@zaainathefirefly : we are not only animals : it is not because a woman is dresses sexy that we have to jump on her. a man that cannot dominates himself is not a man, he is an animal.
This reminds you of Penda and Ramatoulaye, those two feisty women in Sembene Ousmane's God's Bits of Wood (Les Bouts de bois de Dieu)! It would be something to really cheer about if women's activism is still alive in Senegal. Which also reminds me of Moolade, Ousmane's last movie: maybe feminism never really died in Senegal after all. Nice take through music! At some point, hopefully, African music from different countries will be available across the continent, regardless of language.
It is interesting that the latest wave of feminism in the performing arts has sprung from predominantly Muslim parts of Africa, from Egypt to Senegal and Mauritania. Eccomic and social advancement is well-served by using the talents of everyt person regardless of gender. Just look at the difference between Afghanistan and Bangladesh. Perhaps the women creating this music understand that Islam was the first world religion to codify the legal rights of women. I like this trend in music.
Wow. I love the Senegalese and their culture anyway. But I really love this video. What's so special about it is that you don't even have to understand the language to understand what she's talking about....sexism for one. She carries herself like royalty and so should all women. She's tall, beautiful, well dressed, and singing well. I love this!
@olajinka "Wow!" was also my first thought when I first saw one of her videos. That the theme was strongly feminist was immediately apparent. This is a lady who knows what she is worth, and what women in general are worth to society. She lives up to the traditions of the griot as musician and lecturer. This seems to be a rising tide in music in Senegal, Guinea and Mali, perhaps even into Mauritania (Google Maalouma mint Meidah.) It has brought some interesting music to the world.
1. Wow! Me too, you not the only one that loves her. For me she's an artist angel with high level of musical and artistic pallet. Coumba is an African genius to be honest. Hope she realises that. Look, in terms of creativity, she's the female Yousssou N'dour. She is folk and infuses in such vibrant western form. I hope I got that right.
2. What a marvellous song she sings starting of obscurely before injecting some unbelievable creative manoeuvres. Listen, I'm a graduate fashion designer and a back vocal. I know what's good when I see it. Although designers are visual people but we also gain great inspiration from music. A whole collection could be inspired by it. Have you thought of Coumba looks similar to Carla Bruni of France, Sarkozy's wife?
@randriamandresy Given the level of sophistication you display, most people don't much care what you think, if you think at all. Are you by chance intimidated by strong women?
i love her so much. and i like the message because she is not playing it safe.. most tyms women are afraid to say what theyreally feel because they are afraid of the consequences.. tru her outfit is sexy n she does look seductive, but maybe thats just to say you can b that and be treated in the right way... like it or not we all indulge in some ways.. hmm the message might be clearer if she had worn something less sexy!
@khadijabaybe 3. Well I see it directly in this video, her cheekbone, stare, everything. My favourite part starts from 3.19mins when she really changed the palette with her sexy structure. Wow. Long live Coumba and it's a dream for me to meet her someday. She is a truly great lady, simple but elegant as ever. Wow!
Beau video, tres, tres, tres, tres beau video! Avec beaucoup de la chose que je voudrais voir dans les videos de youtube, et presque rien de que je ne voudrais voir pas du tout!
maybe but they are some women who don't take all those time to put makup like me n other women if u think that you are beautyful u don't need to put too many makup ,and womens who does that , want be seen or to be loved
I see your reasoning but that's not always the case. Sometimes some women just put on make-up because well...we're girly! It's a very girly...sometimes sensual thing to do. There's a transformational aspect to make-up that's just part of the fun of wearing it. Sometimes it has absolutely nothing to do with wanting to be seen/loved. There are girls that look better WITHOUT make-up; if they enjoy wearing it then your reasoning is void i'n it?
Unfortunately this message is lost on millions of women the world over who, like Coumba, turn themselves into sex objects spending billions on make up, hair treatments, clothes to emphasize their figure, cosmetic surgery (breast augmentation). Not to mention the hundreds of hours wasted applying the stuff and worrying how they look.
The ratio of men to women is part of the problem. Too much competition to get a husband. No problem for the man, who tries his best to marry four or five to help even out the situation. Do you know what men really want in a woman?
The root problem is the belief that a husband is a necessity. Instead of enabling the misogyny of these patriarchies, which keep women as unpaid housekeepers, sex toys and breeding stock, what women must focus on to progress individually and collectively is education (getting smart, instead of looking cute), leading to financial independence (from men), through entrepreneurship or better-paid employment. To achieve this childbirth must be delayed and limited (men kept at bay).
