  • Hi Dan, Today at the vets I found out that my dog has Diabetes. I still have to get his urine tested to see what type it is but I wanted to ask you. My dog is 11 going on 12 hes a Jack Russell mixed(small guy). My question is what type of cut of meat is best to start him off with, and because off his age what would be a good portion to give him?

  • @Falconmasterson Hi, first off you need to know his condition and if he's going to need insulin meds. It's sad to think his diet got him to this state but if the diabetes is not too bad you can fix him pretty quickly, certainly within the next six months.

Start by dropping present diet and I mean dropping (as in the trash) all kibble/canned food, it's poison!

Types of meat: chicken to start (leg, thigh, back etc) then move onto lamb breast, pork belly, trotter etc. TBC.

  • @danscott888 ... Try out what you can find from your local butcher or other meat producer. Also locate raw green tripe (it's awesome for healing this condition) on the internet may turn up some suppliers (frozen boxed delivery).

The good thing is he's small and food costs are minimal. Feed large portions so he has to break it down, great for cleaning teeth too.

Think raw meat on the bone (he needs both meat & bone). One main meal a day. TBC.

  • @danscott888 ... if he's a finnicky starter, starve him for a day and he'll be eager to eat. Remember if he is on insulin shots to test and adjust the shots as you go through the new diet and dont worry about BUN levels being high on this diet, thats normal. Any more help, talk privately on my channel.

    All the best.

  • ty for this info. i just noticed this past week my chug= chihuahua/pug is now asking to get off the bed, i think she cant see good anymore to jump like she always had, also i know shes going on a diet starting now......ty for this video......id hate to lose her, shes only 9 yrs old......p.s she also every night wakes up panting hard and fast for about a minute, looking dazzed, but then comes to and want's to be held.....ty poohshere37

  • @poohshere37 Hi, yes she's slowing down as a result of her diet and the degenerating effects it's had on her body through her life. Her bones maybe becoming more brittle with the re-inforcing fiber collagen being stripped out by her present diet which explains wanting to be let down from the bed.

At this stage it has become critical she switches to a clean healthy natural diet based around raw meats on the bone. This will fix most of her complaints very quickly.

  • @poohshere37 PS, check my blog for further information and ask questions, i'm here here for dogs always.

  • Thank You so much ! I have had such a time with My precious Pug Sydney , your video's are so great ! I thank You and Am so grateful ... :)

  • @Maiyaee Hi, thankyou for dropping by and commenting, I'm pleased you found value in what I had to say. When dog owners finally "get it" with their dogs nutritional needs and their dog can now finally get the good stuff and recover from illness caused by commercial dog food or just get onto a diet that is in line with their biology, I feel all the effort has been worth it.

Dogs deserve a raw based diet, it's what their bodies crave for real health and vitality.

  • our 7 year old Lab has been eating raw since we got her at 8 weeks, but since she had puppies a year ago she is extra hungry - she weighs the same as she did pre-pups, but her thyroid tests slightly low...do you have any recomendations to ward off future thyroid problems?

  • @BellasLabPuppies Hi, I'm presuming she is following the exact same daily routine as a year ago? Being the same weight is a good thing. Is her heart rate the same as a year ago and was thyroid tested b4? The vast majority of dogs seen by vets eat a commercial food diet & measure stats criteria by those perameters. Example- blood protein levels in raw fed dogs are generally higher (normal) leading to an incorrect diagnosis by vets. If her diets balanced and behavior is normal it's little concern.

  • i recently foundout that my dog has Ketoacidosis Diabetes.. the vet wants me to hospitalize him for a week, then give him insulin shots twice a day for the rest of his life. i've been hearing alot about the BARF diet, but im not sure if that is good fr him, given his condition. he is a chiuaua-mix and his age is unknown since i adopted him from the humane society... can you please let me know if the BARF diet is something i should do? are there any at home redemies that witll work?

  • @nickyejay09 Hi Nicky, Ok first up what I say is for education purposes only and does not constitute professional advice... I'm a canine nutritionist not an animal doctor.

Your dog is in it's present condition most likely because of diet, he simply could not produce enough digestive enzymes from the pancreas to process the kibble or canned commercial dog food which contains none (natural dog food contains enzymes). (see nxt post)

  • @nickyejay09 (Read second) And this led to a situation where insulin was not being produced in enough quantities to regulate blood sugar levels. Happens all the time to dogs on inferior diets only yours has probably gone un noticed leading to the present condition. My advice for your dog to have any chance at all is with diet change to a raw food diet (not BARF)-unecessary and complicated. 1-get my book and start, doghealthsecret(dot)com it's $27 and you download it.

    (see nxt post)

  • @nickyejay09 (Read third) 2-You must implement diet change in combination with your veterinary treatment plan to monitor insulin level adjustment as raw food acts as it's own medicine correcting imbalances which means careful monitoring of insulin level adjustments each week-important. I dont know the medical history and other possible medical conditions your dog has but diet is key at any stage especially if your dog is still young. The vet may challenge the diet but persivere. Keep me posted.
