I have commented before about the appraisals on this show. How can this be worth less than some pos painting that means nothing? This is a historical item.
@caddop22 Well a lot of it depends on the auctioneer too. These are usually USUALLY about 50% their actual price, due to the way auction prices work, so a lot of it eventually comes down to what an experienced auctioneer thinks you can get in the current climate.
True that it sounds too little for it, those estimations are only estimations not the value it could potentially reach on auction. If you get two rich bidders wanting this sword, you'll never now.
lol ONLY 200k? I would price this at 800k+ at LEAST. The simple fact that its made of Gold already makes its value shoot up, but since its also 1 of 5 in the Entire World and the ONLY sword to like that, should make its value go up even more. I sure hope he didnt end up selling that thing for near 200k.
he was sitting on on a national treasure .. 200 k .. spare me .. a private collector .. a presidents honor .. one of 5 cmon .. thats easily priceless .. the gold becomes cheap after those facts .
There are $200,000 reasons I can think of plus the fact that the sword does not disappear because it's sold. A new owner will take pleasure in owning it. It's now someone else's treasure. It's a wonderful thing when you think about it. Someone becomes wealthy and someone else gets an incredible treasure. What could be wrong with that? Besides, with the price of gold going up over the past few years.. This will be worth more than $200,000 in it's gold content alone.
While the weapon may be attractive, it would be close to useless in modern warfare. So I don't see them being produced on a wide scale in the near future.
I would have to find the other 5 sword owners confront them in a dark alleyway and let them know there can be only one. Hope it holds a good edge, decapitation is not as easy as it sounds.
I think if you have a solid gold sword that has engraved on it "presented by the President of the United States of America," you're gonna expect it to be worth a fair sum.
@DetectiveOlivaw - If you had a SOLID GOLD sword of that age and with that kind of craftsmanship, it wouldn't even matter if the engraving said, "Presented by Mary Suckwell, Village Prostitute."
they should give these out instead of medal of honors
123420727 2 months ago
@123420727 then it would mean as much because at least 10 medals of honor are given out each go around
SuperMikel101 2 months ago
@123420727 Hell of an incentive to earn a Medal of Honor! People would be killing each other for them - no pun intended.

I personally consider that a national treasure. $200,000? Pfffftt... No price can be placed on freedom.

undoubtedly if just because of the appreciation in the price of gold, this is worth much more.

Hey, who doesn't want a lump of gold?
Though in it's ornamental state, I'm sure you'd have gotten a little more for it.
Ultranothing 2 years ago 4
maybe I shouldn't have melted the other one down, then. I still have the blade though, and the case and the bag,
plus I got a big lump of gold.
I'll take $150,000 for it as it is now

if you melted it down for the gold, it would be worth 500,000, plus the topaz.

Not a chance of it! Gold isn't that valuable particularly not when you consider the historical value of the piece!!!
