of wood processing and survival duties.

    THX, Scott

  • I hope Ontario back up their products- just broke my blade on a 55 degree day on a small piece of oak batoning. Many more failures posted on you tube. Do your research.

  • @nutnfancy Which would you recomend more; the RAT-7 or the RTAK II?

  • He chops wood better than Abraham Lincoln.

  • I own an Ontario SP-8 machete (perfect baton tool) BUT it is not legal for EDC, in Texas (5.5 inch Max) ...

... I just purchd a Becker BK-9 and will have it cut-down, by a machine-shop, to 5.48 inches @ 90 degrees to the spine (no point ... squared off) ... I am doing this because, in Texas, the blade length is measured from the handle and my current SP-8 has a churl that takes up 1/2 inch of precious length ... The BK-9 is a ~.25" blade that runs all the way to the handle ... for a 5.48" wedge

  • @phrankus2009 its legal to carry an oversize knife while camping or hunting or other outdoor activities, just not on your person while not doing somthing like that.

  • @Kylef7735 Yes ... and, thanks. Problem is that SOME LEOs are over-zealous and I often hike in municipal and county green-belts, where over-night camping is not allowed.

... Also, I use public mass transport or walk or ride my bike and that complicates "intent" even further. I am intending to have a Jumbo Waist-Pack or a Camelbak Motherlode with an "all season" EDC contingency loadout, combining an urban EDC with BoB, GMH, etc.

I can get stuck, on foot, far from home, overnight - no bus.

  • @phrankus2009 Why would you be carrying a knife like this when not overnight camping?

And yes i know the laws, im from the lone star state as well.

  • @Kylef7735 The short answer is that I can easily get stranded, many miles from home, overnight, and no longer drive a car ... Of course, atm, there is a State-Wide burn ban, so this is all moot, until we get some serious rain. The longer answer is that I want to be able to "go mobile" and be "self-contained" at any time, wherever I may be. You cannot use a tool if you do not have it with you. A larger blade is so fundamental and essential that I really should not need to explain my reasoning

  • @phrankus2009 Hmm.... whatever you say.

  • @Kylef7735

    Indeed !

  • @Kylef7735 Also, Bowies ans swords and tomahawks are expressly forbidden weapons ... The law does not even define them clearly, leaving interpretation up to LEOs and the courts. Strictly up to the officer and the D.A. ... I just bought a Micarta BK-2 and a Cold-Steel Voyager XL ... The BK2 is 5.25" and the Voyager (plain-clip) is 5.5" so both are legal EDC 24/7 (except no lockers in San Antonio ! ). My 18 yo daughter is going to Oregon, for college, they have no length limit ... she gets BK9

  • hi i am a knife fanboy and im thinking of buying a knife and im thinking of buying an rtak2 or an kabar so wich would you reccommend cus obviously you know alot more of knives than me.

  • RTAK II could be a beast defensive blade against 4 legged beasts!

  • I'd love to be able to pack more, but that means having to leave the car somewhere. Where I live, there are a lot of "diverse" "youths" who would vandalize and steal everything in it, and set the car on fire.

  • hey nutn or veri... shoot me straight... considering all pro's and con's of both knives.. cost included... would you go with a esee junglas or an rtak 2 ? I know there are alot of factors and my needs may be different.. but your opinion.. I value it..

  • @grapplingtech777 Nutn says he recommends the RTAK2. -- Veri

  • @nutnfancy can you ask nutn whats his favorite small , med, and large survival knives

  • Hey fancy when will you cover any survival axe in your films eh?

  • Hey Nut, what did you re-profile it with?

  • @85wifebeater defensive tool? What, are you hiking through Mordor??

  • should i get this or the SP-50?

  • @1911gavin Id go with RTAK II

  • chek out the busse knifes that is serious things

  • @85wifebeater Though I really wouldn't consider either a defensive tool, the Trail Master is lighter and the grip allows for various holds. So, if defense was a criteria...trail master. In truth though, the Recon Scout [I have this as well] is better than both for defense. Just feels like a great tool in hand.

  • @85wifebeater Still following this post...I've used both. Both are great survival tools. To me, the RTAKII feels more like a parang or golok [small heavy machete] than a knife. I refer to the RTAK as a survival tool rather than survival knife. The TM, though large, retains the feel of a knife. It is lighter. It is all in the handle. The handle of the RTAK is large and very hard...like that of a heavy chisel. In use, the RTAK takes more strikes to baton--because it is thinner. Both great

  • What a knife, it's great!

I would like to get it with serrations!

  • Do you have any neck knife ? Can you do a review on ESSE IZULA ?

  • I am planning on getting one in the next few months.. I don't really NEED it... I just want it... damnit! =D

Great review.. thanks for all your hard work.

  • He Nutn, you have to do a TTR on the ESEE Junglas. It's more or less the same knife as the RTAK-2 but there are minor differences and improvements. The sheath is absolutely "THE BENCHMARK" for fixed-blade tactical sheaths. I think you'll agree that it couldn't have been done better. It's literally perfect, IMO. Check it out.

  • in radio comms, you dont say over and out. over is im done talking now you talk. out means conversation is done. (person who starts comms can only say out). fyi.

  • Hey nutn are cabins in the rockies expensive or are there any available for purchase.

I would like to have a getaway cabin.

  • I just started splitting with a large knife, but have split a lot with an ax & maul. Is there a reason the wood to be split is directly on the ground and not on a base log? Too much stress on the knife? Thanks for the help Nutn or anyone else seeing this.

  • This guy did a field and destruction test on the RTAC and only gave it 3 stars. He IS veru brutal and they are UGLY tests to failure, if possible knifetests(dot)com The test that blew my mind was the Cold steel Kukri machete, it survived incredible abuse before final failure and got 6 stars. They are less than $20 ! One additional feature of machetes like these is they make pretty good emergency weapons in the right hands ( I teach Kali)

  • The Ontario 12 and 18 inch machetes with the D guard handles are WAY cheaper and can do anything the RTAC can do, and more, for 15% the price. I have one 18 inch that has survived a decade of hard field use, and was even run over by an 18 wheeler at freeway speed. Reminds me to always check kit when the day is done (forgot it on my fender)

  • its a bit too big, id rather carry a machete and a good pocket knife or my esee 5

  • @wereyuan You cant baton with those.....

  • When chopping wood, one should never put one's fingers on top of the log.

  • I just picked one of these off amazon for 30.90 + 9 bux shipping! I got the last one from the vender so yeah.. They are around you just have to keep checking.

  • There is a knife retailer using this video as a sales aid. Check it out.

    Fern knifes

  • Wot kinda gloves are those? They look like they allow for a lot of dexterity like mech's gloves, not too thick.

  • @onetaothree those are mechanics brand gloves

  • 4:46 sound effects

  • I wouldn't mind seeing you do a a review of a kukri in action. Have you had an opportunity to try one out?

  • Hey Nutnfancy,

PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAASE tell me where to buy an RTAK2. I cant even find it in the ontario website. I'd really appreciate it.

big fan by the way thanks for the vids

  • @pesarirooni62 look on yourcornerstore(dot)com they have it for the cheapest i have been able to find it.

  • @pesarirooni62

    Google it.

  • @pesarirooni62

Ebay, i just ordered one from there thanks to NUTNFANCY and his reviews!

  • tbh, id never use one of these types of blades. A 4 inch bushcraft knife and a good hatchet performs better than one big blade, and its about the same weight, its ridiculous to carry one of these in my oponion

  • AHAHAHAAHHA "its a mofo to carry in"

  • nutn or ver. What is the best way to care for the knife. Meaning what should I use to sharpen and stuff.

  • Great knife, and a good way to demo it! thanks for your review.

  • If you are going to pack such a heavy blade into the woods to be used basically as a hatchet, why not buy a lighter cheaper blade like the Cold steel Kukri machete for $15?? It is pretty, but why is this better?

  • that is a beautiful knife. dose it cost a mint?

  • As of 3/9/10 SMNW has the Rtak-II for $70 deliverd! I got mine!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @jon56shane who's smnw I'm not familiar with them

  • @buyer520 OOPS! smkw Smokey mountain knife works. In TN. USA. Good folks, good prices, no hassle returns! I also love Your Corner store! Where I got my Condor golok w/ sheath deliverd for $45! Had my Rtak for a while now. I have really beat the crap out of the thing and love it! I was concerned about the thin tip but It bores into hard wood so good enough for me! Plastic ensert does need to be delt with ( knife rattles in sheath, eech! ) Other wise good to go!Jon.

  • So much easier than an axe.

  • most people dont know that WD-40 acts as a solvent and can make ur knife rust faster , i suggest Windlass Rust blocker , which is a (VpCI) vapor phase corrosion inhibiter developed 4 the military and NATO, the metal seeking vapors form an invisable layer of electrochemical inhibiters that seal metal against air and moisture, its only 10 bucks from Atlanta Cutlery Corp.

  • @davinicus1727 are you sure? if i search the web i have over 10,000 people telling me it's not bad for the blade and its acuallly good. so 10000 to one who should i trust?

  • and you take every time you into the forest go along, this wd 40?

  • yes, he says he does

  • i love this knife - BUT - all a huge blade like this one is good for, is felling trees for either shelter or wood, or maybe defensive purposes when there's no bear spray around. in that regard, i'd think something like the cs bowie machete would serve much better, since it's like HALF the weight, 1/5 THE PRICE, and even has a bigger/longer blade. plus, we're not all KNIGS OF CUTLERY like YOU, NUT"N, with knife collections that rival current small home values . . .

  • @TheAgentOfTruth With my Rtak I can chop, carve, bore a hole in a fire board for bow drill, bore hole for bambo friction fire starter, baton knotches for lashing, baton the wet wood off a pice for fire, cut all manner of things. scrap up tinder with the back of blade, spark my ferro rod, pound stakes into thre ground, AND make a thug along the trail in the jungle put his machete away and get off MY trail! Jon

  • got mine in the other day and make me wanna chop up everything in my house...thanks for the info

  • @Ninja650rjosh hahaha I feel like that sometimes

  • rtak 2 ....i was choping it threw a log against the grain to see how long it would take...after do soo my hand muscles were hurting and tightening up ...full tang really takes its toll on your hand... LOL

  • I got mine last July, I carry it for "Battoning " thugs, works well.

  • Just got mine in the mail. Awesome. The video only kinda conveys the scale of this thing... I was surprised with the size of it. Can't wait to try it out.

  • I felrt the same as you. I was very surprised by the size of it when mine came in the mail.

I brings to mind a small Roman Gladius! LOL. Not that I have ever held one of those.

  • That's fucken beautiful, hope they sell them in australia.

  • I've watched your vid about the RAT 7, seen your comments and found them interesting. I'm planning to get the RAT 7 ( not serrated at all) 1095 steel version. Is it a good choice? And also.. can you recommend to me a knife sharpener for the survival knife i'm getting? Thanks

  • 1095 is a high carbon steel, so go for it. Also, try to see if you could send your knife to John Ftizen at Razor's Edge in Salt Lake City, Utah, he's by far one of the best knife sharpeners, and knife makers i've ever seen.

  • Check out the Lansky Sharpening System here on youtube.

  • Thanx for the video, bro...

  • nixthematrix i understand that u were simply trying to give some safety advice however i wouldnt say he was preparing to chop he was simply demonstrating the weight of the blade

  • SWEEEEEET !!

  • At 1:38, he's holding the log with his left hand, while preparing to chop with his right. His left thumb is positioned over the top of the log. If he slipped, the top of the log would act as a chopping block, and he could lose his thumb or part of his hand. I'd recommend never holding a piece of wood with one hand, while chopping with the other. You could set the wood up against something instead, like another piece of wood, but I'd keep all body parts away from the chopping area. Nice vid tho

  • Why wouldn't you use an axe?

  • might not have an axe (i.e. plane crash, getting lost on a hike, etc..)

  • and an axe is heavier than a good knife too

  • you can have more applications of use if you have a knife.

  • its heavier

  • exactly

  • "WOAH! WOAH!!"

    your such a badass nutnfancy.

  • i have 4 knives but all together that is bigger than all of them put together

  • Cold Steel sells many good knives at good prices- otherwise, the BEST bet for the money is ANY k-bar, BECKER by Ka-Bar is TOP OF THE LINE>

  • Are you joking? Cold Steel's knives are so overpriced if you buy it from them.

  • Sporkman165 thats why you dont buy retail.

Yourcornerstore is a good choice, sometimes the best, and nutnfancy likes them, A LOT

  • hey I like my knives big but cheap do you know where i could get a cheap knife

  • i would keep my eyes open for a used one if 80.00 is to much.(that is what i payed for my RTAK2) my wife likes her bk9 alot and they are a little cheaper.:)

  • what would you recomend the ontario rtak2 or the ka-bar heavy bowie, for batoning?

  • Ka bar heavy bowie all the way! They are basically the same length but the Ka Bar is thicker and better for batoning. So definitely the Ka bar heavy Bowie

  • @JTadventures I agree the Ka-bar is a little better at batoning but the clip on the back of the Ka-ber really chews up your batton. The Rtak batons jusy finr. I wouldn`t make my choice on that alone! Jon.

  • that stinks, I have had blades break before like that. I would send it back if you havent already. They should cover that.

  • nutnfancy, I guess all blades have their limits but this week end in 70 degree weather I was batoning threw a 7 inch log n was stuck. I usually don't split suck big logs but felt confident it could do it. Like on one of ur vids I got someone to baton while I held the knife. On the second strike it "snapped in two." I could not believe it! My virtually indestructable rtak II lay in 2 usless pieces. I doubt the waranty covers this and I only had it 3 months. I feel this is worth mentioning.

  • Yeah, sorry about the grammer. This was my third attempt to post this comment and I didn't expect it to post.

  • send it back and tell them what happened. they'll probably replace it. that's not really too much abuse and the knife should be able to handle that.

  • maybe you just got a lemon.

  • what is a lemon?

  • a dud

  • what?

  • wow! that suck bro! I was thinking about buy one but don't know anymore!...

  • each and every tool can be broken. Just take care of you blade and don't push it unless you have to and it'll treat you well :P deepwood made a bad call, lessons learned I guess

  • nope.. IMPO.. you'd be better off getting the Fallkniven A2.... its very expensive.. but it laminated steel... and ultra high performance ... in freezing cold or scorching heat.... that sucker never fails... with hard but right use that is...

  • lmao!

damn that blows, I guess you get what you pay for. I can't watch this whole video, what kind of steal is it made from?

  • 1095 Plain High Carbon,

  • thank you for the info.. i was wondering if it was worth spending the extra money on the ultra expensive but ultra high performance Fallkniven survival knife... now i know i'd better do that... thanx..

  • @deepwoodssurvival I have to say send it back! I have beat my without mercy to the point of stuck and back out with no problem. I`m suprised that it broke. Jon

  • @deepwoodssurvival ...i cant believe yours broke ive put mine through hell and it still goes strong

  • @deepwoodssurvival Don't feel bad, these blades are not as indestructable as one would like to believe. Batoning is a dangerous game to play with such knives. The steel is thick, hard, and once you start hitting twisting grains and knots in the wood, it becomes only a matter of time before any knife fails. I suggest an Old Hickory or Green River knife for such abuse; they are no choppers, but will handle much more than an Ontario or Becker any day.

  • @deepwoodssurvival probably it's your batoning technic that sucks not the knife -.-

  • @droptodead95 I'd have to agree with you, because I have had this knife for over a year and I use it for everything. Solid knife. "deepwoods" may have had an anomaly happen. It could happen to any of us.

  • @deepwoodssurvival where did it break?

  • @deepwoodssurvival What was your back up blade? I ask because I'm looking for a good back-up to the rtak 2

  • @deepwoodssurvival You can use the point side as a throwing weapon =/

  • i love all of ur vids im just getting into camping n stuff and these vids are very helpful it wood be be cool if you made a video on the kershaw outcast

  • Awesome blade,,kick ass video !!

  • present your wood lol beautiful blade though

  • I wonder how John Fitzen Warthog compares to the RTAK II performance wise. It appeared to be a slightly shorter thicker blade but without a sidebyside its hard to tell. But both are made in the USA which means I would buy them over an overseas product any day.

  • UAH UAH!

Looks badass man. Loving that blade.

  • lol

  • Dude you're a beast with that blade. Roar.

  • well my rat 5 is the best bit of kit ive ever owned bought or borrowed so the rtak2 at nearly twice its size is gona be a tree muncher, i love all rat knives but the black powder coat can make it a wee bit harder to get the blade thru larger logs,, but i always fully recommend RAT knives

  • Im 15, this a good blade for me, I hike with a group of people my age. but we meet adults at check points, should I get one of there, or just live with tearing trousers because i couldnt cut "that" damned bush down? Anyone who knows answer.

  • I know nothing about nothing but I'd say go with what's safe for you. If you can honestly handle a big blade with responsibility more power to you. But if you hike with a bunch of goof offs I'd say get something smaller, and perhaps less dangerous. Not because you'll mess up, but because they might. Anyhow, my 2cents.

  • what would a "cheap" (10-50$) knife be, I am considered too young for long blades like the RTAK II or the recon scout, I had the "buck alpha crosslock" which failed on me.

  • any Frost Mora knife will do (Frost Mora Clipper) very cheap very good though.

and a small axe and learn to use it and you will have no need for a big knife

  • frosts mora laminated or high carbon, the are about 20 bucks.

try them. you cant chop or baton with them but the ar excellent and promoted by the famous survival expert Ray Mears.

  • (4:29) Lol yes I do. ( ;

  • plz make more videos showing the cutting power of knives, also could you talk about the price

  • wat wuld u say about the cold steel srk

  • it has everything to do with what kind of fire power youthink it has before you pack it.i think a hatchet has great fire power or a kukri. some don't use what works for you and be comfortable! great job nutnfancy

  • I was going to get at Rat-7 but I think I am going to buy an RTAK II as soon as yourcornerstore gets some in. Great video as always brother.

  • Good stuff as always and yes it feels good to get primal!

  • O wow I learned something new!

  • I love at 4:45 he's like, "Oooohwah, ooohwah" You rock nutnfancy!

  • thats NUTS!

  • 5:18 that's some nice accuracy

  • so i hafto present my wood.....hmmm i mean my blade to the wood. got it

  • heheh

  • I've watched many of his videos, and he sure likes big knives, especially for their chopping/splitting capabilities. What's wrong with an axe/hatchet and a smaller knife for fine carving, etc.?

  • If I had to channel nutnfancy real fast...

"Some guys like an axe over a big blade and the sawvivor, and if you like it, then I got nothing but respect. But for me, in the great out of doors, its just bad weight." or something similiar.

It seems to me that he is just more comfortable with a knife. Its a personal choice in a lot of ways.

  • agreed, it is a personal choice as well a a capability thing that weight of an ax or hatchet can really wear u down. But for maybe a car camper the weight is all right but again if your ruffing it to the site weight is crucial.

  • was looking for a good blade and that is it. thank you!!

  • Looking at NutnFancy and other reviews i def. am looking into purchasing one of these deadly RTAK 2's for myself. It seems like a great blade thx for the great vid Nutn keep postin your good shit!

  • nice vid. i was wondering is the only difference between the RTAK 2 and 1 the extra inch on the rtak 1? or is there more?

  • AWESOME!!! Thanks Nutn!!

  • the only i don't like about these knifes is than you state they have to be ground sharp to cut wood, you said you dont use oil stone to sharpen them? how you going to sharpen it in the wild?

  • Nutnfancy says the knife ways 30 oz. I looked the knife up and the knife was only 20 oz. Which is correct?

  • look at'David Bolstad world champions'(for example)on youtube.now that's an effective tool for in the woods.

  • you might wanna mention at some point that this knife gets brittle in the cold,, i just chipped the edge of mine about a week ago on a 35 degree day. other than that i recommend it all day. and the sheath can be tweaked a little; just shim that factoryinsert out with a smaller knife --a couple drops of glue is all that holds it in--, and heat it a little and press in on the areas you want to hold the blade. it gets plyable with heat like kydex. but unless you do that that sheath kinda sucks.

  • Is yours a D2 or 1095 steel?

  • the one he used? it was a 1095 steel

  • expect the nutnfancy took this knife out in 18 degrees weather and hammer the crap out it. And he said there was no chip or anything!!! check his about making a fire in the winter!!!

  • what is the difference betweem RTAK and RAT?

  • GOD DAM!! That is one huge knife.

  • well, you cant judge a knife you dont own, If i could do it over i would never have bought mine, I would have bought a kershaw outkast instead.

  • I just ordered one of these. I like the built-like-a-tank design. I also like the fact that it can operate like a machete for clearing brush around the campsite.

  • I also like the fact that it can be used to defend your self against lions, tigers, bears, saltwater crocodiles, hippopotamuses, and elephants. ;-)

  • just curl your four fingers under,,,

    to the first knuckle

  • I wrote to santa for an RTAK II.

    X) I'm so excited!

When is the review going up?

  • perfect demo, i wish every product demo is as clear as yours. you present well and teach along the way.

  • see my way is to reduce your heavyness in diffrent things other that tools

    heavy tools are good tools

    light food

    light tent

    take as little as possible

  • good vid, I own this knife. the only cons is the crappy sheath, bad balance. all the weight is in the handle. to me its just an oversized knife that is no good for chopping. I reccomend a ka-bar kukri or cutlass

  • Nah, man. The sheath isn't REALLY nice but it's usable and you can buy kydex and make your own. As for the balance, thats just not true. Unless it had solid metal handle scales the balance COULDN'T be towards the handle, the blade is just too massive (even with the dense micarta handle slabs). I haven't gotten mine yet but it looks like it would balance about an inch ahead of the hilt (right where it should be for chopping and slashing).

  • when chopping bigger pieces of wood, it may be useful to place the stem on another (huge) piece of wood instead of placing it on the rather softly forest soil, but anyway I agree the knife has a good chopping performance

  • it looks litle like RAT 7

  • Yeah, same basic design.

  • very cool i will have to look into one of those thanks for the awesome review im now a subscriber.

  • But, how do you make firewood out of the piece you use to baton?
