I was 11 and had to deliver papers in Farmington Hills, MI. I ran as fast as I could looking through windows. Finally got home and we were the only one on the block with a color TV. I have been a Spartan ever since!!
My friends and I watched this game at my house during my birthday party - I turned ten on that very same day. I only remember two plays - Michigan State's touchdown and ND's game-tying field goal on the first play of the fourth quarter - but I remember the 1966 Irish squad very well. IMHO that was Ara's best squad - even better than the '73 edition. They notched six shutouts and had fate been kinder, they could have had eight.
Game of the century! Man, those teams were giants back then. Even though I'm an MSU fan, Notre Dame was really the best. MSU was lucky to tie. Very lucky.
State was up by 10. How can you possibly say State was lucky to tie Notre Dame? ND was extremely lucky to come back in this game. ND should have gone for the win. ND was lucky to even have a chance to tie.
I was 2 yrs old at the time but I did read about the game. Notre Dame had an incredible season, demolishing all of their opponents. MSU had a little trouble on the way to other victories (e.g., Ohio State). ND missed a close field goal and had the momentum late in the game.
Parseghian was a woos for not playing to win. It was inexcusable and a stain on their program. To this day coaches usually play to win, in memory of that fiasco.
