I keep playing this over and over - it's more than superb! Cotton's earlier recordings seem to be overlooked on reissues, which is a shame given the sheer BRILLIANCE of this record. I especially love the temple blocks behind the vocal, which strike me as fairly distinctive; Cyril Grantham's vocal is excellent as well. I've searched everywhere for a copy of this, but I've heard that these Columbia "CB's" of Billy Cotton are quite hard to find.
Such a lovely tune! Since discovering it a few days ago, I have to say it's become one of my favorites! I'd love to try to find a copy of this - would you have the record's catalogue number?
I can't find the 78!As a result i have asked 85scampi,who has the Cotton listings,to look for you.He had an excellant band about this time, later turning to the same old big band style all bands had after 1940ish,and becoming a UK household name again later for his still remembered"Billy Cotton Band Show"in the 50s and 60s
I'd been familiar with his later mid-30's style, which isn't of nearly as much interest. Needless to say, these 1930-1931 recordings by his band are a revelation; this one especially is just incredible. Such a good sound! I'll have to keep my eye out for a copy of this record. For some reason this strikes me as being very much in the same vein as "Happy I Found You (Glad I'm In Love)," recorded for Edison Bell by the Radio Melody Boys in the same year and another favorite of mine.
I agree with the likeness in style to Radio Melody Boys. This band and Harry Hudson and others all had a big dance band sound by 1930.Jack Paynes 1929 and early 1930 records have a small 20s sound, but mid 1930 he enlarged and the sound of recordings around late 1930-31 are some of his best.
Obviously very well maintained. The rubber cushions in the needle holder inside the reproducer usually harden with age reducing the ability of the needle to track the higher frequencies. This one sounds fine.
AMAZING! A complete "take-over," as you say - I'm totally in agreement with Genia's comment. That 1930-1931 Billy Cotton sound is just devastatingly good, even more so in the case of this brilliant number!
Such praise, many thanks.85scampis is better as it has a later 1937 speaker i think, and Josefsterkens is excellant.Your little fidelity is excellant too!
A very nice tune and a beautiful radiogram (or radio-record player, as we unimaginative Americans called them). The sophisticated arrangement and singing style sound more like mid-30s than 1930.

Well all I can say is you have a gem.

A fine sounding Cyril Grantham on July 16th 1931.

You are a lucky man, he plays perfect, you have him for the rest of your life, undistructable machine. A bargain.
