I think both cultures of riding are very different and very hard for different reasons. I ride english but have tried western with my quarter horse a few times and it is HARD! but it is wayyy more easier to stay on compared to english. However, both disciplines require top notch training to make the horse as comfortable as possible to do its job successfully.
Great video. I'm tired of pol thinking that just because we are barrel racers we abuse our horses. We do love our horses it's just a sterotype like ALL big dogs are mean and will bite. It's not true. Just because some barrel racers can't ride doesn't mean we allare the same.

I wouldn't really say it's cowardly, considering an ambulance ride combined with hospital bills can easily cost upwards of $5,000. I'd rather avoid getting knocked out and having to pay a few thousand dollars after I've regained consciousness & woke up to find crazy expensive medical bills.
And we also buy pads that are worth $100 or more so that it is more comfortable for the horse, we use bell boots and other protective gear, and when we are done (most of us) cool the horse out, untack and give them a good brushing. Then they get fresh water, grain, hay, a nice stall, etc. I wouldn't really say poor horses. Yeah, this video is pretty graphic at some points, but to be blunt, shit happens. It's just like in any other sport, there's always a danger to it.
Oh god these clips are familiar haha. Ive been through that kinda crap before. Ive had a horse that got scared in his first REAL rodeo barrel race panic and jump one of the barrels, buck like crazy and take off back to the gate. I managed to stay on during that one. If you watch my barrel racing pics video I made on here you can see my first ever accident. I got the actual X Ray on there. Broken wrist when Dash flipped over ontop of me. He reared and fell over.

A good rider doesn't need to worry as much about falling, and yes, my hat looks nice XP. I tried english, and sure does take skill. The saddle is so open compared to western. I've tried jumping, and it is fun, but still perfer my western seat. Dressage is boring, the only pattern i'd like to memorize is the clover-pattern of barrels.
