@PureBlindMan - going airborne means that you have whatever job in the army with the additional training of jumping out of a plane.  if there was a conventional war and the US was to invade an enemy the airborne would jump in behind enemy lines and secure or destroy strategic assets making it easier for the main ground invasion force...however in afghanistan its different seeming as its an a-symmetrical war where individual units operate out of forward operating bases in local areas
