I don't think Fred's work here was better.

If I look at Michael's Smooth Criminal I can see that he totally made his own moves for the video. He isn't just a copy machine. He is also a pioneer, an inventer. But YEAH! Of course, his inspiration came from Fred Astaire. He admits that Fred Astaire is one of his biggest influences. Like what MJ says: "The greatest education in the world is watching the masters at work."

Yes, Michael Kidd choreographer extraordinaire. He can be seen dancing personally with Gene Kelly and Dan Dailey in MGM's IT'S ALWAYS FAIR WEATHER (1955).
