  • I like how he just discovers sounds that he likes, you can see he is really learning from it.

  • One thing I never see PG addressing is the fact of his freakishly long pinky finger. Mine (and perhaps most others) is perhaps one half that length. It's like a chick born to have big tits: an unfair advantage but something she rarely acknowledges as part of her attraction. Just my 2 cents...

  • Bach is not classical, it is baroque

  • @aaqaaqaaqaaqaaqaaqaa The term "Classical music" also generally refers to Western music from roughly the 1600s-1800s

  • @aaqaaqaaqaaqaaqaaqaa Baroque is classical you nimrod.

  • @MadLip78 Baroque music is from the years 1600-1750. Classical music is from years 1750-1830. There are differences in the music played as well as different instruments. You sir are the nimrod.

  • @aaqaaqaaqaaqaaqaaqaa People use the term "classical music" broadly (western music in general) as well as specifically (referring to the Classical period). Paul was using it in a broad term. I hate retards like you.

  • What the fuck are tou saying, Paul?

    Bach is BAROQUE, not classical!

  • Comment removed

  • @dmh091 I didn't act, I just said that Bach is baroque.

You can take everything else you supposed and put it in your ass.

    Have a good day.

  • @sorcavallaro

Hey, no hard feelings. Sorry about that, was having a bad day.

  • @dmh091 OK, avoid putting anything in your ass.

P.S. I'm a lutenist, and so I care a lot about difference between early and classical music.

  • @sorcavallaro

Obviously it's Baroque but most people classify Baroque, classical and Romantic music as simply "Classical." But you already knew that, you were just trying to be a smart ass. Have a good day.

  • "Now, let me play that slowly." Still twice as fast as I can play it. :P

  • now you know where Paul got his rock... from his parents!

  • I kinda want his shirt lol

  • that is a terrible shirt

  • holy shit i can finally play it. thanks paul

  • Paul...stop talking and keep playing. How can you not know the name of the piece you are playing? Just play and let us enjoy it.

  • @knastera lol

  • @knastera It wouldn't be much of a guitar lesson if he didn't explain anything :p

  • is this guy as cool in person?

  • @Ic9us Bit late, but yes, Paul is just as cool in person. Met him after his show in London last year, and he was a perfect gentleman. He's also huge, standing at about 6'5".

  • "Voting is for old people!" (Y)

  • That shirt it´s just awesome!!!

  • He doesnt use a G string!! :O

  • His guitar sounds amazing.

  • I play cello! Had a cellofest with Walter grey and Susan sturman, tidi janseen...

Grey played Bach... It was awesome..

  • Paul makes a joke about tuning.

    People dont get it.

    People are idiots.

  • One of the hardest parts of this is just playing with the strap that low lol

  • Wow three dislikes.....

    FAIL!

    (You three have no lives!)

  • voting is for old people

  • @AbelmetaL2112 random comments are for gay people

  • @ottozing look at his t-shirt -_-

  • @ottozing read his tshirt -_-

  • @AbelmetaL2112 wow soz. now i get it

  • i love gilbert, but i can't stand listening to classical music converted to electric rock music. for me it just seems like a way to show off, it's cool, but not something i would put on my mp3

  • @amanuelamanuel- I usually feel the same way, especially when it's metal players who shred and then say "Oh yah, I listen to lots of classical music, you know, I'm cultured" But if you think about it, Paul would have been a concert pianist, maybe virtuoso, had he been born two centuries earlier. And his tone in this video is like a guitar approximation of what a harpsichord sounds like. I don't know how I feel about it. I like this, but some "neoclassical" is pretentious shit.

  • @superlou1s i dont mind it but it's just something i can't image choosing over studio-made song

  • wonder why he got so big on single coils all of a sudden :o interesting

  • Is that an ebony fretboard?

  • @alt9001 Rosewood, i believe.

  • @alt9001 rosewood :)

  • he's like scheldon cooper of the guitar world :D

  • @samguitarmurphy When I started watching the series, I noticed sheldon was a clone of Paul Gilbert xD

    Even the voice!

  • god...i love this guy

  • droped d is now called "paul gilbert's secret tuning"

  • @SebaChannel ur DAMN right it is haha

  • @SebaChannel hahahahahahaha, but i supposed that in your first year like guitarist you have never knew this.

  • @GeorgeSaag i am from chile, so understanding every video or tab or anything in english was very difficult for me, so i never knew about tunings and techniques in a long time, i just learnt how to do hammer ons but i didnt know how they were called

you should give me a trophy or something lol

  • The more i see Paul Gilbert the more I love him

  • I would love to hear Paul play Bach's Cello prelude No1

  • paul plays in standard tuning or one of his crazy tunings 100% of the time.

  • that pinky of his is as long as my middle finger. FUCK. I have no chance

  • hahaha secret tuning

  • so...........hes in drop d?

  • @virusdetection jeez...yes.

  • "it'll be BEAUTTTIFUL" .. :DDDD ^_____^

  • Paul's the only person on the planet who is able to convince Ibanez to put an ebony fretboard on a guitar.

  • @bedofrazorsqwerty Its rosewood bud.

  • Don't hate the player, hate the game.

  • Cool!

  • SHELDON!! COOPER!

  • @Mickelito7 OH MY GOD!

  • @Mickelito7 yeah you're right xD

  • It's true, voting IS for old people.

  • Best T-shirt Ever

  • don't like it! for others complaining, i play it on the saxophone, sounds a lot better!!!

  • I didn't know that drop D was Paul's own personal secret tuning

  • @13tynman hey men!

    Anyone could get this tuning

you can tune that string in D and if you have a guitar with floyd rose you can use the Eddie Van Halen's D - Tuna

It's so easy, but its no a secret

    I always use that tuning

  • @mrbig0203 He was being sacastic

  • @nowinterweather jejejejej

    I knew ti!

    don't worry :P

  • @mrbig0203 r u stupid duh

  • Dude! his shirt is awesome.

  • I sense a bit of Eudaimonia Overture here, yes

  • lol at his shirt "voting is for old people." you never cease to amaze me Mr. Gilbert

  • 1:57 sneaky right hand :)

  • voting is for old people.

  • his secret tuning? doesnt he mean drop D lol

  • @jessbpowers congrats! You got the humor in his joke!

  • Paul's had some wierd guitars over the years but I really like the look of this one.

  • 'VOTINGG Is for OLD PEOPLE'

    hahha

  • he's the ultimate lead guitarist.. nobody can beat him absolutely!!

  • Someone should really tell Paul that Drop D is NO secret.

  • sweet secret tuning ;)

  • VOTING IS FOR OLD PEOPLE (pauls gettin old =/ )

  • This isn't on Drop D

    It's Eb (i think..)

  • @5im069MeTaL5ix he said it was drop D and when he played all the strings open you could hear it!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Sorry xDD

  • that's not a hand, it's a rake!

  • so this is where he got his eudaimonia overture ending?

  • I like his shirt

  • Who cares

  • All of you guys arguing over a Paul Gilbert video lesson fail bigtime.

    1. You aren't as good as he is.

    2. You are arguing over the internet.

    Fail.

  • @Fretfeeler Yeah voting is for old people!!!

  • @Fretfeeler comment WIN

  • thats not a secret tuning at all, its simply drop D lol

  • wtf???

    MY secret tuning???

that's how Criss Oliva used to tune his guitar

  • @RojizoMaster And you did not know that paul was kidding, this is just the Drop D tuning.

    DADGBe

  • @RojizoMaster Criss who?

    Does it matter?

This tuning has been used for decades... paul doesnt get any credit for it, jeez.

Do you play guitar? if u do, and u dont know how popular this tuning has always been, then u must be a sucky guitarplayer.

  • are you judging my playing by my knowledge about a tuning???

I could do the same thing... you don't know who criss oliva was

  • Paul usually plays down a full step. I said usually! I know he is not in this video.

  • are you kidding me? paul plays in standard tuning probably 98% of the time.

  • it depends, we playing with racer X, he started tuning to D for the last 2 qalbums, because of the singers vocal range.

  • @bingeandgrab92 Hmm, probably refered to the old "Racer X" Gilbert. They usually played with guitars tuned a half note down

  • @bingeandgrab92 True,so does Vai and Satriani

  • @bingeandgrab92 Agreed, however his song 'Viking Kong' is in drop C

  • @Ilya093 Actually Viking Kong was recorded with the whole guitar tuned down a whole step, so the sixth string would be tuned to D. And he plays it in standard live.

  • no he doesn't.

  • He had that on his website at one time.

  • No that was never on his website. ask any of us at the racer x board.

  • YES HE DID! It was on the section where he answered questions.

  • well judging by the thumbs up and thumbs down we've gotten, i think you can see who is right. i have actually met and played with the man. i think i know what i'm talking about.

  • making shit up does not help!

  • please stop dude. i'll actually be playing with him again on the 17th for a vip lesson in anaheim, no need for me to make stuff up. and fyi im one of the best string skippers on youtube, i think i know i a thing or two about it.

  • I saw your playing. You are not that great dude. There are a lot better players than you. I doubt you know Paul, but if you do meet him ask him if that was on his website. It is always nice when someone brags how good they are.

  • ya im gonna spend my short time with paul asking about shit he used to have on his website that he wont remember. quite frankly i dont care what was on his website. the fact is he is in standard tuning the majority of the time. i'll be sure to confirm it with him.

  • btw, really cool for you to say how good you are. Almost all people that do that suck!

  • Im not a great string skipper so dont get all butt hurt over some constructive criticism but you don't even play scarified perfectly, there are much better players, and you have NO evidence to support your claim, you need to back up your words before you post them. You have 8 uploads. Playing scarified is a great show of technique sure, but you do mess up. Post a video dedicated to string skipping, and blow everyone out of the water that i've seen in the last 18 years and i'll believe it.

  • WRONG. Like the other guy said, he's in standard pretty much all the time.

  • nope, guess again.

  • My Telecaster has the same color body and pickguard

  • thats a iceman, with tele setup i guess

  • Its a fireman. Also it is nothing like a tele at all, or is that not what you meant?

  • Haha, his "secret tuning". I think my second guitar is the secret tuning right now.

  • its drop D lol

  • check out Glen Gould's recording of this March 17 , 1965 . He plays it seriously fast !

  • i love how his single coils have chunk and have a thick sound to them

  • Thats called drop D paul. :)

  • He has amazingly long fingers.

  • guitarist's fingers lol

  • edgarrg94 is pretty much correct. paul could actually sight read a score, but isn't as adept as his wife emi(she is a classically trained pianist by the way). hence the need for him to ask emi for help.

GD4LBeast you're a fucking twit, learn how to spell "sense" before talking shit to others

  • nice shirt

  • Nononononono of course jaja, he know read music but he doesn't know good he reading sucks, he say it in one interview that he need emy (his wife) help or that emy read better but paul doesn't know very good how to read

  • If you can read music, then you can sight read, how well you sight read is dependent on how comfortable you are reading music.

  • his secret tuning? lol hes so funny :) i love PG

  • AWESOMEEE im gonna learn this.

  • Paul always has an interesting t-shirt on hehe. I like the one in this video :)

  • Hey, does anyone know if Paul can read music well? I remeber hearing him say he learnt these by ear, so I wonder..... I think hes self taught, so I assume he can't sight read, like 99% of all guitar player, but if you know for sure please tell me!

  • hes not self tought he went to the Musicians institute

  • I'm aware of that, but by the time most musicians go to collage they can already play most of the things they will ever be able to. he must have been playing, what, 6 years or so before he went there? If so, did he have a teacher then?

  • he surely had a teacher he's mentioned that in many interviews

  • i must say though...his theory is ever growing...simply awesome

  • @nomis69 yeah, but for just one year.

he IS self-taught, he has been playing ever since he was a little kid...

  • @nomis69 He only went to MI for a year. He'd mostly self-taught himself a fair amount before that, and even more afterwards of course. He also can't read music, which is what the original question was.

  • @nomis69 He IS self taught and he TAUGHT at musicians institute.

  • @johnaiton mi.edu/news/paul-gilbert-returns-to-mi-to-teach-private-lessons - He both attended and taught at MIT.

  • @nomis69 for the most part he is self taught, yes musician's institute helped but he was proficient in music knowledge and technique already. when i played with him back in January he discussed how he is able to read music but is not exactly a fan of it. In other words, he can if he needs to but is not the fastest sight reader.

  • @nomis69 where is that

  • I doubt he is sight reading illiterate and I also doubt his reading is as excellent as his playing

  • He can read music for sure. He went to GIT, which is a school for guitarists.

  • i went to a clinic and he said he can't read music well and he does not sight read. he can read chord charts well though. he made a packet for us to study at the clinic and he said he was quite proud of the lick that wrote in standard notation. it was not too complicated

  • he can read music, i don't know about sight reading though.

  • @ibanezbloke

the dude went to MI in hollywood.. one of the best guitar schools to go to if u wanna become famous/wanna do it for a living.. he even taught there.

  • @AngryLlamaz I know he went to MI, but that doesn't mean he can read well. I know people who go to jazz college and most of the teachers there, despite being amazing musicians, have pretty rudimentary reading technique

  • @ibanezbloke Yes... he just doesn't read tab well. I had a lesson with him, and everything was in standard musical notation. When tab was in front of him, he paused a bit ;) He picked on himself.

    What a fantastic musician!!

  • @ibanezbloke i heard from a youtube VDO, somewhere i forgot, but i remember he said "I don't read music, actually i really wanted to"

  • @ibanezbloke He did go to GIT but he's not much of a reader now. i met him when I was there and he told the room that he can't really read music anymore because he doesn't practice it...his ears are sick though

  • @ibanezbloke He has almost perfect pitch. So he can hear something and know what the notes are.

  • @GuillermoSmyser SO he has relative pitch then, like pretty much all musicians.

I'm not trying to belittle his playing, I'm just wondering if someone hired him for a session and put a lead sheet in front of him would he know what to do with it. From the resposes I've gotten, I conclude that he could, but it would probably take some time to work out.

  • @GuillermoSmyser There's no such thing as "almost perfect pitch". You either have perfect pitch or you don't.

  • @themightytad Sure there is. Well, the sense I'm talking about is some people just know very quickly and others can still do it but it takes a little longer to figure out which note it is.

  • @themightytad

Maybe they mean they are good at telling relative pitch?

E.g. I couldn't tell you what a note played out of nowhere was, but if you gave me a named note and then played another one without naming I could 9/10 times tell how far apart they were and name it.
