I practiced hapkido from the age of 5-16. I received my first black belt at 11, my second degree at 14, and at 15 i became a part time instructor. I'm 18 now and due to multiple reasons i unfortunately don't have the time to train anymore.
Trust me when I say this shit works. I have several first hand experiences of it working in a street fight.
Im hoping to get into MMA once I get settled in college, and I have no doubt that Hapkido will help me more than most other self-defense martial arts.
@NahaShuriTomari well obvious I didnt learn adult techniques for the first black belt, but I did for my second degree. And and Im jumping on the MMA bandwagon because I dont have to time to actually train in an art, Im just looking for a full contact sport to keep in shape and release some stress.
I find your arrogant tone offensive. I hope you don't train in any martial arts, because just from that reply you seem to lack respect for others. Which is normally linked to a lack of discipline
@attila518 Although, it will definitely prepare you to assimilate into other arts, both for sport and real life application. I disagree that it will help you more than Jiu Jitsu in MMA because most techniques in Hapkido are not allowed in MMA. MMA does not allow small joint manipulation grappling. It allows big joint manipulation grappling such as those you learn in Jiu Jitsu. Meaning most finger, wrist locks, applying pressure points, that you've been learning to master are prohibited in MMA.

My personal oppinion: 50% will not work in a real fight. Its based on full contact sparring, Eskrima weapons training and sparring an a few bar brawls...
@ethiery ok, if you think so... I've never seen an arm stretcht out long enough to catch it and I've never seen high kicks in a bar. But: I know one can make it work in an street fight if he trainined long and hard, some like Alain Burrese combine it with boxing and it wokrs for them. I understand that this Vid is a demo vid: You always show the fancy stuff in such vids, not the good stuff. And: I wrote 50%. The other 50% might work... the 50% not working IMHO might be the fancy show stuff.
having done both, id say its like comparing apples and oranges. Each has its strengths and weaknesses. I love each for what they are, and know that having done both im a better and more rounded martial artist than if i had only done one.
hwarangdo is better then bjj. Hwarangdo is a mix of aikido, hapkido, judo, bjj, tkd, and also teaches how to fight with multiple weapons, etc. Its another korean martial art. An ancient korean martial art.
Yes, that is correct, except it's not exactly the same. It has many manipulations and alternatives that comes similar to judo, bjj, aikido, and tkd. Don't forget they also teach multiple weapons too. It is also used in many military and army. I also heard BJJ was used in many military too.
OK, aikido is a one directional thing... basically if they resist the counter moves are outa the question. Aikido is softer and similar in ways BUT NOT hapkido. Modern hapkido? That's combat hapkido (est. 1992). Hapkido has been around for over 1500 years... Judo yes! I'm sure there is a trow here and there.. BJJ... no... not at all. Go watch more videos...
nope, it's the other way around, Hapkido is more comprehensive and complete then BJJ. BJJ is the best evolution for the ground, but overall Hapkido is closer to a well rounded approach that encompasses the original philosophy. The original is one of the best martial systems in the world for CQC. Don't get me wrong BJJ is the best evolution for the ground, but lacks heavily in the real understanding and application of aikijujitsu
@Mocktezuma111 I thoroughly disagree. I have been practicing Hapkido for nearly 3 years, and it has been the best experience in the Martial arts i have ever had. I have practiced Judo and MMA, and none of them has prepared me for both sport and self-defense quite like Hapkido. People don't seem to realize that Hapkido is a well-rounded art with a very strong grappling base.
Strange attitude, I would have been like yay! But hey everyone is different and i'm happy, I didn't realize this is what they teach y'all. Be safe guys, God bless
I love hap ki do, i started 3 months ago and it was one of my best decisions, right now im working on sky falling but it all takes alot of time to build the foundation.
Hapkido mostly teaches pressure points and shit. basically, you grab someone in a way that they either move how you want them to or they have no functional bones. very very scary stuff.
ok, these guys are pretty good, but if all you did was spend your time at some dojo training day and night like these guys probably do, you would be as good as them in a couple of years too.
As a past practitioner and black belt of Hap ki Do, I can honestly say that this is truly a dynamic and fluid....yet very powerful style of Korean martial Arts.
Many of the Kicks are very powerful and share lineage with Tae Kwon Do. Self defense in Hap ki Do is probobly the most distinctive feature however...as Hap ki Do (like Judo or Aikido) uses the opponents own strength against them, requiring little brute force.
I still try and practice the kicks and techniques in my spare time.
hmm Hap Ki Do is one of the most effective martial arts from Korea cuz it contains all u need for a long range battle and a close battle... and yo its not similar to Aikido and Dustin Taekwon Do as we know it today is just kinda sport and not a real martial art like it was years ago.... Hap Ki Do attacks the weakness of a opponent and uses all it needs to take him down... so some techniques prolly look similar to other martial arts but the Hap Ki Do way is unique and its very effective...
Haha whatever you say man...tae kwan do as we know it today was founded in the 50's not gonna lie...but haha im not gonna argue...and i said hapkido is similar to aikido..and it is very very simliar to tae kwan do...but thats my two cents. take it or leave it.
Im sure if hapkido is older than taekwando. I cant remember the exact dates but i think TAE KWAN DO was founded in the 50s and Hapkido early 60's. Takkyeon is an art similar to tae kwan do and has been around for a logn time but the art of tae kwan do was founded in the 50s Hapkido is very similar to aikido and when choi came to korea his students added things like kicking and other korean techniques to it which made it the hapkido today.
sorry mate but you are wrong.... TAE KOWN DO.. it about 2500 BC and it wasn't call tae kown do in those days......... it was practiced in festivities in corea; TAEKOWNDO name was given recently......HAP KI DO....... was created out of JUI JITSU japanes.... adding some kicking but they are related but no similar.
Anyone practicing Hap Ki Do, what is the emphasis of HKD? Joint-locks, kicks, punches, throws, submissions or any combo of the above? By the look of the vid, their jointlocks.
I don't practise it myself, but from what I've heard, it teaches all of the above. As far as I know Hapkido is a very versatile art that doesn't limit itself to any one technique or method of fighting.
@Wright805: Indeed. About Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do:
"The system works on the use of different 'tools' for different situations. These situations are broken down into ranges (Kicking, Punching, Trapping, & Grappling), with techniques flowing smoothly between them. Also, it is referred to as a "style without style". Unlike more traditional martial arts, Jeet Kune Do is not fixed or patterned, and is a philosophy with guiding thoughts."
Grandmaster Duk Soo Kim 9th Dan, KHF is seen from 5:42 until 6:01 (the one always coming from the left, & neutralising the attack). How do I know? I train with him at Hindmarsh, South Australia.

phleb1968 1 year ago
@shadetyped There are five ranges of combat ; Kicking range, Punching range, Trapping range, Body to body standing and body to body on the ground.
BJJ does NOT cover anything beyond body to body range. That is a good part of the reason it is inferior.
The BJJ dogma also states that the vast majority of fights end up on the ground. This is also false.
BJJ has its place. It is a good martial art. It is not however a combat effective style that you can utilize on the street vs multiple opponents
