There are two Battler's. There's the Battler on the chessboard and the Battler of the Meta-world. The Battler of the chessboard is not directly controlled by Battler but walks through the plot of each episode on Rokkenjima, experiencing each and every event on the island in every episode, and if he dies in one episode he can come back in another since those are different possibilities. Then there's Meta-Battler, who is the one who is in the Mystery versus Fantasy debate with Beato.

Oh God, Kinzo's and Battler's "devouring" scenes made me shit bricks. They were actually pretty eerie for even someone like me who can get past horror games with barely any problems. And then Rosa comes in being the most awesome mom ever. Ep2's Rosa is basically the only Rosa that ever achieved redemption in any of the games so far because she accepted Maria as something she actually loved, which you only realize till later, but it makes the scene ever more epic.
