I lived on Westchester Ave. with my parents back in the 60s, and our apartment was right at the same height as the elevated. You could almost see the tracks from the window. The closest station was well within walking distance. It was on the corner with Prospect Ave.
Sometimes, my mom, and I would sit out on the fire escape to watch the trains go by, and the buses below on the street. Good times.
@IAmOpenMinded sounds like fun to me. Although i dont see much find in watching these new trains anymore simply because these new trains SUCK. If we had the old skool graffiti trains back on the MTA, then it would defitnitly be much more fun to watch them go by.
@noreaga12326 I haven't been in NYC for nearly 40 years so I don't know what the newer trains look like! My parents got a divorce in 1972 and I chose to go with mom. We moved out of the state that same year. Sadly, both of my parents have passed away a fews years ago, and I have been living in Florida for the past 23 years. I look forward one day to visit Westchester Avenue in the Bronx to RIDE the train. That would bring back some old memories.:-)
@IAmOpenMinded i wana start off by saying that im very sorry to hear about the passing of your parents. u have missed alot as far as the trains here in nyc. the 70s and 80s was my favorite era of nyc. one reason is because of the trains and how they used to look. I missed the old skool graffiti filled loud beasts that would pass by or that would roll up into the station. the new trains are not as nice. i think the MTA is slowly messing up the system. ur not missing much now my friend.
I miss the Red Birds which roared by on the Westchester Avenue line. I remember when it was all Red Bird 2 and 5's. My Grand parents use to live on Allerton Ave near the EL Station. I remember when i was little watching the the Red Birds fly by in Both Directions. Man the Roar of the Subway cars and seeing 10 Car sets of R-33 or R-26's was a great memory of my Grandparents house. nice Video
