Yeah i do agree that it is a beautiful song. I've just taken the words a little too literally i think & coupled that with the fact that Bryan is singing it & even though i know he didn't write the song, decided that it makes him sound like a horrible person who doesn't care if he hurts girls. I still love him though, just don't like the song, that's all.
Another lovely interpretation of Brian Ferry's. I wish people would stop clapping as soon as songs begin. Applause is for the end. The singer appears flippant but is also aware of the pain of falling in love as s/he is doing so; and of love's pleasure but fleeting nature. It's a two way choice!

Your observation is correct. But the self-centredness is part of the point of this song.
I think what makes it popular isn't so much the meaning of the words as it is the way the words flow along with the melody, and the way the melody itself is so beautiful. IMHO.
