plz help. i still dont get this. I mean i love music. And i play music both for God and for myself. My question is : Is it wrong to play just for my own joy??
as a Christian and a musician i've always wondered about this very topic. Is Jesus the centre of my songwriting, or is it me? it's kind of hard sometimes to achieve the former when i'm writing what He has done in my life, but i always always write with Him in my mind, never me. However, i hope to God that every every Christian examine every every song they sing to the Lord to ensure that it is God-centered and is doctrinally accurate. I think that's very important as lyrics stick to our minds
Lets just take what he is saying about making music and apply it all the arts shall we? Or anything that brings pleasure for that matter. Betty likes to make wonderful birthday and wedding cakes. Betty loves the feeling she gets from creating them and people love to receive them. So now is Betty wrong to do this only for her own pleasure? Does Betty need to stop making cakes for others and her own glory and start only making cakes for the LORD? Zeal without knowledge is not good.
But you did see the first part, which was my initial response to your comment concerning doing all things for God's glory?
Seems like you're paying attention to that BUT I added the boasting thing because if I'm doing something for my own glory and I'm doing well, that gives me something to boast about. But that's just me.
There is a reason that the whole has distain for Christians. It's the way the act. It's the way the think they are all knowing and far above others. It is in their false humility. You who are so big on not boasting, you miss what others see so clearly in you. Your pride is in your demonstration of just how "non-boastful" you are. You have no idea how many you have turned away from Christ because your focus in not on anyone being saved.
But your focus is on you, on how holy you appear to be. If you witness its so you can have the glory of bragging about how many you saved. Thats the problem with the charismatic Pentecostals. They care more for their demonstration of outward appearance of godliness and fanaticism than they do about really obeying God. They hold their inaccurate handed down beliefs over the authority of the scriptures. They brag about how many they have saved. The question is how many have you pushed away?
I'm sorry but you don't know anything about me. I haven't said anything that would cause you to think that 1) by giving God glory in all things I'm referring to how many people I get saved or 2) that I'm in this lump of people you are talking about. I've said nothing about being pentecostal. I simply gave verses that I think show that we can do all things for God's glory. So what this shows me is this dialogue has to do more with your experience with other Christians that it has to do with me
I don't even think I'm that great at obeying those scriptures I shared, but it is my hope to grow. If that makes you think that I'm trying to be holier than thou...well that's not my concern. My only concern is please God not man. And thankfully, my mistakes don't separate me from God because of the work of Christ on the cross. And because of Him I can trust Him to work out issues in my heart and I can trust him to work out his love in the hearts of those you mention.
And you say I'm focusing on myself, and again, there's no room or context for such an assumption because you don't know me. But even still, what would it look like for the focus to be on God? I believe that is what my original post sought to explore. Sorry if it came off wrong. I just think scriptures speaks more clearly than anything I could say.
Thus says the Lord: Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the Lord.
there is no scripture that leads one to beleive that music should be held to any different standard then any other thing. Yes music should be used for GOds glory ,however so should everything else. I see no reason to point music out and teach this sermon only on music. Every skill ,talent,or accomplishment we make in anything ,music, sports, work, professionally or volunteerly ALL should be used for Gods glory. why put more pressure on music ?
Can I just thank you from the bottom of my heart for saying what you have? We need more people like you with common sense and true wisdom. If not for thinking good thinking we would never have had a reformation. It is people like the fellow in this video cause so many to go astray. Just look how many posts don't see that.
Amen! Worship is more than just a song! It is a lifestyle...we live to bring glory to our Savior! ...not ourselves! thanks Bob for serving the Lord and being a great example!
Worship means being in the presence of God.. so than you don't need to make any specific sound. Just be with Him. Love him and let him overwhelm you with His presence.
Yes. But in fact worship is not only being glad in His presence, but also showing to the worlds the joy He gives us, by wich we can die: "Jesus said that to peter indicating the kind of death by wich he would gloroify His name"

And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Colossians 3:17
So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all in the glory of God. 1 Corinthians 10:31
Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men. Colosiians 3:23
I believe Betty can make cakes for the glory of God, working unto him, glorifying him with her life and making her only boast in Him.

Jeremiah 9:23-24
So, let Betty not boast in her ability to make delicious cakes. Let he only boast be in the Lord.
What a challenge indeed!
