He's a revolutionary and he'll always be doing his own thing. Doesn't sound black metal? No it doesn't. It is but this is not what I think when I think black metal. So how about appreciating what it is instead of what its not. It's overproduced. Well before it was underproduced. Honestly I think its more about statement than tone. But it does sound very unique and otherwordly. And we finally see him near the infamous gate on the album cover... to mystical liberation. Freedom from trends etc.

When Burzum started, there was no black metal dynamic. Varg created his own sound that would set the standard for black metal.

I still don't know what to think about this album. It's clearly overproduced because that's all he did, was reproduce old material. And it's hard to tell what vibe he's going for, because whenever you start to get into it, something unexpected throws you off. I guess it would take lots of listens before it doesn't sound awkward and flows in a meaningful way. But despite that, it's meaningless to say its not Burzumy or black metal enough etc..

The problem with this release isn't the music, its the mastering. It was mastered like a mainstream pop album, hot on the treble and brickwalled dynamics. If you take a look at the original Burzum albums you will notice they sound a lot more dynamic, while this just sounds loud and obnoxious. On the music side of the coin I think I actually prefer it to the originals, it sounds more refined and more thought out or something.

I'm what some call a true kult fucker and i love what he has done with this album. Sure there's no necro sound but this is still one dark song and the riffs are frozen. At the end of the day these are Varg's songs to do with as he wishes. Also he doesn't allow any torrents of his music so if you want it, buy it. As it should be. None of these artist are millionaires and it takes cash to release albums.

@TrueDarkMetalhead Did you notice that it's ''just'' Spell... on the original demos from '91? According to Varg himself, Euronymous (or someone at DSP) added the word black without him knowing. So I guess Varg is correcting that mistake. This song is my personal favourite, so I don't really like the dense sound of this re-recording :( but I think Channelling... and Key to the Gate sound awesome!
