Compared to more recent news, its obvious that the initial coverage was not completely fair. The government was quick to declare all the suspects guilty, thereby negating the impartiality of their own judicial system, creating a controlled set of talking points for the media, and pre-determining public opinion.
We feel that an opposing viewpoint is only fair and healthy in a free, democratic society. We do not, however, pass judgment in the film. Let me stress this: at no point in the documentary do we claim that the suspects are innocent. That is for a court of law to decide. We simply state the facts as they were reported by the popular media, and try to remind the public about some of the other, less-emphasized information such as Project Thread.
I think our skepticism toward a government with past corrupt dealings, who made a power-play at a politically-opportune moment, has been justified by the fact that 7 of these suspects have been released 7 innocent people that the RCMP has publicly labeled as guilty terrorists (one of them was allegedly the ringleader!).
From being present at some of the court proceedings, I can tell you that the wiretaps I have listened to are really nothing special. I have lost trust in the Canadian judiciary. Justice is hard to find these days, even in the civilized world, there are stories of injustice that the general public either doesn't know or doesn't care about.
Thanks for the article I was unaware that the Government stopped preliminary hearings in the middle of them. In Canada, preliminary hearings are routine to determine if there is enough evidence to go to trial. We don't have a Grand Jury system like the US so prosecutors are free to file charges at their whim. It is during the preliminary hearings that Judges evaluate the evidence to determine if there is enough to go to trial. Stopping the preliminary hearings is a miscarriage of justice.

-Large quantities of fertilizer were purchased by members of the group.

Thanks for your questions. This film was supposed to serve partly as a collection of the media reports from that summer, in order to document how the suspects were portrayed at the time. Compared to more recent news, its obvious that the initial coverage was not completely fair. The government was quick to declare all the suspects guilty, thereby negating the impartiality of their own judicial system, creating a controlled set of talking points for the media, and pre-determining public opinion.

Thanks for the article I was unaware that the Government stopped preliminary hearings in the middle of them. In Canada, preliminary hearings are routine to determine if there is enough evidence to go to trial. We don't have a Grand Jury system like the US so prosecutors are free to file charges at their whim. It is during the preliminary hearings that Judges evaluate the evidence to determine if there is enough to go to trial. Stopping the preliminary hearings is a miscarriage of justice.

Canada has approx. 600,000 Muslims, mostly well integrated and never bothered by security services. If this was indeed a systematic discriminatory gesture as many conspiracy theorists claim, we would see FAR more action being taken against a massive swath of people, not just 18 questionable individuals and handful (5,6?)of security certificates.

Granted, the chances of death due to terror is low. But the implications, quite serious (both economic and social). In all honesty, the chance of my home catching fire is quite marginal too (0.3%), but would I make sacrifices now (insurance, smoke alarms)to mitigate the risk of a improbable but disastrous event in the future? You bet. In this respect, it is better to be safe than sorry.

What really disturbs me is the lack of understanding between the different races and religions here. As nice as would be to say "Can't we all just get along?' but that is beside the point. We will never grow as a society as long as we believe that our might is right and spend no time understanding people who are different than ourselves. Once we can show tolerance to others we will move on from our differences and celebrate them instead of opposing them.
