  • i really like all your vidio thanks alot . may i ask you prepare avidio showing how to make agrany sweater with buttons for 10 years old girl

  • Hi Mikey, love your videos, I'm in Norway, bought my bernat mosiac off Ebay, great stuff, although when I'm trying to make my first round of 16 it gets quite bunched and trying to edge it apart, the yarn gets fuzzy and sometimes breaks. Is this common? Is there a trick to it? This yarn is getting far too expensive to work with my mistakes! Grrr! Thanks :)

  • @lookirl this yarn is made in a way that is does have flaws....you will find that some parts are thinner while other parts of the yarn are thicker ....this is normal.... it does tend to break if pulled on so cut instead of pulling knots out ect....I found it easier to work with once I used it for a while and got use to it...try to be patient with it...it will pay off in the end ....it is a beautiful yarn

    cathy@ the crochet crowd helpdesk:)

  • love the colors in this yarn not crazy about the texture.....kinda like cotton feel not soft or warm....but may be warm once all 128 Squares are made. The colors are fab......do you have a link to written pattern?

  • I love your videos Michael!! You are such a good teacher! I found your tutorials very helpful. I love how you call the row "the runway." Do you have a facebook fan page? I am just starting this granny square patchwork blanket, but I am using plain colors, I should really get the yarn you are using, it turned out great!! :)

  • hey mikey, did you make a video on how you attached these squares as well? I have seen a few of the videos of attaching but they leave a rather big ridge between the squares and I do not want that.

  • @orlie512 if you search "how to attach granny square mikeyssmail" on youtube mikey has a few tutorials on how to attach the grannies just pick the one that you like best for your project....cathy@mikeys helpdesk ;)

  • Love love love this yarn and need to find it.

  • I just made my first granny square for my blanket!!!Thanks for teaching us how to do this!!

  • I LOVE the colors of this blanket. They include all my favs.I will be looking for this yarn and make my new daughter a blanket she can pass on to her own children. Now just to find the yarn LOL

  • I prob drove 30 miles today looking for a store that sold this yarn :( Anyone have any ideas? I tried Michaels, JoAnne Fabrics, and Walmart.

  • I ordered mine from knitting warehouse- it was $4.79 a skein- which is pretty good compared to what everyone else was charging. I just googled it and found the best price.

  • Wow that was quick! Thanks Mikey

Am I right thinking that when you say skein it means a ball? These slight differences in can be so confusing can't they?

When we talk of a skein here it means an unwound amount of yarn, one big loop so you need a helper to hold the yarn on their hands whilst you roll it into a ball.

Anyway thanks for the help, I can now order the yarn and make a start on my squares!

  • I love this pattern. I live in the UK and have found an online shop that sells Bernat Mosaic Yarn. It is sold in 100 gram balls. Can you tell me how many grams are in a skein please? I'm not sure how many balls of yarn I should buy?

    thanks

  • @PERRY5711 They are only available in 100 grams... 14 is needed to do the complete afghan as I demonstrated in another video. :) One ball gets you 12 squares... You need 128 squares and then yarn for attaching and then once around the perimeter. That = 14 in total

  • It s also possible to buy simple white yarn and dye it, time consuming but maybe cheaper and more creative, i wonder..

  • @majawow Remember the average yarn cannot be dyed because it's already been processed... I find dyeable yarn to be expensive... the time spent and the money spent on yarn may be far higher than you expect. Good thought pattern though. :)

  • i looked on the internet and the yarn for this project is almost 6. per skien do u know of a cheaper yarn that changes colors as slowly as this one?

  • @lsfontenot yeah sounds about right. There are cheaper version but they don't change as slowly. James C Brett has nice yarn too but it's more expensive. It works out to be about $30 dollars more per afghan to construct this blanket but to me, if I am going to spend 20 - 30 hours on an afghan, I want the final look to be amazing. You might as well if you are going to go through the motion. I have made too many afghans where I went cheap and regretted it afterward.

  • what is the name of the yearn used and is it 14 skiens of the exact same batch

  • @lsfontenot Medusa by Bernat Mosaic Yarn. All skiens are the same. The colours are changing colour so slowly that each square looks unique.

  • would this be 11-12 skiens of each color?

  • @lsfontenot No... the yarn is doing the work and changing colours as you do it... For my full afghan I used a total of 14 skiens and though each square looks different due to the colours, it's kind of the trick with that yarn.

    :) Michael

  • Such a beautiful patten and a great afghan!

  • i just subscribed yesterday and im already making this :)

  • Is there an actual pattern for this afghan that I can print and keep in my collection of patterns? I LOVE this afghan but cannot make it right now and want to save it for later. And this Bernat yarn is beautuful!

  • @7XaNana there is no written pattern at this time.....sorry..... cathy@ mikeys helpdesk

  • Do you have a tut on how to back an afghan with material so it looks professional? Oh and what are the inches of these squares?

  • @majasmagic there is no tutorial for this by mikey but if you need a visual you could search for some on youtube...if you put the right sides of the blanket and the fabric together and sew around the edge except for a big enough hole to push the blanket and fabric through to turn it right side out after sewing the edges...then you have to fold in the hole to make it like the rest of the edges and sewn it closed from the outside......hope thats not confusing!!!!! cathy@ mikeys helpdesk :)

  • @majasmagic not sure about the measurements on the squares but i believe he went around 4 time to make them :) cathy

  • i agree with your one chain vs two chains between your three dc on the square rows.

  • You make YOUR (key word, YOUR) afghan the way YOU want too. And how many squares are required for this? This is gonna be my next big project.

  • Hello, Mickey, I was wondering if you have a viedo on how to make a Prayer Shawl for a beginner, I hope you do because the one's I found, doesn't help me learn. Thank You for your time you are helping me and my 8 year old daughter and 5 year old son learn this wonderful art.

  • To the woman that was aguring with you, my sister does not even chain one inbetween her three double crochets and although it don't look like yours it works fine. I think your way Micheal is best. I love granny squares and could make them until the cows come home. Lovely yarn.

  • I found this yarn in the store and it is sooooo thin, couldn't believe it is classified as a "4". Seems like a baby fine thread. I ended up putting it back because I am thinking that it won't make a nice weight afghan. Are you planning on putting some kind of material backing on it maybe to give it some weight? Could use 2 strings together but that would end up costing a fortune. Thoughts? Thanks. Tracy

  • @Chrismoch1 heres an idea if you want to close up the holes more you could always try using a smaller hook but then your squares would be smaller may take a few more rounds on the square to get it the sz you want.....cathy@mikeys helpdesk....

  • @Chrismoch1 Maybe you could crochet two yarns together -- one being this kind (the color changing kind Mikey is using) and the other being a solid neutral color, maybe like white? You'd still get the slow pretty color changes, they would just be tempered by the solid color, but the weight would be heavier. (you may have to use a larger size hook to accommodate both yarns.) Hope this helps!

  • love this!

  • Great tip on the bowl! I do granny squares slightly different; however, this method makes a prettier result. What a great concept! I also made a super star blanket from your tutorial. I am so grateful for your passion for what you do. Thank you! Keep up the good work! I will be watching for new ideas! :P

  • Hi Mikey,

I love this. You can get a colorful afghan without having to stop and change yarn!!! It's a great Fall project! What method are you going to do to join them together? I'm looking for the EASIEST way.

    Thanks.

    Tracy

  • I love this yarn! I am going to have to order it because I can not find it in my stores. How many balls of yarn will it take to complete 127 granny squares???? Thanks!

  • @caribeth1180 hey mikey posted on FB that he hadn't finished yet but gave an estimate of 11-12 skiens to complete his blanket....hope that helps cathy @mikeys helpdesk... :)

  • I still have no clue as to how to make a granny square. It seems so simple but I don't get it. I'd love to make a granny square blanket someday. But I need a live tutorial.

  • @BlazinRedxDragon hello...if you look on youtube and search granny square mikeyssmail the tutorial for a granny square will pop up........hope this helps....let me know if you need anymore help.... :) cathy @ mikeys helpdesk

  • I would like to adopt you, can you believe ?.... I'm joking, but I follow a lot even though I do not understand almost nothing of what you say, do not speak English and no other language than Italian .... (Thanks to google translator for help)

  • Eastern Canadian's usually say "oot" "aboot" and "aGAIN". I have been watching hockey so long that people tell me I say those words that way now!!

GO CANADA!! Love your tutorials more than any other crochet ones on youtube.

You rock Mikey! GO RED WINGS!! Woohoooooooooo

  • what size hook are you using? I LOVE this slow color change for the reason you said on the other video.... looks like a circus exploded on your head the way the other yarns change color too fast! HA I cant wait to see your book! When will it be out?? P.S. I like listening to the way you say OUT : )

  • @kurtsgirl2002 I believe he mentioned it was an H hook in the beginning :)

  • Thanks for sharing your pattern. It looks great. I've made hundreds of traditional granny squares and I always put one chin between each cluster and 2 chains on the corner. I agree with you that putting 2 chanins makes it too sloppy and the hole to big. When I get doen with a sq I leave the tail long enough to sew the sq together into coulms and then a longer peice of yarn to sew colums together. less worry about weaving in tails. Can't wait to see your end result.

  • Just made 1 square and very easy to make. Where can I purchase the brand of yarn your using in the video?

  • @laura2norton sometimes local craft stores may carry it but if that is not the case in your area you can go to bernat.com and order some there the name of the yarn is mosaic and it comes in a few different colors.... this one shown in mikeys video is called psychedelic hope that helps....cathy @mikeys helpdesk :)

  • @mikeyssmail Thanks so much!

  • Very beautiful color.

  • Very nice and I will try this one myself!

  • This is a great video, n I will be trying it real soon.
