OMG! This is the best step-by-step instructional video on Youtube. It gives detailed instructions, finally a useful video. Thanks. Also, there is nothing wrong with cutting a hose. Clamps are included in the kit to reseal it. And, a heater hose is no more than $5 at the auto [arts store. You could easily replace the hose before refilling the radiator.
Is there a cheapo way to clean out the rust and sludge deposits safely? Like adding Ajax or some other household degreaser without compromising hoses and seals and internal workings? Thanks, i love you.
A lot of newer cars are a pain to do yourself and expensive to have the shop do. I just use a hand pump siphon to remove about a gallon and replace with fresh stuff. Be sure to watch the level, since quite a bit will drain back into the radiator when you drive the first time. It is not as good as a full flush but it keeps the fluid fresh until I have the dealer do it right.
@fixinggrace dude are you HANDICAP so you cant do it yourself ? its not only about $50 once i made mistake and took my 1999 Ford Mustang to a Ford dealer in Pittsburgh "KennyRoss" to change my antifreez and i paid $ 90.00 and the worst thing is that they didnt even change it ! they just cleaned the Coolant Cap with a towel and radiator cap ! BEFORE CHANGE i went there i MIXED red and green antifreeze AND THATS HOW I KNEW THEY DIDNT CHANGE IT ! so i got my $90.00 and they changed again!
@Vucijak86 "dude" I have no desire to get into a pissing match with you, but your comment was uncalled for. I've been working on cars for 25 years and taking a car into the dealership for routine maintenance is never a great idea. A local mechanic is much better, and they'll make the situation right more often than the dealer ever will. The shop I go to charges me $50 to flush the rad and recycle the coolant.
Antifreeze and automobiles have changed since this video was produced. Now it is recommended to buy unmixed and premix it yourself prior to pouring into the cooling system because it will never achieve a proper 50/50 mixture inside the engine alone. Or spend the extra cash for premix, which by the way folks is just a half junk of antifreeze with a half jug of distilled water. Yikes! paying $13 or more for 2Liters of water and 2L of antifreeze? no thanks, the unmixed is the same price.
Also any body knows how can I flush the chevrolet blazer 1999 radiator? I could not find the screw or the thing under the radiator for emptying the water, i just can not reach to that it is so tight too many things around it, what's the easiest way, I realy appreciate ur help.
Hi, I have a chevy blazer and have a problem with radiator, I always fill up th radiator with water before I start the car but i find it almost empty again next time I want to use the car,i am sure there is no leaking peroblem, but the radiator is so dirty seems like there is something like mud or rust inside, also the heater does not work properly if I forget to will the radiator before use the car but when I fill it up works fine again, could anybody help me with this problem? thanks
If you're sure it's not leaking outside of the car, it must be leaking inside the engine. You probably have a bad head gasket, a cracked head, or a cracked block.
my car gets really hot when driven for more than an hour and water bubbles out of the expansion tank. Does this sound like my radiator needs a flush? The car is new to me but is 20 years old it has been looked after but the only problem is this overheating problem i would really like to fix it but don't want to do any damage so if you have any tips i would be happy to hear from you
I would consider replacing the radiator. In some cars the cost to replace is very low and can be considered good insurance. Engine cost a lot more to fix. My Isuzu was less then $100 to replace. My Chevy however was $400.00 It cracked so i had to replace that. The Isuzu was just running as little warmer but it was old so i just replaced it to be safe.
You could have one of several problems. #1 Thermostat......You can check this by running the engine with the radiator cap off, coolant could be lost while the engine reaches temperature so be ready to refill any that may run out in the first 3-5 minutes. If while doing this coolant shoots to the sky.....you have blown a head gasket and can now stop. When it reaches temperature you should see flow past the cap opening which tells you the therm. is open. If not replace it.
#2 Your car should have a belt driven fan.The fan has a clutch which allows it not to fully engage...at times. If this is able to spin freely by hand...with the engine OFF of course....it is faulty. If you can stop it with a few folds of cardboard while running....it is faulty...this is not reccomended for novice mech.. #3 Radiator....which you guys have covered well. Tip:Water in a cooling system can cause corrosion build-up.Always be sure
you betcha.

take an axe and hit the radiator in the middle. helps to drain faster. then tape it with scotch :)

Take into a shop and let them do it and dispose of the old coolant. It's only about $50.
