Kind of reminds me of the new film. A Teenage Crew takes command with the senior staff gone and a bold charismatic Captain goes way over his head and engages a highly advanced and very powerful enemy ship. Goes if your name ain't James T. Kirk you're busted!
@i5318008 For the basic reason it was originally a training ship. Of course, the plot is also based on 18th-century and 19th-century ideas.
At that time it was often that teenagers ended up in command positions - sometimes even children, rather than teenagers, as young as 12. They did their duty along with the adults - nobody at the time believed being a 'teenager' somehow makes you stupid.
@i5318008 Well this team of 35 Star Fleet, Top of the class Cadets is known as "Red Squad". These young cadets were on a training mission with 7 regular officers when there Star ship the "Valiant" was attacked. These officers died as a result of the attack. The previous Captain, before he died, gave Tim Watters (the young captain in the video) command of the ship. This show takes place 8 months after that event.
Gotta disagree with MicroBalrog. If a corporal was commanding a platoon of troops because his superiors were killed. If a lieutenant from another platoon and his troops come along, he is not able to take command of them, he would required to take command of them in order to facilitate a working command structure
I have to admit they were easy to hate but just as easy to root for,, U really wanted them to succeed in there mission. even though with all their faults they did had an unyeilding conviction and confidence
I have to say that the blond acting chief petty officer in this episode has to be the sexiest actress in all star trek history. I know most won't agree but I'd love to find me a loner schooner like her!
the Ferengi should have never been able to join starfleet. i don't care what anyone says, they are soulless little demons whose only reason of being on the show is to make humans look like a better species in comparison.
Field Commission or Regular Commission as a rule any commission officer has the right to take command if the officer is command qualified. However Ensign Nog does not have command abilities. He is merely by experience the same as a first year cadet. Comparing apple to apples to apples Look Ensign Crusher and Ensign Nog I would give Wesley Crusher command before Nog. Only Because Wesley has more time on and experience at the helm. Wesley got his training from Capt Picard and Cmdr Riker.
@MicroBalrog uhh... Nog was fully graduated and commissioned by this episode.
And yes, he would outrank them, but... the cadet was Acting Captain on that vessel. He SHOULD have turned command over to the senior ranking officer, but he doesn't have to. Unless he breached regulations, there are only three ways he could be forced to relinquish command: by an order from Starfleet, directly by an admiral, or by the Chief Medical Officer.
@RCSlyman The CMO was also a member of Red Squad and as the final scene of the episode shows, she believed in the 'Captain' so much that she said they failed him during the mission.
@MicroBalrog You're right about field commissions counting; however, it was granted by a cadet "captain." Therefore, Nog would outrank the "captain" of the Valiant.
-Even in the US Military there's a thing called billets or Office of responsibility. It's like going to SEAL Buds Training. The Officers have to do what the Petty Officers Instructors say until he graduates. The Venture's Captain was assign to the cadet because he has been trained for command. Just like Kirk took command in the Star Trek Movie after Captain Pike was captured. I don't agree with cadets taking command of ships with no real world experience but that's the ST Universe.
Although MicroBalrog is right, in this case he could have taken command of the ship because their ranks were "honorary." He did, indeed, outrank everyone aboard.
@LegateShatner In modern naval protocol, Nog, a commissioned officer, would have immediately outranked the entire crew of the Valiant, all of whom were cadets. However, writer Ronald D. Moore has stated that he based the premise on an 18th and 19th century naval tradition that an acting captain can only be removed from command by a flag officer.
@LegateShatner no he's acting captain, he was given command, but if he could not perform his duty's he would be revealed, also another captain or admiral could take command.
@LegateShatner the ranking system from lowest to highest is: cadet, crewman, ensign, luitenant, luitenant-commander, commander, captain, rear-admiral, vice-admiral, admiral.
@LegateShatner unfortunatly no as the captain recived a battle field commishion..how ever he would out rank every other member as the captain was the ONLY one to recive his commishion from a decorated officer..the kid as he said in the EP promoted other members of the crew as necisary..there ranks are a tempary at best a doctor with Nog could relive the captain as Nog is a comishioned member of starfleet in theory..hope this helps
Great for standard motion pictures and traditional television broadcasting. I would go to the movie to see what they did. It would not be the same as seeing James Tiberius Kirk, Spock, Bones, Uhura, Sulu and Scotty
Just listen to that last build-up of commands and responses in the last 30 seconds... and then I DARE you to tell me you don't get a little jolt of adrenaline at the end of it!
This episode, written by future BSG Exec Producer, Ron Moore shows an early version of idea he pulled off with much better effect in BSG universe as the Pegasus/Razor storyline with ST:TNG's Michelle Forbes as Admiral Cain. A ship behind enemy lines for a long time, cut off, and how they and their Captain react to the situation. Fun to see the evolution of an idea. Thanks for posting.
Thanks for posting. I haven't seen this episode since it first aired 11 years ago (in May 1998), and yet I remember it very clearly from watching this clip.
My local UPN station (Channel 33 in Miami) used to run new episodes of Voyager at 9 and DS9 at 10 on Wednesday nights, and two hours of Voyager reruns at 1 a.m. Sunday morning. I never missed an episode.
Trek is the one element from that time of my life that I remember most clearly and fondly.
I love how in the future we have mastered faster-than-light travel, instant matter transportation and re-structuring, shields that can withstand the forces of wormholes, and energy weapons that can vaporize entire sections of planets. Yet, as 0:35 clearly demonstrates, we will never invent anything more handy than a plastic storage locker with a single shelf. Go figure.
@MicroBalrog originally valiant was going to be the name of the defiant, but it was too close to voyager launch, and they didnt want any other "v" named ships
While there were some elements in this of "true believers" in the negative sense, I can't help but admire these guys' guts.
