FUCK MTV. There are a few exceptions, like Beavis and Butthead, but on the whole FUCK MTV and Viacom and all the media conglomerate bullshit culture herders.
@dlwatso15 all the videos in my video were taken from television, from one of many networks many of whome were/are owned by MTV. It's possible the Transplants video was from one of the "smaller" video stations and not an MTV one but chances are they were on an MTV/VH1 type channel and therefor from MTV. Rest assured ALL these videos were taken from my television though, not from videos downloaded from the internet. - spikevicious
I would agree with this song, but I don't think MTV actually plays music anymore. But it still has some relevance since most music channels play a bunch of shitty pop music that they sometimes call rock, and prevent kids from being exposed to music that's actually good.
ya know that is funny now that i read comments, i dont watch tv much but..mtv really doesnt play music as much as they used to its all that real world and "reality" crap reality to me is the harshness they block off television
Even the Dead Kennedys could not foresee MTV turning into a channel that barely shows music. I guess there is more money in promoting social degeneration across the board, without those pesky fractionated music demographics!
To be honest, I don't think the DS's had anything against the very basics of MTV and music videos. I think they were disgusted by all the garbage MTV was promoting, while ignoring potentially good artists. Yes, there have been good musicians and videos on MTV and I don't think anybody has a problem with that. But taking music that kids will like when they're 12 but will hate by the time they're 15 and making musicians look like gods is utterly disgusting.
Tool, Rage Against The Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Alice in Chains has been on MTV, and they are still good too, just like Nirvana, but none of those bands "support" MTV, and that's why Nirvana played the opening bar to Rape Me for a while instead of playing Lithium. Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you buy their (any of these band's) album, no money goes to MTV anyways.
@manof1000languages plus, I'm a really big fan of Dead Kennedy's, and I'm not trying to make them look like hypocrites, but Jello Biafra performed with The Offspring, Tool and Body Count, so he's played with bands that've contributed to MTV, and a Dead Kennedys song was in rock band, but that wasn't Jello's fault/doing, however, the rest of the band have sold out now.
like what you did with the video. i think it would have also been better if you'd had some of their god awful commercials :hair products, fast food, cell phone, sex protection, major corporation ads, real world/road trip/ ummmm sex and get really trashed with anybody show.) and their 75% reality t.v. shows for dumbass college students.
@BLACKIESBOY i would think its just mtv telling people wats cool 2 do and whats not (as usual) and believe me theyve had other " is dead weeks" 2 ex. "grunge is dead" and "punk is dead" (fuck mtv)
I don't comment on music videos unless they're exceptionally well made. I agree that MTV has riuned the music industry and makes bands conform to gain acceptance. I've had this album ever since it came out. A lot of bands are just in it for the money now and that sucks. I do like "Don't You Want Me" by Human League though lol.
Personally, I enjoy Nirvana, Queens of the Stone Age, and Radiohead (all in this video), but just because you personally enjoy a band doesn't change the impact of this song. I think certain music videos can definitely be artistic, but we've placed way too much emphasis on them. I'm glad he included Nirvana, because their fans are just as guilty as hero-worship/fanboyism as anyone else.
MTV is a shitty industry that needs to remove it's corporate claws from contemporary music.
@Tommyk1980 Not the point. MTV is wrong no matter who's video is playing on it. I enjoy the music by a lot of the bands in this video, Nirvana included, but by enjoying their music I allow it to enter my ears. Music Television destroyed and continues to erode at decent artist based music - the internet may be giving a little back but MTV continues to pollute and erode at the minds of the youth in new and inventive ways. The song isn't called "Nirvana Get Off The Air" for a reason.
@AutisticPersona I think Jello Biafra (lead singer of Dead kennedys in case you don't know) actually quoted that B&B was the only good thing they ever did
@skookid10 (This is spikevicious under my usual username) Firstly the video isn't against any of the bands, good or bad, in the video. I like many of them, Nirvana included. Secondly, pretty sure Nirvana had many well produced videos which would serve nothing but to further MTV's means. If they hated them "just as much as DK" they wouldn't have spent so much time making them. I don't doubt they had their grievances, just not that strong.
@skookid10 rape me has nothing to do with mtv. The song was, quite literally, about rape. Ironically, Kurt wrote rape me with lyrics so obvious that no-one could pick it apart and over-analyse it... which is exactly what they did.
Jello has to love this video...the rest of the band may sue, though. Didn't they have a years-long legal feud? I actually had the album with the H.R. Geiger poster that got them in trouble.
@drmondo The rest of the band can suck it! Actually I went to see them sans-Jello in Scotland a few years ago. Not bad but it was hard not to just be thinking "If Jello was singing this would be perfect..." during the gig.
Anyway, I believe the righst to the song still belong to Alternative Tentacles overall and I doubt they'll issue a take-down. Worst that can happen is the video gets taken down though.
the only people who even care about MTV are dumb mindless teenage girls and boys. Nirvana weren't sellouts. REM aren't sellouts either. the offspring are.
@Chruselle (This is spikevicious, my other username)
If you asked Nirvana themselves they'd tell you they sold out. That's part of what made Kurt so damn depressed. And REM are too, they might not see it that way... anyone who makes decisions to do with music with the intention of increasing PROFIT has sold out... nothing wrong with that, really, and it's not really the point in having any of the bands in the video but it's not honest to say they didn't sell out at some point...
Its funny because i read your info-sidebar and realized that the "man" you are talking about is everything/anything that doesn't think the way you do.(to a previous comment below) I'm sorry that you are angry that you REM or OS stopped making their music specifically for you, because they clearly made music just for you.Why don't you all grow up a little. The way you finished the end of that sidebar was actually quite perfect. You are a fat washed up loser. Do yourself a favor and just give up.
goddamn mtv is even worse now, with all the "reality shows", i feel sorry for people who were born past 1995 they have absolutely no idea what they are in for
By 2012, MTV (or eMpty TV for that matter) will seal its ultimate fate...
...it will get off the air because of its heavy reliance on reality TV airing on a network with a misleading name. No real fan ever wants to see rich girls and drama queens celebrating their 16th birthdays.
Their corporate parent Viacom will also be shut down, due to a tyrannical boss who destroyed years of real entertainment.
My solution is the intelligent people leaving normal society, and founding micronations, trading with each other, totally isolated from the normal society.
However, this idea is insane.
So I'd guess just organizing boycotts and reading books instead of watching TV.
I'm your video DJ I always talk like I'm wigged out on quaaludes I wear a satin baseball jacket everywhere I go My job is to help destroy What's left of your imagination By feeding you endless doses Of sugar-coated mindless garbage So don't create Be sedate Be a vegetable at home And thwack on that dial If we have our way even you will believe This is the future of rock and roll
I would just like to announce the dedication of my YouTube channel to Jello Biafra and the Dead Kennedys.
It was they who for so long were left to scream out alone against the spectatorship of the mass media and for the concept of a fully participatory media.
Now in 2009 Hollywood is dying and we all have own TV stations on YouTube where we can broadcast whatever we want.
(unless of course we violate some copywrite restriction, then we move it over to MetaCafe : ) )
dude are those teenage boys spoofing clockwork orange? i watched this awesome video of yours countless times but i just now noticed that one scene where the kid had one eye lashed eye exposed to the camera and then smiles. it looks like a scene out of clockwork orange! if that little shit actually did defile clockwork orange, he needs to be drawn and quartered....NOW!
Steady on! They are indeed... but I don't think they were teenagers when they made the vid. It's Blur with their song "The Universal" which is a pretty decent song and I'd call the video a reference than a defiling or spoof. Check it out!
The song is anti-MTV. I'm sure if MTV hadn't run music into the ground while providing music videos the Dead Kennedys might not have had such a problem with it.
No, you should be ashamed of yourself for being the seemingly sole advocate for R.E.M!
Seriously though, the intro is like 5 seconds of your life, the ending is fucking TOTO... so no real problems there.
As for my choice of bands (R.E.M or otherwise, there are plenty bands in the video I like, R.E.M somewhat included) - the song isn't necessarily about artists but about Music Television. Shame on all artists, good and bad, who buy and/or bought into it!
Of all the bands to use, why Blur? Blur isn't that mainstream. And to the guy who posted this video. What are you doing, if not supporting the man, by using the internet and a computer?
I watched MTV probably from 1988 to 1993, then after that i started drinking everyday and forgot about tv completely. For me, they had 2 good shows, 120minues and Headbangers Balls, other than that it was nothing but glam rock, pop, not even hip hop. MTV had always been for the masses, for the easily amused.
Love the song. But the description is kinda empty headed. "The man" has his fingers in every piece of pie in the media. But there is plenty of pie out there that "The man" cant touch. If that's how you feel about music. Then you clearly haven't looked beyond the media for new music. Those bands outside the media don't take media attention for one reason: The man controls it.
i think youve missed the point because the untouched pie you speak of is not part of the media lol... thats why its untouched... its not marketable therefor not popular media jello speaks of... so i think you just need to pay attention and not be so jerk knee re action to act like you know more then jello lol hes talking about corporate music not underground.. OBVIOUSLY if thats not obvious i dunno.. lol
Not marketable to the mainstream. Yes, it's not what jello is talking about. And I never claimed to be smarted then him. Maybe you should pay attention and read the description on the side of the video. I was speaking to the person who uploaded this video. Not Jello.
I checked Google and every web site I could think of to find out if there is any fact behind the rumor that Biafra is dead. He is not. Don't be so gullible, falling for some kid playing pranks. Besides, I got a hard time picturing that guy ever getting on a horse OR going to someplace like New Zealand.
I think the media is covering it up! They don't want a full scale rebellion on their hands! (BTW, The horse/New Zealand thing was me referencing a month or two ago when a rumor that Jeff Goldblum had died, when he hadn't)
Spikevicious, sorry I called you a 'kid playing pranks' I should not have been rude, but Biafra is currently in San Francisco and did a brief interveiw with one of their small community newspapers two days ago. love the 'video' by the way. does a good job making a visualization of the songs messege.
What video? I made this years ago, long before I uploaded even and didn't copy anyone elses video at the time... just decided to make a music video mash up to a song I like.
i think there is a strong argument that the opening lyric "my job is to help destroy whats left of your imagination by feeding you endless doses of SUGAR COATED MINDLESS GARBAGE" doesnt just apply to mtv, but in fact applies to most mainstream media, Especially channel 7 in australia. JELLO BIAFRA WILL NEVER DIE, AS HIS SPIRIT WILL ALWAYS LIVE ON IN THE HEARTS OF THE INSUBORDINATE!!!
yes mtv is very sucky now, not like back when ray cokes was doing his most wanted. In fact I can't remember the last time i watched any music channel. SUGAR COATED MINDLESS GARBAGE!
A bunch of people... I have all their albums (I only own all the albums of two other bands so that's a semi-big deal) personally but even now when I listen to them sometimes I think they sound dated
MTV is supposed to stand for Music Television, but all I see on that channel is "reality" tv series. There's actually more music television in this clip right here than in one whole day of MTV.
Best song on Frankenchrist, but seriously why did you have to put Blur in the compilation? Blur may be more industrious than the Dead Kennedys, but they are still fantastic artists.
MTV doesn't show music anymore. Not even MTV 2. Its all reality TV and celebrities lip-synching into mics with "pretty people" dancing in the background. Where do I tune in for new, great music? Not usually on TV (in fact hardly ever), and never on MTV!!!
It doesn't seem like this video gets watched often, but I hope some kid reads this and takes it seriously.
Turn off the fucking television.
Don't support things you don't care for by refusing to consume them. It's pretty simple, right?
Watching commercials makes money for people.
You got a lot of information here at your fingertips. You can learn a lot more on the web than by watching television.

theJPKexperience 2 years ago
No, you should be ashamed of yourself for being the seemingly sole advocate for R.E.M!
Seriously though, the intro is like 5 seconds of your life, the ending is fucking TOTO... so no real problems there.
As for my choice of bands (R.E.M or otherwise, there are plenty bands in the video I like, R.E.M somewhat included) - the song isn't necessarily about artists but about Music Television. Shame on all artists, good and bad, who buy and/or bought into it!

It's amazing to me that mtv suck when this song came up and now not only does it suck more they don't even play music anymore.
Dexflorida 2 years ago 24
the whole point of this song is that music videos destroy the idea of a song, to make a video for it, no matter how full of protest, is stupid
WHOM3television 2 years ago 2
This whole effect was pretty much already achieved with "GG allin back from the dead". But it's still all good.
Verminshow 2 years ago
Yup. They've pretty much fucked the mainstream's whole idea of music.
But as you said, It's all good.
There are still people out there who know better.
thatsthesystem 2 years ago
Of all the bands to use, why Blur? Blur isn't that mainstream. And to the guy who posted this video. What are you doing, if not supporting the man, by using the internet and a computer?
Java0Wolf 2 years ago 3
yeah thats what i thought. Blur and radiohead shouldnt be there.
kilian 2 years ago 2
I watched MTV probably from 1988 to 1993, then after that i started drinking everyday and forgot about tv completely. For me, they had 2 good shows, 120minues and Headbangers Balls, other than that it was nothing but glam rock, pop, not even hip hop. MTV had always been for the masses, for the easily amused.
oldtownkid 2 years ago
mtv always sucked. it only looks like it does now because you're older so you can recognize it easier.
hamsto24 2 years ago
mtv used to be cool, now the only thing they have is katy perry, britney spears and some bullshit rappers.
TheBlackenedWHITE 2 years ago
when the fuck was it cool lol... i dont remember a time when it was cool

when they started
TheBlackenedWHITE 2 years ago
Love the song. But the description is kinda empty headed. "The man" has his fingers in every piece of pie in the media. But there is plenty of pie out there that "The man" cant touch. If that's how you feel about music. Then you clearly haven't looked beyond the media for new music. Those bands outside the media don't take media attention for one reason: The man controls it.
thatsthesystem 2 years ago
i think youve missed the point because the untouched pie you speak of is not part of the media lol... thats why its untouched... its not marketable therefor not popular media jello speaks of... so i think you just need to pay attention and not be so jerk knee re action to act like you know more then jello lol hes talking about corporate music not underground.. OBVIOUSLY if thats not obvious i dunno.. lol
rickhorror 2 years ago
Not marketable to the mainstream. Yes, it's not what jello is talking about. And I never claimed to be smarted then him. Maybe you should pay attention and read the description on the side of the video. I was speaking to the person who uploaded this video. Not Jello.
thatsthesystem 2 years ago
they once had rockzone on mtv... it came on fucking 12 o clock night and it only was on wednesday...
that fucking hour of rock contained emo bullshit... and now they dont even got it anymore... i say fuck MTV!

Very well done video, too. The one DK song I never thought would get a video... and it has one.

I checked Google and every web site I could think of to find out if there is any fact behind the rumor that Biafra is dead. He is not. Don't be so gullible, falling for some kid playing pranks. Besides, I got a hard time picturing that guy ever getting on a horse OR going to someplace like New Zealand.
davedorger 2 years ago
I think the media is covering it up! They don't want a full scale rebellion on their hands! (BTW, The horse/New Zealand thing was me referencing a month or two ago when a rumor that Jeff Goldblum had died, when he hadn't)
spikevicious 2 years ago
Spikevicious, sorry I called you a 'kid playing pranks' I should not have been rude, but Biafra is currently in San Francisco and did a brief interveiw with one of their small community newspapers two days ago. love the 'video' by the way. does a good job making a visualization of the songs messege.

u just copied the other video lik this and ruined it ur a asshole
pigslaught666 2 years ago
What video? I made this years ago, long before I uploaded even and didn't copy anyone elses video at the time... just decided to make a music video mash up to a song I like.
spikevicious 2 years ago
i think there is a strong argument that the opening lyric "my job is to help destroy whats left of your imagination by feeding you endless doses of SUGAR COATED MINDLESS GARBAGE" doesnt just apply to mtv, but in fact applies to most mainstream media, Especially channel 7 in australia. JELLO BIAFRA WILL NEVER DIE, AS HIS SPIRIT WILL ALWAYS LIVE ON IN THE HEARTS OF THE INSUBORDINATE!!!
shasta723 2 years ago
Dude! Did Jello Biafra fall off a horse in New Zealand?
spikevicious 2 years ago
Awesome Vid. RIP Jello Biafra.
RockstarRacc00n 2 years ago
RIP? Do you mean like "he's dead to me!" or do you actually think he dropped dead?
spikevicious 2 years ago
Yes, he recently died.

Um, link dude? I'm not finding this anywhere.

MTV is supposed to stand for Music Television, but all I see on that channel is "reality" tv series. There's actually more music television in this clip right here than in one whole day of MTV.

Best song on Frankenchrist, but seriously why did you have to put Blur in the compilation? Blur may be more industrious than the Dead Kennedys, but they are still fantastic artists.
spookmonster52 2 years ago 3
Just using clips from videos... music videos in themselves are inherently shameful and wrong no matter how great the artist behind them is.
I don't necessarily hate any or all of the artists in the video, just MTV itself.
spikevicious 2 years ago
MTV doesn't show music anymore. Not even MTV 2. Its all reality TV and celebrities lip-synching into mics with "pretty people" dancing in the background. Where do I tune in for new, great music? Not usually on TV (in fact hardly ever), and never on MTV!!!
