I wish EMI would release the Sawallisch Ring on DVD. I have it on CD and the conducting, singers and orchestra are great. But this production looks much watchable than the otherwise excellent Barenboim set in Bayreuth. I think this Ring was only on Laserdisc a long time ago.

I completely agree. While the sets are sometimes modern, the designers don't contradict Wagner's story. And this production doesn't try to force simplistic interpretations on the audience or nonsense like prostitutes or drunk party girls.
The pace of the conducting by Sawallisch also doesn't drag like Levine's traditional Met DVD. Sawallisch's performance would be the one to get if it was on DVD.
I happened to watch Das Rheingold for the first time tonight (on DVD - Boulez) and was intensely moved by Ortrun Wenkel's Erda, so much so that I've turned to YouTube to hear others in the role.
I have been to 23 Ring cycles. This (your's) is an eccentric opinion, not only contrary to my own opinion but to those of my acquaintence who have attended three times the number of Ring cycles that I have. I have not heard it expressed in serious musical circles, at least to the extent that I've had the privilege to be involved. However, Hanna Schwarz is, I agree, terrific.
The Ring Cycle is probably the most symbolic and timeless peace of art in the western culture, period - a true masterpiece by Wagner. By the same token it can be rendered in as many ways as possible and as long as it is effective and with good taste it will be still great. It depends who directs, conducts, sings, stages/customs that will bring out the real peice. It won't be easy to ruin this work and it has nothing to do with the country. I have seen Euro Opera productions that were very bad.
"Wotan be careful!!" "SHE should have been careful! giving birth to such a lot of Wotan's daughters!!" Quote Anna Russell on this Tube and DVD First Farewell Concert telling the Ring story. The best Wagner-cure ever. Yes, I'm prejudiced: I really am........ and he deserves it!!
she doen't look like an earth goddess--looks like she ran into a lingerie dept by mistake. What would Wagner think/say??? C'mon Bayreuth!
