  • Thank you. great lesson!

  • that thing on the 9:46 was me when i found out i was doing it all wrong for a looong time

  • Gave that pitch vibrato...

    Pitches love vibrato.

  • @kateisblue rofl

  • Thanks for the lesson :) They are very helpful. Though I just have to point out something; your fingers don't actually have muscles in them! :D I think that that is quite interesting

  • @Jazz0Vs0Metal It is true.

  • @Stratocaster42 Right. Actually the muscles that moves your fingers are in the forearm. Anyway, the guy in the video explains good. I think he made the point.

  • Is it so hard to do on acoustic or it's just me?

  • @iMPRE7ed it's easier on the electric guitar cuz only to push the string on the fretboard with an acuostic is much harder than an electric

  • Useful tutorial! Thanks!

  • Great lesson, I am starting to get it, thanks a lot.

  • Thx a lot! You're a great teacher!

  • i use a masturbatory motion

  • Thnx man it helped me à lot :-)

  • Thank you

For way too long I've only been using my fingers, and never got to do a succesful vibrato on the high e string.

  • I've seen people do it vertically .

    how come ?

  • @InuMS When you get stronger hands, you can begin to be able to position it vertically and still be able to do it, people like Dimebag Darrell is a good example of someone who does it with a vertically positioned hand.

  • what kind of telecaster is that??

  • Very nice lesson with good clear information. I have been thinking about doing a set of online ones like this myself I just find it very awkward talking to a camera by myself, you make it seem very natural!

Those wanting to hear some great vibrato should check out Chris Amott, I think he has the best rock bending/vibrato its physically possible to get, I strongly recommend checking out as many videos as possible of his lead playing and trying to replicate his technique, its unbelievably great.

  • hey, i think someone took a crap on your desk... oh never mind, it's an apple computer. hard to tell the difference. :p

  • how come when i vibrato the note cuts out after only like 3 seconds, how do u get your guitar to scream ??

  • @SensiRootsBoy

    same thing happens to me!

  • @SensiRootsBoy that would be called a pinch harmonic :)

  • Nice lesson,I'm still trying to learn guitar,so this is a great tip.thanks Justin

  • though i hate ur name...i like ur tutorial men!!!XD

  • good lesson!

  • talk less do more...

  • fingers dont have muscles. X)

  • @Raziel236

    Your joking, right?

  • @lemonfall No..they dont...

  • his talk less....

  • @Raziel236

    your an idiot

  • @Rush1013 Your fingers have tendons which are moved by the muscles in your hand and forearm. *You're an idiot.

  • @cizzin

There ARE muscles in the fingers. Let's call the finger the part where there's the distal, intermediate, and proximal phalanges (ie the three parts of the finger; thumb has 2). There are the extrinsic and intrinsic interossei muscles as well as the lumbricals (can't make the Star Trek sign w/o the lumbrical) All these muscles have attachment points within the phalanges only (ie not connected to the bones of the hand.). So now that makes you a grammar nazi and an idiot. Roflcopter.

  • @Rush1013 You might want to take a closer look at the wikipedia article you copy/pasted from. The encrypted medical bullshit you pasted connect within the phalanges, but are not actually INSIDE of the phalanges.

  • @cizzin

haha touche, i have absolutely no idea what the fuck a phalanges is.

  • ha, i came here to see if i do it wrong to prevent injuries, but it seems that i've done it right all along :D first time that happened, usually i get into bad habits, realize i'm doing it wrong and end up frustrated or injured.

  • The first technique is how you use vibrato on a violin, which is my primary instrument, and when i started using it on guitar everyone said i was doing it wrong :/ Obviously i wasn't :P

  • That must be one happy guitar

  • i actually use it quite a bit in blues

  • I feel that you learn a good vibrato by feeling it not by practicing vibrato on each string 30 minutes a day. Basically the moment i took up my guitar i started to vibrato it naturally. I use alot of the first one you showed here cuz i was a violin player.

  • Hey Justin, i like your lessons, because you aren't like many other "teachers" who are much too fast and who are expecting too much from the "Pupil"

  • Hm never thought of vibrating that way. I need to start doing it. I think it make it easier to play in tune

  • This is very clear! I've been using my fingers way too much. 8(

  • @Kjelldon whoahh!lmao

  • thanks for the lesson im really tying to perfect my vibrato but im useing 12's so its super hard.

  • i don't understand the second one...

  • he jackeed the guitar off

  • I never got around to learning vibrato on the acoustic, but now I really think it's useful for me (the more 'colors' the more variation possible). Thanks J!

  • Wow. I'm not a total newbie to guitar. Been playing many years, but I never took longtime, serious lesson.s Mostly self-taught.

I'm trying (& frustrated) but This technique is So tough for me! But I *wanna* learn it. The rolling of the finger thing is hard. I can easily get a nice vibrato by moving my finger(s) up & down, but this side to side thing is killing me.

    What AM I doing wrong??

  • @Syrinx77 youve probly been taught wrong. but anyway, you want to shake your wrist but leave your finger still

  • Thanks for this great lesson, i´m learning classicla and electric guitar and it was very, very helpful

  • this dude is the man

  • THIS is Not for minors!!!!

  • OMG. im used to moving my fingers nstead of my hand when doing vibrato.

  • This and tremolo picking were one of those natural techniques that I can do on my first try =)

  • whats really is hard is "wiggling" that note once you've bent the string up! :O ugh that parts hard

  • vibrato the hardest techniue ever :O

  • @HellFire2034 tht pinch harmonix XP

  • Hello Justin,

I like the way you teach, just one question: What kind of telecaster are you playing, I really like it

    Thanks, Dave

  • @Daver869 Hmm I don't know too much about Telecasters, but that looks like the Hot Rod Telecaster, but it's modified with a 3rd pickup

  • Very useful information! More teachers should emphasize the imprtance of this technique. Nicely done!

  • what if im playing a riff where my palm isnt on the back of the neck? do i have to practice changing my hand position to put my palm on the neck for every bend that i do? or is it ok to soley use your finger muscles to bend?

  • never use finger muscles for vibrato.all movement comes from the wrist,no matter where your palm is...

  • Wtf is up with that animal near the end? xD

  • I never had that much trouble with vibrato as a beginner. I am 23 now and I have played for 13 years, but both bending and classical vibrato came naturally to me.

  • why do you have 4 thumbs down

  • @humpdefunk

Because the vast majority of viewers on YouTube or any other site on the internet are illiterate and if they are... "literate", they lack reading comprehension skills.

You, however, do not lack these things and for that I appreciate it.

  • can i ask you the same question as below "how do you stop the other strings from ringing"

  • Just work on positioning your fingers so that they are either not touching the other strings or muting them, and if all else fails palm mute lol.

  • @murkhabalak palm mute with the picking hand ..

  • hello justin - question, when i use vibrato - how do i stop the other strings from ringing?

  • @thesacrament77 palm mute with the picking hand

  • как же он много пиздит....*кипит*

  • i call the first one 'the mastrubrato'

  • Your lessons are the best on the net.. and it's FREE

  • Another great lesson. Thanks

  • Damn, compresor is killing me.

  • We need a " How To Solo With Your Teeth Lesson " Lol

  • You have light strings on that Tele don't you Justin. 9's?

  • thanx dude. i thought that u were supposed to go up and down with it. its much easier this way!

  • This is a different type of vibrato.. Used on classical guitars, and in bluesy music. Clearly you don't listen very well do you?

  • Oh my GOD! HE'S EXPLAINING IT ON A TELECASTER... It's called COMMON SENSE DUDE.. He's not going to take out a different guitar every fucking time to show how to do a vibrato.

  • changing the pitch of a note in a rhythmic way = vibrato.

    you're welcome.

  • youve got a gift for teaching music ive never not learnt from your lessons!

  • heart shape box nirvana? hell yeah i love you just kidding about the love

  • ADA

    MP1

    Hallelujah.

  • Ok ..What difference in terms of sound does it make if you use your fingers instead of hand to ? I Used the fingers and moved the strings in semi circular motion and manged to get it sound like i was moving my hand...SO did I do it wrong ?

  • If you manage to get the sound right, then there won't be any difference in sound.

BUT try to work with the thicker strings with fingers only. I guarantee your fingers will be sore long before you can do a nice tone bend. You just make yourself work harder and lose speed and efficiency.

  • where is 2/2?

  • you hit the nail right on the head for me. I tried to get the vibrato going with my fingers alone, and not my hand. very useful info. Thanks, Justin!

  • check out the guy with Back this Way .. his vibratos are beautiful .. i really liked his solo on "anytime" .. really like Danny Kirwan

  • Classic: Somewhat worked

    Standard: What

  • This was really helpful to me, I've been trying to do it the wrong way! Thanks so much Justin.

  • Very useful lesson to me :D By the way: rust strings xD

  • While I understand the mechanics of this, I get unwanted sound from nearby strings when my fingers touch them. How do I get rid of that sound?

  • While I understand the mechanics of this, I find that I get sound from the nearby strings when my fingers touch them. How do I get rid of that sound?

  • raise your finger a bit more so it mutes the next string

  • i luv vidrato it's my favourtie trick

  • my favourite is the whammy bar and whammy pedal xD

  • You're great Justin!!!! I'm Italian and sometimes ( hardly never ) I don't understand what you talk about, but I learned by you how to play many songs..Thanks!!!

  • good stuff but imo way too much talking... i mean there are some vids where plp just show you stuff without explaining anything and that's too bad. this is much better but could be cut like in half...

  • 9:47 wtf?

  • wombat

  • oohh

  • thanks for the vid!!!really helped!well accept for the strange creature at the end of it!what the hell is it???

  • a tanzmanian devil

  • coolio

it looks like a big rat!

    not like taz!!!

  • Angus Young has the best vibrato ever.

  • Ya thats something i really like about his style lol

  • Check out Paul Kossoff (Free), I may be bashed now, but I think, Paul had an even better vibrato, but Angus is wonderful, no question

  • Angus did have wonderful vibrato, however he was influenced a LOT by Paul Kossoff :)

  • u have my mac!

  • nice gear in the back, dude!

  • justin rocks...very nice lesson justin as always!.......

  • wow i've been bending wrong the whole time =/

  • Top teaching as usual by Justin.

    Great lesson.

  • Thanks for the lesson! Vibrato is something I always struggled with and now it makes more sense.

  • great vid as always justin! i started playing guitar about 2 years ago and if it wasn't for you i would'nt be as good as i am now. not that i am that good but.. u now what i mean.. :)

now i finally have some spare money to donate. well it is way less than you deserve but i just can't afford more at this point. keep up the good work. on behalf of all ppl who watch your vids i wanna thank you. you're the man justin..

    greetings from germany

    flo

  • there are no muscles in ur fingers only tendants

ur fingers movement comes from you forearm!

  • wow! i've never seen first vibrato before...

    thanks J!

  • Awesome stuff

  • thats so crazy

that first vibrato i did like naturally

i thought it wasnt a real vibrato but it apparently is
