I like experimenting with fusing things together, but I have my limits. I've attended many lion dance ceremonies and I find this really sad. Keep it traditional!!! There's a reason why the movements of the lion dance is like that, and to taint it that way is an insult. Hope they didn't get the red envelopes.
The dancers are innovative, however I think it is not acceptable, you guys should preserves the traditional, and implement the dances for certain segment only. Lions still should be doing the moves as though how a traditional lion dance should move!!!

Nobody even do high post lion dancing then but now it is standard for all lion dancing competition. Can we say high post lion dancing is "not traditional"? Also, the styles of lion heads went through many changes. What we call "traditional" of anything are constantly evolving and changing. Don't mistake "rigid" as being "traditional". One have nothing to do with the other.

If the creators were to add ballet movement and tango SHARP snaps of the head and portray the loose shoulders of hip hop by flapping the sides or whatever, it would have made more sense. This is typical of the current value of "instant" culture - with no study; mix everything and rojak the whole thing and call it art - what are we degenerating to?
Like many others, I feel that this, though entertaining, is too uni-dimensional to be considered art. It is just hip hop with Lion Dance costumes - just like doing a Malay dance in tutus. Also the mix of music was too mixed - from the dance of the little swans to tango.
Now the Lion Dance originally mimics the movements of a Lion - catlike and elegant - and interpret an animal with 4 legs performed by 2 "animals" with 2 legs - imagine the coordination involved

well from the evidence of the video, it seems MORE people enjoyed this than to take offense! i must say this is a very refreshing idea to mix tradition with modern elements, i don't think they are looking to put up a traditional liondance show, it looks like it was done on purpose to showcase the city's versatility where east meets west to promote the country as a hip and creative place.

as a huge fan of Lion Dancing and Breakdancing. Both which I've done in the past and respect....this is just so cheesy!!!
Maybe its just those giant Buddha heads and Lion Dancers doing terrible choreography to some cheesy techno music.
I don't know. I'm not feeling it. I wouldn't be so proud saying I hip hop dance in a Buddha head or a Lion Dance outfit.

well from the evidence of the video, it seems MORE people enjoyed this than to take offense! i must say this is a very refreshing idea to mix tradition with modern elements, i don't think they are looking to put up a traditional liondance show, it looks like it was done on purpose to showcase the city's versatility where east meets west to promote the country as a hip and creative place.

@jping83 it is mot a mixture of tradition with modern elements(Ballet and tango modern??) but doing a medley of non Chinese dances wearing lion dance costume laced with minute traces of lion dance. Maybe corruption rather than mixture is a more appropriate term. Bring on Line dancing Lion dancing...

I like to see how lion dance is incorporated in hip hop nowadays. others will disagree and complain about not following traditions but the heck with them. seems like hip hop lion dancing is becoming popular.
