I don't know what type of water heater you have but if it is electric, you may not have enough with that generator.I have one that is hard wired into my panel rated for 7500 surge. It handles the well pump, boiler,lighting,microwave and two refrigerators. My hot water comes from the boiler. Good luck.
Call a local electrician. I paid around $500 and got a custom transfer panel setup and a 25ft cable made. Best investment. No go in wrol because of sound but good otherwise. Also get a Kill-a-Watt to measure the current from your devices. Helps a lot when deciding what you can and can't plug in.
@midwestiowashooter Thanks for the tips! Alas, $500 would be a little too steep for me right now. I'm probably going to have to crunch the numbers myself and cross my fingers. ;) In reality, I will probably be enlisting the help of some friends with a little more knowhow than myself...
