  • When I saw him 1982 at the swing auditorium in San Berdoo he was quite heavy. While doing the guitar solo, he laid down on his back, and started sliding all over the stage. It had to be clever wire-work. They put on a really good show. Con-Funk-Shun was on the ticket as well.

  • Roger is doing it on the synthesizer and talkbox but he was killing that guitar. His sound - his musical mastery - his stage presence - his delivery - bam, bam, bam on point. When you hear these songs you can't help but move. Don't get me wrong I cant move like I used to, but I can stand in one spot and work it, especially when my man and Zapp are jamming.

  • Oh. My. GOD. I can't believe I was unaware of this band's existence until tonight. That was AMAZING.

  • @LynstHolin The guy on the remote Keyboard is married to Shirley Murdock...

  • hey he looks like morris day!!

  • will smith

  • love it, love it, love it. take me back to the days, no worrys, no earthquakes, n no petral hykes. mmmmm those were indeed the days. master indeed, "roger".

  • just a little education for ppl calling this a "vocoder," Zapp is actually using a device called a "talk box" (which is what the tube is.) it's quite different than, say, a software vocoder used to make songs like Imogen Heap's Hide and Seek. furthermore, both methods are completely different than forced auto-tuning, first popularly used in Cher's Believe and Daft Punk's One More Time, and now popularly used in a lot of pop songs (a la T-Pain, etc.) you can wiki any of these terms for more info.

  • @lamdash Roger did use a vocorder in a couple of his songs (sparringly). Not a software one though

  • If you listen to the lyrics of some of Roger's song you will find out that he was really a Prophet and was not asking for us to send a donation to get a prayer cloth. Listen to the song "I Can Make You Dance". "I know th world is in a real bad way". Look at the world now. How bout the song title "So Ruff, So Tuff". Talk about Tuff Times now. Roger was ahead of the times.

  • 8 people can´t hear!

    This shit is sick! :D

love the talkbox, vocoder thing! :D

  • roger is he like dead

  • .Are you a dead beat dad is the bigger question???

  • the music lives forever

  • this is AWESOME!!! Back in this time it took real skill to get what we call today the "autotune" effect lol.

  • Yeah ! Little Roger and the Human Body were the days of his outstanding Guitarship. . He played all over Ohio in a van and a trailer hitch for the instruments as a Kid.. He was a very friendly Guy ! Roger Rip !!! 1

  • Didn't know he could play the guitar like that!! True musician and crowd pleaser!

  • Wow this brings back memories!! Thanks for posting. I was a huge Roger/Zapp fan back in jr high and high school.

  • 0:49... can u guess who used the sample? lol

  • Don't know, nowadays every artist is sampling like crazy and can not come up with their own beat.

  • Dr. Dre - California Love feat. 2Pac

  • legendary...

  • Man miss his music. man. wish he was still alive3.

  • Say Thank You T-Pain & All You Other "altered voiced" pretenders. This is the "King Of The Vocoder".Miss U Roger!

  • yeap rodeger was and still is the best, people dont know how many hours of practice it took to have the control and clarity, i read it in a book on rodger and much more..

  • U seem to know about zapp,,, there this mix that some one made on here SEARCH THIS....... MIXED DISCO MEDLEY FUNK 80 #7 ....and a part of ZAPP comes out at 6:00 can you please tell me whats the title. thanks so much,,,

  • its Zapp 4 only about 20-25 seconds, the song is called, I HEARD IT THROUGH THE GRAPEVINE

  • @funnkman dude its talkbox, you see that tube he put in his mouth? that shit fucks up your gums, heart rate, etc....and everybody gets electrocuted every once in awhile cause of the spit. still, i fuckin love the talkbox, and roger playin with his teeth - fuck, that was an awesome video! thanks for postin it, talkboxier - what year is this? i'd guess mid-late 80s

  • @funnkman he doesnt use a friggen vocoder...he uses a talkbox...

  • @funnkman amen!!

  • @funnkman

    I second that statement.

  • @funnkman I agree.

  • @funnkman AMEN.

  • @funnkman every time Zappp featuring the worlds greatest entertainer came to DC I was front row.

  • @funnkman Amen!

  • @funnkman why you hating? music is music. let artists express themselves however they like. furthermore, auto-tuning, vocoding, and talk boxing are all completely different methods of achieving altered voices. you shouldn't really compare them to each other. it's like comparing apples and oranges, they're completely different.

but yes, Zapp & Roger were the shit.

  • @funnkman no disrespect but Roger played the talkbox. The vocoder requires no skill @ all. He was the first 2 use the talkbox with a keyboard while others used a guitar

  • Comment removed

  • @funnkman this aint no damn vocoder man... its a talkbox get your shit right man

& fuck t-pain & his wack ass bull shit plastic music

  • the way it works is the sounds from the keyboard travel through that tube into you mouth allowing you to manipulate it by altering the shape of your mouth

  • no ,its called a talkbox. you can make your own for real cheap.just google "ghetto talkbox" or u can buy one. theyr called " banshees " like 100-200$ .. fuck t-pain that talentless fool uses "autotune" where it keeps u in key. no help from your own fingers on the keys actually playing the note u want your voice in. vocoder is different, you have to use yr voice for it to work. talkbox's send the audio thru the tube in yr mouth, the microphone picks up the sound comin out yr mouth. GREAT STUFF

  • this is real Old school Funk ..live too!

  • comment ça déchire trop sa race en live...!!!!!!

    Haaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrgggggg......!!!!!!!!! je meurt....!!!!!

  • fuck yes. I'm sick of these shitheads doing "close to you" after watching stevie w. on youtube. bow down to zapp bitches Roger T. RIP

  • Thatz weird how they use that straw or whatever :P

  • hehe yeah, its called a talk box, alters your voice in some way with a synthesizer, not exactly sure how it works, but people like t-pain today dont actually use the traditional talkbox :( the use a crummy program called autotune and its no substitute, talk box is the best! roger is the best!

  • i think its called a vocoder..i think!

  • Yabba Dabba Doozy Baabaa

  • T-Pain stole this lol :P

  • Arent auto tunes different than voice box tho?..

  • Yes... Way different... Cant use autotune on stage live... T-Pain sounds not so good on stage... Zapp & Roger were off da chain

  • funking funk!!!!!

  • REAL FUNK..... LOOOOOOOLLL

  • goood time!!!

  • this is funky,, donky

  • this the best music ever. You had to grow up with it . All of the old music is mixed in with much the new today. We just bought sample local music to suppour our peeps and one of the rap songs had the theme from Tour of Duty from the 80s, which is actually a Vietnam hero song.

  • oh man i luv this song

  • Wow, I like this better than the studio recording I heard. I don't care for much rap but I really like funk and funk rock (stuff like that). Great song.

  • the guitar solo was sick

  • Today's music sucks. Roger was some of the last of the real deal. Today's "musicians" can't create, so they sample. Roger and Zapp was the best. I still blast their music in my car.

  • i believe that was Shirley Murdock's husband that had that keytair solo, was it???...

  • YES, Dale Degroat a very talented keyboard player in his own right.

  • Its NOT a vocoder f, It's a TALKBOX big difference

  • VOCODER~! wow that thing is off the chainz...and thatz why all thez poohbuttz use it in todays garbage.

i always liked the ending of this song that goes,

"oooo you blow my mind.. mind mind...yeah"
