Never missed an episode of the early Police Story, and would get pissed if I couldn't get home to watch it (no VCR/TIVO etc. in those days). I liked the closing music and tried to copy it on the guitar, but the network narrator would usually yack about what was crap was coming on next while the music was playing. Police Story was so realistic for a TV show; only a cop like Wambaugh could do it... but the later episodes got hokey as hell and I had to quit watching it.
@vkoo32 Police woman was spinoff of police story so was swat and some other cop show with james wainwrite who was arrested for drugs in real life there was another show called police story that gene roddenberry wrote after paladin before star trek that didnt sell it wasnt an anthology like this a woman was one of the lead roles
Police Story can be seen on the RTV Network Mon-Fri Nights; i think they showing either the first or second season in order, i'm not sure(i think its the 2nd season).
@cozene35 Picked up my Season 1 set over the Christmas holidays and enjoying now. Disc 1 actually disappointed me, especially the weak and slow moving pilot movie. But I persevered and now almost done the whole set. Very good show.
FYI: In addition to the DVD release of Season 1 in September, Police Story has returned to the airwaves on the Retro Television Network (RTV) (as of June 28, 2011).
RTV has finally changed their line-up. Out goes Magnum, in comes Police Story. Tonight's episode had James Farentino and pals in some outrageous clothes. Color me hooked, baby!
I loved this show. Aside from science fiction shows, like the Twilight Zone, I believe Police Story was the first dramatic anthology series, where every episode featured a different story, setting, and cast. That made it unique and fun to watch. It should be made available on DVD.
Does anyone know if this is available on DVD? I have tried without success for many years to find 'Police Story" the entire collection on DVD. It was the best!! Thanks to anyone who repsonds...
@BushMass The only "Police Story" I know of is in Season One of "Police Woman" currently available on DVD from Sony Pictures Entertainment. There is only one episode.
I remember an episode where some rednecks mounted a Browning M2 .50 Cal in the back of a station wagon and shot up the ghetto... they don't make em like that anymore!
No logo? Reminds me of the early days of the Closing Logo Group where I'd hunt through VHS tapes where we cut the logo off before the end credits finished!
@Harry44Callahan2 It's also too bad the LAPD never allowed Wambaugh (who was an actual LAPD Policeman) to use real LAPD badges like they allowed Jack Webb (who was never an actual LAPD Policeman) to do.
@SheriffTankStoner is that true? perhaps it was that Wambaugh showed cops as real people( I have many of his book's ), and when Webb made Dragnet, they could only show cops as knights in shining armour.
@goatboyful I think the only time they ever showed a real LAPD badge in any Wambaugh production is during the opening credits of The New Centurions, after that all the cops wore badges similar to the badges the LAPD wore prior to switching over the world-famous 'City Hall in Oval' style badge
So this was the show that Police Woman came from?
No wonder why, b/c both Police Story and Police Woman had some catchy theme songs as wellas the same font for their closing credits and/or opening credits.
Police Story was the best TV series about crime reality. I used to watch it on my black & white TV on early 70's and every time I saw the end titles I tough to myself this episode was the best!(but aways looking for the next one).
I watched this on the A&E channel in the mid-90's and totally fell in love with it. Nothing comes close to gritty 70's crime drama shows. I love how there was always different characters each episode.
@bixbyglaser One question: is your nickname a mix of Bill Bixby (you know, Incredible Hulk, My Favorite Martian), and Paul M. Glaser (Starsky and Hutch), by any chance? Just curiousity !
@eurodishco It sure is. Those two were my favorite actors as a little kid, along with Clint Eastwood and Charles Bronson. They don't make shows like this anymore.
@bixbyglaser Hello! Thanks for clarifying your "nick". I also liked Bill Bixby and Paul Michael Glaser (whom I met once in Miami Beach -- in 1984 and I also met "Hutch" the same year -- long story. They were my idols too back in the 70s. On Saturdays, my dad, my brother and I used to go to the movies to see a Charles Bronson or C. Eastwood flick, if they were playing. Nice memories. And you are right, they do not make movies or television shows like those anymore. Now it is all rubbish.
I remember Police Story was ahead of its time in that most of the open sequence was the first scene of the show (with the credits superimposed).. with only a stinger with the theme heading to the first break..or something to that effect.. I'm glad to see the close "in the clear" after all these years. Where I grew up, they always did a voice over promoing something so you couldn't enjoy it.
This credit slate (going by all the guest stars) is from "The Cut Man Caper" which aired 10/28/75, the lone remaining PS episode to retain the CPT Pretzel logo at the end.
One of the first attempts at big govt propaganda to anesthetize us to the brutality and dishonesty of the big city police departments.

This was a great series and a must on Scottish Television at the time.
Realistic, well-researched and supebly acted.
I remember, particularly, episodes with Hugh O' Brien and Jerry Lee Lewis, plus Lloyd Bridges.
Excellent theme tune.
Has the series been digitally remastered? Anyone know?
