  • Captain Pellew was growling his words and clearly seething, and yet he didn't want the Spanish captain to think he was angry...Psst, Sir Edward, the guy is standing right in front of you.

  • does anyone else think he sounds sooo posh on that first line?

  • yes alright alright i think we've quite established our friend the duke's eminence

  • Does anyone else find the sight of a ship going down extremely sad?

  • "You tell him, sir…'Damned if I'll let him see he's made me angry"

"Get him over the side, with dignity."

I do very much like the character of Sir Edward. And how much each of us who are endowed with high potential and even higher aspirations needs one to keep us along the right path.

  • yay!!! i finally got to see this!!! i tried to get it on a site that has shows that you may have missed, but that took like 20 mins to load and it only got to play for THREE MINUTES until it froze.... thanks funnyflyingdutchgirl!!!! :)

  • Salt Beef anyone? :-)

  • they should have done an Episode where Sharpe and HORNBLOWER meet

  • ouch! belly flops at 5:48

  • I can't believe there aren't more films covering this era. I have all the Hornblower films on DVD, all the Sharpe films on Blu-ray, Master and Commander 2 disc special edition DVD, Waterloo (1970) on DVD....but after that I am struggling to find Napoleonic era TV or movies. Any recommendations?

  • @GhibliFan1 dude i was saying that exact shit the other day i completely agree

  • @GhibliFan1 There's The Charge of The Light Brigade (the 1960s version) which is the Crimean war but I really like it, and also a film called The Duellists which is pretty good. But you're right, there should be more.

  • don't know about that

    i like hornblower

and i aso like sharpe as well

there should be a hornblower movie from the 1950 as well

  • Where is that ship?

  • @Tantrumzero I have read somewhere that it is a

Turkish replica off one of their warships from the

    1700s.

  • thank you very much for your kind sharing

  • thank you so much for posting, because we have non of these series in Germany

  • I'll never thank you enough for uploading this wonderful series. I really loved it when it aired on tv... thank you thank you thank you! =)))

  • Since when did Hornblower learn French, or was he faking it during the Duel?

  • @baroquemusician1 in the books he learned french as wel as spanish

  • vote up if your a fan of Ioan Gruffudd! :D

  • lets hope they can get together one day and film the last few episodes

  • @T1carus I know you put this up a year ago T1. Are you speaking of the last of the book? Ioan is trying to get the series started again. Makes sense that as Hornblower progressed in rank there still would be material. Someone did say that the best part of the books had been done when they did these episodes. I haven't read the books but it does make sense that unless Hornblower is commanding a ship he'd probably not be as interesting BUT a clever writer could do it! I have faith. :) Songs

  • Actually this is much better than Sharpe...

The story is more tightly knitted together, the acting (especially the fighting) is much more realistic, the accents are real... and as for the cordiality, that was normal in the 1800's...

so in short they're both good but hornblowre has to come out on top

  • @montypython11111 the accents weren't real on sharpe?

  • @Asasello333 Sort of. But in the books Sharpe was from London and not Yorkshire.

  • It's not all rum, bum and consertina!

  • lol nice bald patch at 5:33

  • @kieghacat amen to that friar!

  • Comment removed

  • I'm a huge fan of the Sharpe series, and I've been told that if you like Sharpe, you'll like Hornblower.....so should I order the box set?

  • yer mate i did, its not as good as Sharpe but its still brilliant i liked it alot

  • it is sharpe with a posh accent and some gay manners, but he gets away with it.

  • .. In the naavyy!

  • Definatly (and maybe they will manage to get funds to make the final episodes)

  • I actually did.....well, I got my brother and sister in law to buy it me for Xmas. I'm loving them. I've watched 5 and only have 3 left now :( I'd give A&E the money to finish the series, in line with the number of books, if I had it to give. Yes, I found it THAT good.

    Thanks!

  • get him over the side....with dignity

    lol

  • Wow, when I heard the theme song my heart just LEAPT! It's been a loooong time since I've seen this. Good stuff.

  • thanks for these :)

  • that's some top quality acting there at 7.13

    HAH!

  • thank you for uploading these

  • 4:44

    the captains exchange stares

    LOL!!

  • Good boy, Horatio! Lovely French and perfect exectution of the present subjunctive . . . :)

And I LOVE the growling snarls from Pellew :D Very funny!

  • mon Dieu, les Anglais....

  • Mon Dieu, les Néerlandais....

  • does anyone actual know what Hornblower said??

  • The Captain would be honored to offer you a glass of wine in the captains' quarters blah blah blah and more pleasantries and so on

  • he said the captain regrets what keeps them apart and he hopes to keep being personal friends, no matter the relation of their countries

  • Holy shit?! Denis Lawson was Wedge in Star Wars AND was Ewan McGregor's Uncle?! LOL I never knew!

  • Yep :)

  • I love the outfits of this period, people really had a sense of style.

  • and the sense of honour

  • @BVargas78 Nah, I like the outfits in WW1 better

  • @BVargas78 They sure DID and it should return

  • spanish look hectic.

  • Thanks funnyflyingdutchgirl! Of moet ik bedankt zeggen? =P

  • What you want ^__^!

  • that may well be the case but im sure your grandfather would'nt want you namedropping , and even if he isnt, don't you think your real grandfather would be heartbroken to hear you say these things

  • im glad my great grampa wrote the books the movies aren't as good as the books tho

  • suuuuure he did

  • im not kidding C.S forester is my great grandpa im his great grand son chris forester

  • Denis Lawson--Red Two standing by!

  • This episode is one of the best in the whole serie.

    LOVE HORNBLOWER! <3

  • The examination for lieutenant and this one are in my opinion the best.

  • I actually ment this one and the duel are in my opinion the best.

  • haha yes I understand:) yes, the duel is good, but I think "the duchess and the devil" is one of the best, because it is there horiatio find archie again and you really see their friendship

  • The thing i like about the examination for lieutenant and the duel more then the froggs and lobsters and the duchess and the devil, is that there are more scenes at sea. But i have to admit, the duchess and the devil shows the bond between archie and horatio better than all the others and it does have a nice fighting scene at the begin.

  • fken awsome. thanks dutchy

  • That's odd; didn't Horatio not understand the Frenchmen in the last episode? Yet it appears he speaks fluent French in this.

    No matter. Great show.

  • I think he was pretending not to understand, because if you watch, after the french captain takes command of the er--dingy, and Horatio and his men are rowing, he relays to his men what the French are saying.

  • no he understood it but was prententing not to to trick the french into believeing that no one know what was going to happen, french in the books is one of hornblowers best langages since he learned it as a boy and he becomes v good at spanish as well cos he is imprisioned latter

  • Why would they call you geek for watching this?!?!? I think it's brilliant!

  • die

  • in helping you relate to complete tossers, no doubt.

  • fav episode :) never gets old when the dreadnought foster and that irish captain arguing :D

  • that is captain hammond and if u think about it optimistically, hammond challenges foster to a duel at the end of the episode, and think he killed foster because he shows up in later episodes

  • i got called a geek recently for watching hornblower, but it's fucking ace! you can't go wrong with it

  • The same thing happened to me! lol.

  • hehe... it's Wedge!!

  • And he's badass, of course!

  • Holy-.. It is! I would never have noticed! Thanks a bunch!

  • you do know that denis lawson (wedge) is ewan Mc gregors uncle

  • I did know that... since I am a HUGE star wars nut - which is why I mentioned Wedge :-)

  • Thanks so much for posting these!
