What does it say about Verizon's marketing team that they have to use a commercial from the 80s to try and get through people? Commercials used to be so much better! Case and point: this video!
It kind of hates me hate Verizon. Instead of wanting to switch over to their company, I suddenly find myself craving cinnamon gum! So much for that little plan...
I won't go so far as to say that commercials were better then, as that could totally be nostalgia talking. What I can say though is it was brilliant marketing on part of Verizon. Not only did they reuse a jingle that had a built-in familiarity with an audience, but the tongue-in-cheek nature of the ad has allowed it to get replay on youtube and mentions of it all over the internet. The fact that Verizon's ad is getting blogged about and commented on is noteworthy.
People who complain about Verizon's PARODY ad were obviously born after the mid-80s and didn't grow up with this stuff. I found it EXTREMELY funny! Wait a few more years, and then the 90s will be parodized...Spice Girls anyone?
Wow. While watching the new family guy this week, I noticed a parody of this jingle, and had to look it up. I was shocked to find out ( having been born in 1981 ) that I remembered this video advert so vividly.
OMG... I am so blowed and decided to look this up, 4 real... I thought of it out of nowhere... I would not have believed it was here but, am tripped CLEAN OUT that it is...LMFAO, I was looking for the one with the girl and the guy on the ferris wheel though...
Wow!! I cant believe these commercials have not been shown on television since 97 or 98??? It seems like just yesterday.. I will always have this catchy tune in my head. How come they dont make commercials anymore with the great catchy tunes?? It is the only way I remember the commercials no matter how tacky they are.
So classic! I swear, the 80's commercials were the last of the really great commercials! They all had MUSIC, which was so uplifting! And music helps contribute to a better society.
It was only a quarter actually all the way until around 2002 or so. Still, it's only 30 cents, which is slower than inflation in the 20-25 years that have passed.
Sigh

That is indeed Peter "Ralphie" Billingsley as the band geek, as well as Vito Scotti as the sculptor.

No little cinnamon gum freshens breath longer than Big Red.
So kiss a little longer,
stay close a little longer,
pull tight a little longer.
Longer with Big Red.
That Big Red freshness lasts right through it.
Your fresh breath goes on and on while you chew it.
Say goodbye a little longer;
make it last a little longer.
Give your breath long lasting freshness with Big Red
