I can attest to what he's saying. I had a friend who was "busted" by a news reporter but luckily I too work in the same market and knew the real story. A reporter can twist a story any way he likes it and say what he wants because it's your word against his as to who said what. And the reporter has the editorial power not the subject. If you drop 50 lbs and post your picture online, a reporter could turn around and say, "Man puts up perverted photos online for children to see." It happens.
