Read the book. It's excellent. The Joel and Ethan did a fantastic job adapting it. But the novel obviously has more sustenance not to mention extras that don't feature in the film.
When he checks his shoes, it's for the blood of his victims. So he did Carla Jean. Which was fucked up, really. She was totally innocent. But in Anton's fucked up logic, he had to follow through with the bargain he made with Llewellen.
@Clay4legacy In the movie, he seems to try to avoid getting blood on his shoes when he kills people. And when he doesn't kill someone, he doesn't check his shoes. I think that's the clue as to the fact that he killed Carla Jean.
