  • my god, this is great. it's the original! i knew Fred's music but I didn't know he wrote this. harry nilsson who?

  • I'm going back again!!

  • There's a superior version of this on some live recording - together with Dolphins, Bag and Cocain.

  • a glass of beautiful music !

  • He's singing about Coconut Grove- back in the 50's & 60's-

  • wow - thanks for posting!!! he has a great voice.

  • Sampled for Daft Punk's "Fresh".

  • Brilliant. I can't stop listening to this! Thanks for posting it.

  • We used to go see him at the coffee houses around the University of Miami (FL) in the 60's. He was incredible. Many don't realize that he had a tremendous influence on the music of the 60's and 70's including, Steven Stills, David Crosby, Joni Mitchell and many others. He's a much under appreciated singer and song writer.

  • Amazing and brilliant voice, it's shocking that he never really took off.

  • @Sshelly34213 That's okay he never wanted to be famous rather swimming in the ocean with dolphins ;)

  • @BluesYourAss lol I suppose so!

  • Yes !!!! this is fred Neil's song.

I know this since the early 70's

    Great song.

  • I had never heard this.

People are too quick to say that one version is better than another. As long as the artist has something to say, multiple versions of the same song can be equally beautiful.

  • what à voice ,que voz mas calida!!!Alui le grand mérite d'avoir composé cette magnifique chanson !une voix merveilleuse!R.I.P.great fred NEIL

  • I have memories of Fred Neil and I would like to post this video on my blog some day soon. He was great friends with another singer-songwriter I write about Ersel Hickey in New York. This became his most famous composition when it was used for the movie Midnight Cowboy. Come visit at WES BRYAN - MY LIFE IN MUSIC

  • Nilsson

  • Nilsson

  • I never, NEVER understood why "they" didn't use this original for Midnight Cowboy. Music "politiks" undoubtedly ! When I first heard Fred's Sessions album back in '70 or '71 I got me a Martin D-35-12. Still use that guitar, still play some of Fred's songs.

  • fred neil kicks ass

  • This guy was the real deal...wrote killer tunes, hung out with dylan, crosby, split to south florida,'fore they made him some big time phony......just a southern boy havin fun in the big city, then later with a dolphin or two.

  • This is my favorite song ever. Thanks for turning me on to the original!

  • I love this version but I have been a life long Nilsson fan and have to say I prefer harry on this song. This is still great though!

  • wonderful

  • the ORIGINAL and the BEST INTERPRETATION...

  • Dax riggs cover is best!

  • You`re kidding right? Yeah maybe if you were on thorazine. His has got to be one of the worst I`ve ever heard.

  • This song is genius holy shit dude. Think about the date of the creation... and this dude is the ORIGINAL.

  • Heard this last weekend on Vermont Public Radio's "My Place"--theme of show was orig versions of songs later made famous by other artists, such as this, but this version is great too!

  • I like this version, too. The other version is more atmospheric. This one's darker.

  • crank1 :D

  • What a voice! Rich and clear all the way down his range. I wonder why he isn't better known?

  • WONDERFUL

  • One of two of my favorite F. Neil songs, a timeless classic to say the least. The Dolphins is another great example of Neil's work. RIP Fred Neil.

  • One of the VERY few musicians I'm so sorry I never got to meet. And I was in Tampa so often, ironic.

  • Great song, and the Harry Nilsson cover is a treasure unto itself.

  • TEMA DE 1966

  • I see a resembelance between this song and a song in high school musical. I think it's called 'bet on it'

  • If the song didn't exist I think midnight cowboy would be nothing without it and for Nilsson to. One of the best songs ever.

  • @KarloR27 I don't know that film is pretty kickass, but this song really does add such a longing to it.

  • I'm new to youtube. This is so cool. I like this version of the song. He is so talented. I'm going to investigate him further. Thanks for sharing.

  • What a great singer/songwriter he's very missed

  • Thanks ~cjthemusicman~ for opening my eyes to this major classic..and, I thought Nilsson was the first...I love that I am still learning..how cool is that..thank you so much 45rpmSingles...for sharing the love and thank you YouTube for the moment..

  • Cheers JBJ !

  • @MRJUKEBOXJOHN Freddy wrote it. I loved him from 1961 on........to his death..in Florida.

  • *****

  • Damn good song writer.

  • Damned good singer, too.

  • This is a song about mental illness. Fred Neal wrote it and performed it. He was from Florida and spent time in NY City traveling the folk circuit. He returned to Florida eventually. His tune "Everybody's Talking" was basically the premise of the movie "Midnight Cowboy". This is a tune about Fred's life. There is a CD available of Fred's work with a foreward by David Crosby of CSN&Y that is worth a listen. Fred Neal was a complicated but brilliant man.

  • Mental illness??? Fred wrote this about being in New York with music biz guys telling him all the stuff they wanted him to do so they could make him a star and him thinking he'd rather be back home in Coconut Grove.

  • Thank you, Peter. I don't see any connection between that song and so-called mental illness. Fred wrote a lot of tunes about his life.

  • whew... that's a nice little jam right there. i've always loved nilsson's version and i've been looking for the original off and on, here and there for a while. never thought to check youtube...

    thanks for posting this.

beautifully raw and well done song. i need to pick up this record.

  • It's on an LP ST-2665 issued by Capitol in the 60's, simply titled Fred Neil. Good luck.

  • fred neil´s sjunger everybody´s talking, de e inte så det blev....

  • Harry Nilsson also re-recorded "without you" originally by the Welsh band Badfinger. Needless to say the original is far, far ,far better than the heavily produced string inflected cover by Nilsson.

  • nilsson heard without you at a party and called his friend the next day and said what was that record i cant live ... the beatles?

  • @dolphin8b There's no need to bash the original, Nilsson does a fantastic cover.

  • best version in the whole effing world

  • As much as I like this version, I prefer Harry Nelson's version!

    GREAT SONG!

  • Great song - yes!

Nilsson - OK, but this is THE best version. More heart and soul.

  • Harry Nilsson*

  • Luna's version is the best

  • I feel for folks who haven't heard this version until now . . . not that there's anything wrong with Nilsson's, but this is the real thing. And as far as I'm concerned, if you listen to this closely, especially from about about 1:15 onward, you can hear where a lot of Jimmy Buffett's shtick came from. Buffett turned it into an industry, while Fred Neil until his death was one of the unknown, unheralded geniuses in American music.

  • While I respect the sublime craftsmanship and artistry of the vocally gifted Harry Nilsson, I sincerely adore this stripped-down original version by Fred Neil as the heartfelt one to beat! The lyrics are incredible, swirling with descriptive imagery that puts Neil in line with some of the finest singer-songwriter poets we have had in music over the years. The passion and conviction with his proud baritone is overwhelming and joyful. I think it still stands the test of time, relevant & beautiful.

  • I can't believe I've only just heard this version. Great voice, similar to Tim Buckley.

  • Tim Buckley & Steve Stills both ADORE Fred Neil, as well they should.

  • woooooooooooooooow

  • lol

  • wow! had no idea... this is great

  • I meant the one by Harry Nilsson, this one's of course the original, sry ^^

  • Wonderful! I find the voice of this version better, but the music of the original one...

  • MAGNIFICENT!!!

  • Thank you for uploading this!! Great song

  • fred neil is the best!!!!! Where are you Fred Neil??????? So many good memories

  • This, the original, is not only the best version but really delivers the lyrics in the best setting.

  • @leftyodoul that may because the song was not written for the movie but about Fred Neil himself. Midnight Cowboy uses the song perfectly however. Its almost as if the movie was made around this great song.
