It's a bit rambling, but the way Bull uses harmonic progressions is quite lovely.

It is expected to "ramble". It is a Fantasy - meaning no preset style or dance form. Hence, these are improvisatory in character.

It's the music that would become or evolve into the English Baroque.

Baroque is music that took place after 1600, so before would be considered Late Renaissance.

There is still a layer of piety and austerity that is attached to ancient music, which separates it from the true Baroque.

To me the difference is in the balance of the voices. With Monteverdi, one voice becomes predominant, the rest accompaniment.
