anyway. This video isn't for bragging. when this was posted, good SSD's were rare and EXPENCIVE. Nowadays it's a completely a different matter. The video shows windows 7 on ssd before windows 7 was released. And it shows that old laptops gets new life with SSD. THAT'S THE POINT.
mugshotfun: no shit, sherlock? This is an old laptop with dual core and intel gen 1 and BETA OS. what did u expect? At work i'm running a dual xeon 4core setup (thats 16 logical cores with HT) and intel gen2 + 510 series and 16GB ddr3..... if it's a turf war you want ;).
I just dropped an 80gb Intel SSD into my HTPC and i was pretty damn impressed. the first time windows 7 rebooted after the initial install the little colors didn't even have time to come together in the middle. Now it takes about the same time (little less but not much) than this PC to get to the desktop now that i've got everything installed. I'm extremely happy with it. The next gen drives need to hurry the hell and come out. And be less expensive. lol
Actually, you're both mistaken. Whether it's core i7, core 2 dual, or pentium III doesn't matter much when it comes to booting speed. Any old processor can handle the load. The fact that n0gar's HDD boots faster probably means he has a different OS with less programs starting up. That's all there is to it.
That laptop does not have that slow of a processor .. maybe as slow as a 2.2GHZ Core 2 duo Santa Rosa setup, but hey, the only chipset faster is Penryn, but not by much with the same clockspeed. The new high end i7's are a different story, but the i7 CPU and chipset are only used in big & heavy laptops.
Basically what I am staying is that the D630 is still a 'almost-current' laptop as far as X86 performance is concerned.
An "old" computer WILL get a magnificent performance boost with a properly installed (alligned) SSD!
The HDD is and has always been the biggest bottleneck in computers, and therefore SSD's will make a old compuer WAY faster. I bet my "old" laptop beats your new one in regular usage!
And by the way.... you must be really slow. You've watched the video, you see how fast this "old" laptop is booting, AND STILL YOU WONDER WHAT THE POINT IS???! Damn you must be stupid.
@lordofthespoons123 I have to agree that you must be a freakin' flaming moron to ask a question like this. First, the D630 is an excellent machine...very configurable...handles up to 8gb RAM, PCMCIA (for more USB's, for instance I have 6 total), fire-wire, can accommodate TWO internal hard drives, and bluetooth, SIM capability, smart card, and more. Second, any hard drive that you put into a computer can also be taken out and used in other computers.
according to an article I read, doing so would not really save any time. They use a special process that allows the animation to occur without wasting really any bootup time.
Yes! If you look at that video of 4x Kingston X25-E SSDs booting up,, it pauses at the flower animation! I would like to see this with the "No GUI boot" option enabled in msconfig too.. Don't know why Microsoft is forcing us to watch that animation if it has to halt the boot up process to do so

I have a couple d630's (company didn't want them anymore) and you may have just breathed new life into them! (and sold me on SSD's at the same time)
really awesome!

I thought SSDs were faster than HDDs ... I have Windows 7 as well and it starts pretty much at the same speed.

Why would you put such a crappy OS on such a good laptop?

Why would you put such an expensive ssd in such an old laptop?

Hell I put one in a P4 system my grandparents use.
Reason being it speed their system up quite a bit...about 2-3 times just opening Firefox for them.
Its a great way to get the "email" PC responsive.

@lordofthespoons123 because why not? it obviously gave it quite a performance boost.

GAHHH....
Listening to music while filming your pc booting is apparently not so popular with the music industry.
Getting copyright comments for this is just too --beeeeeep-- stupid! Universal music group can suck them selves.
johnkristian 2 years ago
unfortunately, things have really gotten out of hand with copyright crap.
soon, we won't even be allowed to record anything at all without some crazy license lest you want to be hit with a billion dollar lawsuit.
