We used to go see him at the coffee houses around the University of Miami (FL) in the 60's. He was incredible. Many don't realize that he had a tremendous influence on the music of the 60's and 70's including, Steven Stills, David Crosby, Joni Mitchell and many others. He's a much under appreciated singer and song writer.
People are too quick to say that one version is better than another. As long as the artist has something to say, multiple versions of the same song can be equally beautiful.
I have memories of Fred Neil and I would like to post this video on my blog some day soon. He was great friends with another singer-songwriter I write about Ersel Hickey in New York. This became his most famous composition when it was used for the movie Midnight Cowboy. Come visit at WES BRYAN - MY LIFE IN MUSIC
I never, NEVER understood why "they" didn't use this original for Midnight Cowboy. Music "politiks" undoubtedly ! When I first heard Fred's Sessions album back in '70 or '71 I got me a Martin D-35-12. Still use that guitar, still play some of Fred's songs.
This guy was the real deal...wrote killer tunes, hung out with dylan, crosby, split to south florida,'fore they made him some big time phony......just a southern boy havin fun in the big city, then later with a dolphin or two.
Heard this last weekend on Vermont Public Radio's "My Place"--theme of show was orig versions of songs later made famous by other artists, such as this, but this version is great too!
Thanks ~cjthemusicman~ for opening my eyes to this major classic..and, I thought Nilsson was the first...I love that I am still learning..how cool is that..thank you so much 45rpmSingles...for sharing the love and thank you YouTube for the moment..
This is a song about mental illness. Fred Neal wrote it and performed it. He was from Florida and spent time in NY City traveling the folk circuit. He returned to Florida eventually. His tune "Everybody's Talking" was basically the premise of the movie "Midnight Cowboy". This is a tune about Fred's life. There is a CD available of Fred's work with a foreward by David Crosby of CSN&Y that is worth a listen. Fred Neal was a complicated but brilliant man.
Mental illness??? Fred wrote this about being in New York with music biz guys telling him all the stuff they wanted him to do so they could make him a star and him thinking he'd rather be back home in Coconut Grove.
whew... that's a nice little jam right there. i've always loved nilsson's version and i've been looking for the original off and on, here and there for a while. never thought to check youtube...
thanks for posting this.
beautifully raw and well done song. i need to pick up this record.
Harry Nilsson also re-recorded "without you" originally by the Welsh band Badfinger. Needless to say the original is far, far ,far better than the heavily produced string inflected cover by Nilsson.
I feel for folks who haven't heard this version until now . . . not that there's anything wrong with Nilsson's, but this is the real thing. And as far as I'm concerned, if you listen to this closely, especially from about about 1:15 onward, you can hear where a lot of Jimmy Buffett's shtick came from. Buffett turned it into an industry, while Fred Neil until his death was one of the unknown, unheralded geniuses in American music.
While I respect the sublime craftsmanship and artistry of the vocally gifted Harry Nilsson, I sincerely adore this stripped-down original version by Fred Neil as the heartfelt one to beat! The lyrics are incredible, swirling with descriptive imagery that puts Neil in line with some of the finest singer-songwriter poets we have had in music over the years. The passion and conviction with his proud baritone is overwhelming and joyful. I think it still stands the test of time, relevant & beautiful.
@leftyodoul that may because the song was not written for the movie but about Fred Neil himself. Midnight Cowboy uses the song perfectly however. Its almost as if the movie was made around this great song.

Thank you, Peter. I don't see any connection between that song and so-called mental illness. Fred wrote a lot of tunes about his life.
