It was quite an exciting moment!! It is quite funny really to strap on a pair of ski's and then throw yourself down a quarter mile slide, and into the air!!! lol Now we have the poor luge sleder from Georgia to remember. This one had a much happier ending.......
At some point during the 1980 Winter Olympic Broadcast (US), Jim McKay had an "acting" part in a humorous little skit--the sketch had two (very tough!) hockey players sitting in the penalty box, discussing the book one of them was authoring: A book about cooking (I kid you not)!
They managed to work themselves into a brawl over a disagreement about...get this...the "proper temperature at which to cook a souffle!!!"
A brilliant little skit I would dearly love to see again.
Yes, the volume of sports broadcasting has increased exponentially, but the quality certainly hasn't......so many wonderful Saturday afternoons!!! best wishes
He did unfortunately pass away this weekend 6/7/08......A sad loss for many! He certainly contributed to the extraordinary flourishment of figure skating in the US, and worldwide. He will always be there with us, with little children dreaming, and old folks reminesing....setting a very dramatic stage!! best wishes, thanks for commenting...
Like most Americans the Wide World of Sports was must a must see for me as a kid. With the loss of Jim Mckay last night. I thought it was a good time to relive this moment in American TV. RIP Jim you will be missed.
Thanks for remembering him, and taking time to post! I answered the above comment with my thoughts....but like Christopher Bowmans untimely death, this is wrenching many tears from skating hearts around the country!! best wishes
Oh and another thing. Vinko is Slovenian. Slovenia was at that time a part of Yugoslavia and since 1991 we're independent. Btw, all Yugoslavian ski jumpers were Slovenians 'cause ski jumping was traditionally Slovenian sport, other nations didn't have that. The same goes for other winter sports.
lol...but there are still a few cultural backwaters (France ;') )of significant merit, and some nice places to live....but i'll take suburban America any day, and just enjoy the wonderful things others have to offer....as I can afford it! which is not often with the dollar as it is today! best wishes VOTE when you can Americans, its all we have to control these freaks!!!
March 21, 1970 to be exact. The most watched ski accident in the world IMO. I remember my first thought back then as he twirled and tumbled like a rag doll. "OMG!... this guy 'bought the farm'"!
That infamous "Agony of Defeat" skiing accident took place in Oberstdorf, Germany

For some reason, the combination of the song and McKay's narrative made me cry.

As a boy, I saw this happen live. I must have been 9 or 10 so that dates this event around 1970.
