Methane gas.

In that area there is at the seabottom lots and lots of methane gas, lots of it solidified (due to pressure and temp at that depth) but every now and then a shitload of gas is released. The tremendous amount of bubbles makes the water less "dense" and ships that happen to be there loose their floatability (buoancy?) Then when the gas reaches the air it causes planes to crash and causes strange visibility issues.
