He's in the electric chair throughout the whole movie, executed & dying; the moment in the cell & when he changes into Pete, & the moment at the end when he burns up in the car in the police chase. Aways trying to escape his reality by imaging a new character/story/reality but always being dragged back to the beginning of his reality - he killed his wife & 'Dick Laurent is dead". His ego refuses to die and keeps trying to invent a new 'reality' but he can never that hell.
